I left my hockey bag in the garage all summer and when I took it out it was covered in mold. It looks bad, but it's easy to treat. Just pre-treat the mold with an oxygen bleach, then put it in the wash machine on a gentle setting for a long load with regular detergent. I easily got the mold out of my hockey equipment.
How often should you wash your hockey equipment?
I recommend washing your hockey equipment every month or so, but wash your jerseys, socks and under armour every week or two

Am I the only one that flinched when the scorpion animation came out of the skate?😂
That happened to me too!😅

Why did that scorpion scare the bloody hell out of me?! xDD
It scared me to

CMVids holy shit same
CMVids omg same
To Clean my Helmet I take off the Basket and give the helmet a quick soak in some warm water with baby shampoo. Then give it a rinse and let it dry. The Baby Shampoo ensures that any residue left over wont burn your eyes next time you sweat up.Not sure if that helps anyone but it works great for me and my son.
does any of this stuff shrink?
that is cool do you like hockey you can't Wash your hockey shoulder pads
why don’t you just store it inside in the nice air conditioning
Omg I actually got scared by the scorpion part I thought it was actually in the bag and I jumped!!😂
NerfandOtherStuff same 😂😂
NerfandOtherStuff same I flintched
NerfandOtherStuff same 😂it looks so real
NerfandOtherStuff me too! I'm such a pussy
NerfandOtherStuff holy shit same
Quick recommendation: I never leave my gear in my bag after a game or practice. That helps me keep the smell away for the most part. Takes just a few quick minutes to empty my bag and hang my gear on a drying rack.
Say WORD!!! And to wash the sweaty clothing! If you take a few mins after getting home with ya bag, it will make a world of difference imho...i CANT do the reekin equipment n shit!!!
Quick question: If you always air out your equipment, does that mean you don’t have to wash it?
Jason Huang if you do that after every ice time, you’d only have to do an annual deep clean.
Step 1: Take off gear
Step 2: Lay out gear
Step 3: Spray with Febreze
Step 4: Play hockey again
+Mmmmm Toast Who told you my secret method?!
That's what I do
That's what I do
I do same but with Lysol disinfectant lol
I put it on the hockey tree to dry overnight then I spray Lysol or Fabreeze on it. Skates I make sure to take off the soakers so they don't get a chance to rust out.
"Remember, don't forget your Stanley Cup" Haha #VeteranMove
Omg i shit myself when the scorpion came upq
mackiwawa everyone did hahahaha
me too!!! ahahah
me too
I keep a spray bottle with 50/50 solution of water and distilled white vinegar. After games I take everything out of my bag, spray it all down, and then leave it out to dry with a fan. Works really well for me, makes it so I only have to give my gear a thorough wash every month or so.
don't forget your Stanley Cup LOL you freaking comedian
Thanks for this. I started watching your channel when my son started playing years ago and now that he has been playing for years and is getting older the funk has arrived. I wasn't sure if we could clean his stuff this way but a friend mentioned it and your vid reinforced. Keep up the good work.
Omg when he talks about the jocks when he says "don't forget about your Stanley cups" i died 😂😂 Jeremy your hilarious man, that would be cool if i had you as coach, why are you not in the NHL
Huh
02:43 - I'd be less concerned about the hockey gear (for the reasons you stated) but more worried about my washing machine. Hockey gear is meant to take a beating. Modern washing machines, not so much.
That gear must've been pre-prepped props. Kind of like those pre-cooked casseroles on those cooking shows when they open the oven on the set kitchen, except no ooo's & ahhh's. Seriously, there's a lotta love in your vids dude: changing camera angles, good cuts, always sufficiently lit, etc.
We're in So. Cal. so what I like to do is get out the power washer, load up the soap reservoir with some of that oxygenated detergent, and blast that stank into my neighbors yard. Then just leave the stuff to dry on the lawn.
Anyone else jump at the scorpion image...
^
William Lucas everyone did hahahahaah
I ALWAYS take my gear out of the bag the second I got home and air dry it.
I found a birds nest in my pants
"For christ's sakes put your Bird back in the cage"
Stank hockey gear is problematic, but I’d sleep in a bed made from my goalie gear before I’d put that heavy scent stuff on it. My dad sprayed my gear with Febreeze and I was miserable until it wore off! I guess it’s not scent perse, but sweet or “heavy” smells just make me pukey.

You can put a helmet on the top row of a dish washer
Is that true
works on any shelf!
the scorpion scared the fuck out of me
Please stop the madness. I can't tell you how many people think they should not wash their equipment. The smell that penetrates through their bags leave stink for weeks to come whenever they put it down. These players are so smelly. I wash my sons basics every week and his equipment every other month. Please wash your stuff. Just don't dry it. I have been doing it for years and it never ruins his equipment.
How long does it take for the stuff (gloves, pads) to air dry? Wondering if it will be ready for 5 tomorrow night (it's 9 at night now).
The cheap liter of vodka. Take your gear out when you get home, get a cheap dollar spray bottle from your local retailer, and spray it down till it's slightly wet to the touch. Hang it and let it dry. It never stinks!
At 1:14 was it just me or when the scorpion came out did it scare you
Waiden Nicholls it's just you
Don't forget your Stanley cup
50/50 mix of rubbing or isopropyl alcohol and water. buy a nice spray bottle and spray all sweat areas after games to kill the odor causing bacteria. Works and is cheap
If you have wet gear from playing or washing and have a de-humidifier in the basement you can lay everything out around it and it will suck it dry in about 45 minutes. Works like a charm.
Random question but what if we put the helmet in the top of the dishwasher on a steam cycle? Lol anyone tried that?
I think the best thing to do is to go to the nearest laundromat, haul all of your gear there (except skates and helmet), and wash it all there. Laundromats have huge machines that can take the whole kit at once. It costs a little more money to do it but you will get a very thorough and consistent wash I have found. This is better for the people who don't have the best washing machines and/or are afraid to damage them.
Thanks for this video. My son is beginning to play this sport and I have no idea what to do. I already subscribed to your channel for more tips.
Really enjoy all your videos, entertaining and informative. Outside of washing the kit pre season have you any tips for keeping your kit fresh through the season. Mine is about to walk out flat in its own after a few weeks of training sessions.
+Flanners14 Wear something under your gear and take that out and wash it after each skate. That keeps a lot of sweat and bacteria out of your equipment. Hang everything to dry before you pack it up, and every month or so follow the steps in this video.
+The Hockey Movement thanks very much. I already wear stuff underneath but will fire some stuff in the machine. Keep up the good work.
+The Hockey Movement This is probably the best, most important video you've made. (for me that is)
+Nick Heilmann thanks very much mate, I will see if I can find myself some space.
I play year round and my equipment barely smells. I live in an apartment so I dont have a ton of space and also do not want my bag to be stinking up the whole place. I wear underarmor underneath when I play to minimize sweat both on my body and equipment. Also, when I get home I immediately take out the equipment and lay it on the floor (If you have a fan of some sort, put the fan on the equipment), and spray it with "Pure Green 24" (google it) its an organic mix that can be bought right on amazon which kills bacteria that causes staph infections and other things without irritating your skin like a household disinfectant might. After a few hours or less it dries out and barely has an odor. Most of the odor in hockey equipment comes from bacteria that forms from the moisture in the bag. The combination of eliminating that odor + spraying anti-bacteria spray on the equipment and inside of the bag is a quick and simple way to keep the gear fresh without washing it every 3 months. I also religiously wash my underarmor / hockey socks / Jersey (Sometimes even shell) after each use even if I run down and put 5 pieces of gear in the wash. Obviously its best if you have 2-3 sets of everything to make it easier and a bit more cost efficient on the washing process.
everyone needs to know its ok to put gear in washer! taking out and drying with a fan after use is great - add long sleeved and long legged base layers, and the only thing really touching skin is gloves. that real hockey stank is decomposing skin fyi, so less contact the better!
tip from europe: put your helmet in your dishwasher and wash it with glass program. works fine ;-)
+Matthias Werner lol really?
Matthias Werner the detergent will destroy the integrity of the plastic shell
Thank you! My son has some terrible rink stink!😷
i laughed my butt off with that stanly cup joke
Michael Rosa ikr!!!
Guys remember what he said never forget your Stanley cup
Y’all talkin bout the scorpions, I died at the mouse one
Yo that scorpion though 😂💔💔I'm shook
I'm new to hockey, as is my son. But, I got a tip from my police officer brother-in-law: he sprays the inside of his vest with an anti-bacterial Lysol and air drys.
After every skate - and yes we're tired - we lightly spray/spritz the inside of all gear, give a quick wipe with a towel, and hang dry in the garage (we live in So Cal, so it's dry in there, plus, we have little humidity in our region).
No smell......and we don't put our nose to our jock to find out, either. hahaha
I am not a salesperson for this company but check out "Pure Green 24". Its similiar to Lysol but purely organic, and will be less irritating on your skin. I used to use lysol too and would once in a while get some skin irritation if my bare skin touched it. I switched to this stuff with the same result and no irritation, following just about the same process as you outlined above. You can get it cheap on amazon for a big bottle
Are there any beginner classes for adults in So Cal?
Along with the news paper I keep a few of those silica gell packs in my bad you the things that say "DO NOT EAT" on them
I save those whenever I can and throw them in the skates and bag. They do work very well. Hard to get out of the fingers of gloves though.
Thanks for the video! I'm now 18. I've been playing hockey all my life and my equipment stinks if I open my bag, the stink goes across the house! My dad hates the stink more than anything and if the stink goes across the house he grounds me for a week! Is that unfair?
My parents recently moved to a log cabin out in the woods, and my dad's been off the ice for 10 years now but keeps all of his gear in the shed. To make a long story short, I finally got him out on the ice this past season, and as he went to put his Supreme 2000s on he tipped the boot and a pile of bird seed fell out. Turns out a family of mice/squirrels had been living in his gear and hoarding all their food in his skates.
Moral of the story - Keep your gear in a container during the offseason. You never know what kind of critters can be lurking around your garage.
I'm pretty bad about actually cleaning my gear, and since I live in an apartment my girlfriend makes me keep my gear outside, so I bought one of these bad boys.

It fits all my gear, it locks, and it's heavy duty. But it is black, so when you open it on those hot summer days it's like getting punched in the face with a hurricane of stank.
Anything except helmet and skates can be washed in a washer. Been doing it for years...and I know a few goalies that do it as well with their blockers and gloves. They spray down their shin pads, scrub them with a brush and a little wash soap, and let them dry out. Remember, anything you sweat in can get wet! I hang my gear up after every game, etc on a stand I bought at IKEA for about 10 bucks. I wash everything 2 or three times times during a season too. There's no reason to smell like garbage. Think classy and you'll be classy.
When you make it to the show you can have smelly gear and the press will think you're "colorful". Until you make it to the show, it makes you a slob!
how about goalie equipment? is it ok to put the glove, blocker and the jock into washing machine?
Goalie gear has a lot of leather and does do as well. I know guys who do but it breaks it down pretty quick. Chestie, shorts, neck guard and those sorts of things are fine but the other stuff I would avoid.
Skyked Tranovski I do pretty much the same thing, but I use oxy clean. 1 scoop in the bathtub & all the equipment goes in to soak for about an hour. I’ll agitate it ever 10 minutes or so. And I wash, dry & Febreze my stuff after every time I play.

I wash my protective gear in the bathtub with laundry detergent, then hang dry outside. I wash my soft gear every time. I'm going to get some Febreeze anti-bacteria. thanks for the tip.
Jeremy or anyone else I could really use some help please! Back in May my fiance's cat pissed all over my bag with equipment in it and I've done everything I can think of to get the smell out and nothing has worked. I've tried the following: 1) anti bacterial spray 2) vinegar (bad idea learned the hard way) 3) hot water and soap 4) lots of fabreez 5) local sports store for ozone/uv treatment 6) pet deodorizer (best results so far but still some smell).
I'll try using washing machine now I now it won't wreck my equipment but any and all advice to help with the situation is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Vinegar didn't work? I think you need to neutralize the odours first using baking soda solution.
When that scorpion came out of the bag i jumped. :/
pussy
same here i looked stupid jumping in the middle of class
All 36 dislikes were the people who got scared by the “scorpion”
Buy a can or 2 of fresh frogger spray it on all your equipment and the inside of your bag zip up the bag and leave it over night with all your equipment in it then in the morning put your equipment in the washer I do this every season and it honestly works the reason is the bacteria in your sweat grows till finally everything smells fresh frogger kills all the bacteria(source of the smell) and the washer gets rid of any dirt or grime and the stink in the equipment
Step one buy a huge house
Great tips. Just cleaned some goalie pants that were rank. The odor is completely gone. I put them on air dry in the dryer and it seemed to work out well.
I keep them in the sun and in the winter I just leave em so these tips will really help. Thanks huge fan btw
I heard a nightmare story of someone finding BLACK WIDOWS not just 1 or 2 but A WHOLE CLUSTER. If you don’t know already Black Widows are VENOMOUS (Death is rare but still it ain’t fun being bit by one or finding them in your skates) yea. Clean your gear folks.
Omg I actually got scared by the scorpion part I thought it was actually in the bag and I jumped!!
For my skates, I have kept adidas sneaker balls in them for years and they always smell great. Thanks for the tutorial!
I've gotten spiders in my gloves
I got scared when that scorpion came out of the skate
Lol me to
I ruined 2 pairs of pants in the washer FML. I think you should tell everyone to put the laundry machine on a gentle handwash cycle
I'd use vinegar and never bleach. Vinegar is completely harmless but bleach you never want near you like that
I would not put paper in it personally, I tried that and my gear became a home for silverfish
that scorpion made me throw up.
ALL my stuff gets taken out of my bag and hung, within minutes of me getting home. I play 2-3 times a week and my bag never smells. For stuff I cant wash, I use Sidelines Odor-Magic
My stanley cup is extra small, but my board checks are xxl!
OMG WHEN THE SCORPIAN POPPED OUT I SCREAMED
That scorpion scared the SHIT out of me when it popped up lmfaoo
if anyone here is like me and doesn’t have the same cleaning product he has lysol spray also works
When I was six my hockey bag was out side and it was closed but there was eylets on it and bees made a nesr in there😬
I just Lysol everything
Edie the scorpion scare anyone else too?
Use Dr.Scholls foot beds they are cheaper and way better.
One of my hockey strengths is the awful smell of my equipment.
Where do you find antibacterial spray?
YIKES WHEN THE SCORPIONS CAME OUT THEY SCARED THE SHIT OUT OF ME
Or just close your bag then you won’t get nothin in ur bag
That scorpion fucking scared the shit out of me
I live in NC. We have Black Widows & Brown recluses. They LOVE dark places like Hockey bags.
wow, time for some new gear. lol
Having a really hard time getting my gloves clean. Iv'e washed them many times, but the stink stays.
Try vinegar, or menthol isopropyl alcohol as a prewash. You can add vinegar to the wash also.
Vinegar works. Also, after about 7 plus years of consistent hockey your gloves are going to pretty much be toast anyway
thank you for sharing!!
I used Boot Bananas for my skates. But they don't sell them in Czech Republic. I just put gloves and shin pads in the washing machine as I got a weird rash on one part of one finger - which I presume is stinky-glove related.
Брат, в таком старье даже в России не играют. )))))
Spray bottle with 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. Add some downy washer additive scented thingys for fragrance. Works well for for my smelly kid
People... very simple: DON'T BE LIKE JEREMY
Air your stuff out and hang it... off the ground. And if you're adventuresome, throw the stuff in a washer (not one with an agitator though dummies) with a couple cups of vinegar after the season ends. Really that simple.
hey bro, appreciate the vid...i play both forward n goalie...does all this same stuff apply to goalie gear? or r u not aware?
lol, people that got scared of that scorpion... I come from Arizona, they are everywhere, it's normal for them to pop up haha.
So glad we don't smell-o-vision! 😅 Thanks for the helpful video!
Awesome. Thank you!
Personally I recommend Lysol over Fabreeze.
ONE TIME I FOUND A WHALE IN MY SKATE
I live in Canada...
I found a big black spider the size of a plate in my bag...
I brought it to a spider place and it's not native to here...
Help...
My son's hockey equipment was left to dry in our yard in SoCal, and I discovered a huge family of crickets all over it. Apparently they like sweaty fabrics. Will be cleaning!
hang up yer stuff after training. I use a simple clothes rack and a plastic bucket for my skates. when i wash my gear i use liquid detergent for gentle garments (like woolite or similar) on a warm cyckle. I've used white vinegar in the pre-wash sometimes. this gets done 2x/year as i play year rund. Good luck!
Throwing in a few of those silica gel packs you get in pill bottles or beef jerky helps keep stuff dry.
After every game I hang my gear on a tree in my furnace room. I also spray it down with Lysol or febreeze etc. I then have a fan that oscillates. Every third game I was all my gear except skates and helmet. There are guys in my dressing room who stink. I play three times a week. Tip- put your shins lads in your socks and tie them off so they stay in. Otherwise your Velcro starts will get messed up.
I mix up a spray bottle with 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water and spray my equipment off about once every 3 games and lay it out to dry after every game. No smell at all.
After every game and practice I wipe my gear down with baby wipes and spray with an all natural antibacterial spray, and let it air out for the week. Once a month I give my gear a bath. Just fill the tub up with hot water, throw some Tide in there and give a good soak for about two hours, rise it off, lay it out to dry.
How do you clean the dirt and grime off the back of goalie pads? (Never mind the stink!). Fronts are easy to clean.
