  • In the US, there are now six states that offer people the option of ending their lives with a prescribed cocktail of drugs, as long as they are terminally ill, of sound mind, and strong enough to administer their own prescribed dose.
Louis heads to California, one of the latest states to adopt this law. He meets a group who provide information about how to die to those who don't necessarily fit the legal criteria.
With them, he meets a woman planning to end her life long before what would appear to be her natural time, raising complex moral, ethical and legal questions about how much control we should have over our own deaths.

I absolutely refuse to live through dementia and Alzheimers because my mind and my memories are my most prized possessions. In my religion, the soul cannot be reincarnated unless the heart is burned. After I'm done raising my kids and they are on their own they don't need me anymore, I know it may sound callous, but that's a fact. If they feel inclined to keep me around for their own emotional benefit then they are selfish pieces of shit and I will make sure they know that till the day the illness finally takes me and my mind is nothing but a shell of its former self. I think it's a nice way for people to end their lives that are of sound mind and choose to do it in a way we're family and friends can say goodbye and it's Pleasant versus blowing their brains all over a wall and it being dramatic and having the family have to deal with a much more traumatic ending. I've never heard a rational, non-religious argument against the right to die with dignity, as long as certain criteria are met. Why is it taking so long for this to become a standard practice in all civilised nations? It's uncomfortable for most of us to think about - I get it - but for some people it's a very real reality, and their wishes should be taken into account.

    • @AlaskaRS
      @AlaskaRS 3 года назад

Will open saying I'm entirely pro-euthanasia here. But I can see one argument coming into play that is separated from religion. In many instances, friends and family are left behind when a person kills themself and those who voice opposition likely fear a world where people off themselves early and leave behind broken family.
I think many who are against assisted dying fear that it will become a commonplace habit in people who are not terminally ill or in physical pain, but are just mentally suffering. Mental illness should undoubtedly be something included in criteria for this option as well, but I can understand if people are fearful that mentally ill people will skip step 1-2-3 of therapy and jump straight over to suicide.
The bottom line of the argument is that making access easier means people will be choosing death before they try other forms of help. I don't believe this should prevent it from becoming legalised and available as an option, just that it's important to tackle the arguments against assisted suicide's case. That way, we can see this practice implemented in such a fashion that people won't be going to court to have the legality revoked. That already happened in Australia once. Part of this means accounting for the question of mental illness and if it's fair for someone to leave behind a family through assisted dying. I hope that these answers can be solidified soon so that we can see less people dying traumatically.

It is really unfathomable for any of us until we are in it. The fact that this woman wants to end her life while she still dignity is a valiant choice. She is brave as hell and has every right to make this choice. Why people are critial of this just based out of fear. Its hard to really fully understand choices like this until they are our own.

I watched the full documentary after I watched this clip. It was certainly thought provoking. I’ve watched many Euthanasia / Assisted suicide documentaries over the years, & this was one of the ‘best’ in terms of exploring the thought processes behind it all.
I’ve always been very open to the fact that I am considering assisted suicide in my future. I suffer with 3 genetic chronic disabilities, & despite being in my early 30’s, they’re progressively getting worse as the years go by. My parents are in their early 70’s & I certainly wouldn’t go before them, but I’m unable to have a family of my own, with no partner to worry about I don’t feel i wish to live the rest of my days in uncontrollable pain. I’ve felt for a number of years now that I’m not living, just existing, & I would hate to be a burden on the remaining family I have (that are dotted around the country / world), & a drain on the NHS. I think it needs to be done on a case by case basis & everyone should have that right. I’d hate to be trapped in a body I’m no longer able to control. I understood the sadness & desperation of the lovely woman in this clip when I watched the documentary.

Laws need to change so people that aren't necessarily terminal are considered on a case by case basis but I definitely think many would be relieved if they new there was the choice and most wouldn't need it but knowing they have the option would help them live more reassured.

I'm a survivor of awake paralysis with suffocation and my 'death' then out of body experience during an unnecessary and very botched anaesthetic/surgery in the UK by the NHS.
There are no words to describe the torture of suffocation: I couldn't move (paralysed by their neuromuscular blocking drugs) and I couldn't breathe (life-threatening errors with breathing tube+) so I was trapped, unable to breathe for far too long (my brain felt like it was exploding with a sort of pressure) and eventually I had to accept my imminent death = I felt the most extreme sadness and loneliness and a void of emptiness - no gods, no friends/family, no love, no tunnel or wondrous light - complete and utter separation from everyone and everything: totally alone (but heard the anaesthetic registrar lie about me in his surly voice yet again as he had pre-op); then I had a brief out of body experience: my back against the wall looking down from ceiling(? it felt a little bit further than that) height; then I woke up in the Recover Room = totally astonished I was alive because I 'knew" I had died, it felt as though I had been 'out' for a very long time and I didn't know what day it was but I looked and saw the clock on the wall and could see what the time was.
So now my next, hopefully my last death, hangs over me daily, as every day goes by I feel dread that I'm a day closer to my death and I'm absolutely terrified of it. Before, as so many of us do, unless we have witnessed a bad death with breathing problems, gasping and so on, I believed there was a clear line and there was no gap between life and death and that it happened easily and fast (yes, I was very naive) but now I know how very dreadful and terrifying the dying process can be - and is for so many of us but this fact is mostly lied about and covered-up.
When the time comes I demand medical help to die pain-free, without pain, suffocation and paralysis and FAST, but here in the UK doctors are allowed to maim and kill us by mistake but they are not allowed to help us die a good and dignified death - this MUST change for me and so many others: I can't go through that TORTURE again, but I may have to unless and until the laws are changed. I plead with states and doctors to consider my evidence and experience (and those of so many others) and ensure that those who died whilst fighting for this right are remembered as aiding our progress towards treating death as part of like; in the UK it is promised that the NHS will look after us 'from cradle to grave' which is not true when they have caused serious injuries and also is not true because medics are not allowed to help us die quickly and peacefully when it's clear to all that this is what we really want and need. I do know that the safeguards which must be put in place are complicated and difficult and so many will fall into a grey area where abuses may occur, but somehow we MUST do something about this NOW. Thank you.

A few weeks later he was in the hospital with severe liver poisoning. He could have gotten a transplant had he stopped drinking for long enough to clean his system. Instead, he decided to go into hospice. The very last time I saw him, he was severely damaged mentally, completely powerless to care for himself. I desperately wanted him to realize the value of his life. He was a genius with a loving family, and he still had time in his life to do some great. He died a few days later. I wish that he at least didn't have to suffer for that long. Even if it only benefitted him, I think assisted suicide would've been the best outcome for him.

A hospital in Chelmsford, Essex killed my Dad with the 'Liverpool Pathway' with no consultation at all with our family; my Dad was just sore from lying in bed for so long. I knew something was 'off' when they withheld food and drink and put him on a morphine pump, which they kept topping up. I had never heard of the Liverpool Pathway at the time. 16 years later I am still traumatised, as I know that I watched the hospital staff murder my father. It would never have occurred to me that this could happen in my country, so why our politicians pretend this does not already happen is farical.

Humanity is taking too long to reconcile with the concept of assisted dying. There are many reasons why that is - the argument of mental illness for one. Can someone find peace through therapy, or can they only find peace through death? It's not a simple question to answer. But I think it's ridiculous we aren't providing the option of an assisted death for people who are terminally ill or in constant physical suffering that can't be helped with medication. I can understand reluctance to 'open the floodgates' of sanctioned suicide, but I think it's worse that people who are sick and dying don't get given an option of a dignified death the same way pets do. Outdated, old world morality is preventing us from showing mercy.

This should definitely be a legal service provided under certain circumstances. If someone gets news of an imminent, painful, horrifying death, they should be able to go home, get as comfortable as possible, and be provided with whatever machine that woman had made for her by hospice care. Take control of your own death. I don’t think it’s place of doctors in a hospital to euthanize when hospitals are crowded every day with people who have a fighting chance of survival, but providing the equipment for them to do it effectively and painlessly on their own terms is just humane. Veterinarians don’t let our pets die in an undignified manner, so why does society force us to die slow, painful deaths? Because it’s a lot nicer to the pockets of big medicine and of hospitals to slowly squeeze the life out of us rather than to peacefully end our suffering. And we all know big corporations are in bed with politicians so I don’t see those laws changing anytime soon.

Please don't include in these surveys of "right to end life" states like the US where the government grants permission to tiny, select groups who medical experts agree are very soon going to die. That is not a right. That's a (begrudging) permission. "The right to end our own lives" would entail individuals demonstrating awareness of what they're asking for and then, minimally, being entitled to acquire and use the means to end their own lives. Such a right is a claim on the government--that, minimally, it must protect you from control by others who do not agree with your decision. And there are very few jurisdictions in the world where citizens have such a right. The USA is not one of them.

People with mental illness cannot exorcise the evil spirit that is in them. They need a person who is filled with the power of the Holy Ghost to cast out that evil spirit for them. They can’t do it for themselves! See, there is a reason that caused the evil spirit to enter thst person in the first place! That person did not have a connection with God in the first place and was probably adding sins to their condition. This is how that evil spirit gained entry in the first place. Believe me, there is s whole lot going on than most people know or believe. Get close to God accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Confess your sins to God. He will forgive you.
If you think you still need spiritual help, contact someone who have God’s power in them. There are several of them right now in Africa doing God’s work! Prophet TB Joshua, Pastor Chris Oyakilhome and even Bishop David Oyedepo. These are Spurut filled people sent by God to deliver people who are oppressed by the devil. After the devil leaves, your prayers will be answered! But first get rid of the devil, get close to God by reading his Words and praying to him. Most importantly OBEY HIM. You do this by doing what his Words in the Bible tells you to do. eg. The Ten Commandments. Stop stealing, lying, commuting adultery, fornicating etc. live other people as you live your self. ie. Do to people what you want them to do to you. Even if they don’t do good things to you, still don’t do any evil. Evil is of the devil. That don’t mean because you want them to have sex with you, you should go and do that. NO!!!
Love them by being kind, respectful in speech and actions. Read Deutoronomy 5:6-21 and all of Deutoronomy 28.
These are for all mankind who wants to get close to God!
