    Join us online: Instagram and Twitter @howtohockey Stink is a big problem for hockey players, it's become a part of the culture, but there is a way to treat it. In this video I show you how to clean your hockey equipment so it doesn't stink!
    I left my hockey bag in the garage all summer and when I took it out it was covered in mold. It looks bad, but it's easy to treat. Just pre-treat the mold with an oxygen bleach, then put it in the wash machine on a gentle setting for a long load with regular detergent. I easily got the mold out of my hockey equipment.
    How often should you wash your hockey equipment?
    I recommend washing your hockey equipment every month or so, but wash your jerseys, socks and under armour every week or two

    To Clean my Helmet I take off the Basket and give the helmet a quick soak in some warm water with baby shampoo. Then give it a rinse and let it dry. The Baby Shampoo ensures that any residue left over wont burn your eyes next time you sweat up.Not sure if that helps anyone but it works great for me and my son.

    Quick recommendation: I never leave my gear in my bag after a game or practice. That helps me keep the smell away for the most part. Takes just a few quick minutes to empty my bag and hang my gear on a drying rack.

    I keep a spray bottle with 50/50 solution of water and distilled white vinegar. After games I take everything out of my bag, spray it all down, and then leave it out to dry with a fan. Works really well for me, makes it so I only have to give my gear a thorough wash every month or so.

    That gear must've been pre-prepped props. Kind of like those pre-cooked casseroles on those cooking shows when they open the oven on the set kitchen, except no ooo's & ahhh's. Seriously, there's a lotta love in your vids dude: changing camera angles, good cuts, always sufficiently lit, etc.
    We're in So. Cal. so what I like to do is get out the power washer, load up the soap reservoir with some of that oxygenated detergent, and blast that stank into my neighbors yard. Then just leave the stuff to dry on the lawn.

    Please stop the madness. I can't tell you how many people think they should not wash their equipment. The smell that penetrates through their bags leave stink for weeks to come whenever they put it down. These players are so smelly. I wash my sons basics every week and his equipment every other month. Please wash your stuff. Just don't dry it. I have been doing it for years and it never ruins his equipment.

    If you have wet gear from playing or washing and have a de-humidifier in the basement you can lay everything out around it and it will suck it dry in about 45 minutes. Works like a charm.

    I think the best thing to do is to go to the nearest laundromat, haul all of your gear there (except skates and helmet), and wash it all there. Laundromats have huge machines that can take the whole kit at once. It costs a little more money to do it but you will get a very thorough and consistent wash I have found. This is better for the people who don't have the best washing machines and/or are afraid to damage them.

      +Flanners14 Wear something under your gear and take that out and wash it after each skate. That keeps a lot of sweat and bacteria out of your equipment. Hang everything to dry before you pack it up, and every month or so follow the steps in this video.

      I play year round and my equipment barely smells. I live in an apartment so I dont have a ton of space and also do not want my bag to be stinking up the whole place. I wear underarmor underneath when I play to minimize sweat both on my body and equipment. Also, when I get home I immediately take out the equipment and lay it on the floor (If you have a fan of some sort, put the fan on the equipment), and spray it with "Pure Green 24" (google it) its an organic mix that can be bought right on amazon which kills bacteria that causes staph infections and other things without irritating your skin like a household disinfectant might. After a few hours or less it dries out and barely has an odor. Most of the odor in hockey equipment comes from bacteria that forms from the moisture in the bag. The combination of eliminating that odor + spraying anti-bacteria spray on the equipment and inside of the bag is a quick and simple way to keep the gear fresh without washing it every 3 months. I also religiously wash my underarmor / hockey socks / Jersey (Sometimes even shell) after each use even if I run down and put 5 pieces of gear in the wash. Obviously its best if you have 2-3 sets of everything to make it easier and a bit more cost efficient on the washing process.

  • @matthewr7946
    @matthewr7946 8 лет назад +2

    everyone needs to know its ok to put gear in washer! taking out and drying with a fan after use is great - add long sleeved and long legged base layers, and the only thing really touching skin is gloves. that real hockey stank is decomposing skin fyi, so less contact the better!

    I'm new to hockey, as is my son. But, I got a tip from my police officer brother-in-law: he sprays the inside of his vest with an anti-bacterial Lysol and air drys.
    After every skate - and yes we're tired - we lightly spray/spritz the inside of all gear, give a quick wipe with a towel, and hang dry in the garage (we live in So Cal, so it's dry in there, plus, we have little humidity in our region).
    No smell......and we don't put our nose to our jock to find out, either. hahaha

    • @SchweitzerScott
      @SchweitzerScott 8 лет назад +1

      I am not a salesperson for this company but check out "Pure Green 24". Its similiar to Lysol but purely organic, and will be less irritating on your skin. I used to use lysol too and would once in a while get some skin irritation if my bare skin touched it. I switched to this stuff with the same result and no irritation, following just about the same process as you outlined above. You can get it cheap on amazon for a big bottle

  • @johnnykirkwood4817
    @johnnykirkwood4817 9 лет назад +1

    My parents recently moved to a log cabin out in the woods, and my dad's been off the ice for 10 years now but keeps all of his gear in the shed. To make a long story short, I finally got him out on the ice this past season, and as he went to put his Supreme 2000s on he tipped the boot and a pile of bird seed fell out. Turns out a family of mice/squirrels had been living in his gear and hoarding all their food in his skates.
    Moral of the story - Keep your gear in a container during the offseason. You never know what kind of critters can be lurking around your garage.
    I'm pretty bad about actually cleaning my gear, and since I live in an apartment my girlfriend makes me keep my gear outside, so I bought one of these bad boys.
    www.lowes.com/pd_650360-230-3725NNL-4_1z13eb3Z2z8vn__?productId=50396488&pl=1
    It fits all my gear, it locks, and it's heavy duty. But it is black, so when you open it on those hot summer days it's like getting punched in the face with a hurricane of stank.

    Anything except helmet and skates can be washed in a washer. Been doing it for years...and I know a few goalies that do it as well with their blockers and gloves. They spray down their shin pads, scrub them with a brush and a little wash soap, and let them dry out. Remember, anything you sweat in can get wet! I hang my gear up after every game, etc on a stand I bought at IKEA for about 10 bucks. I wash everything 2 or three times times during a season too. There's no reason to smell like garbage. Think classy and you'll be classy.
    When you make it to the show you can have smelly gear and the press will think you're "colorful". Until you make it to the show, it makes you a slob!

Back in May my fiance's cat pissed all over my bag with equipment in it and I've done everything I can think of to get the smell out and nothing has worked. I've tried the following: 1) anti bacterial spray 2) vinegar (bad idea learned the hard way) 3) hot water and soap 4) lots of fabreez 5) local sports store for ozone/uv treatment 6) pet deodorizer (best results so far but still some smell).

    Buy a can or 2 of fresh frogger spray it on all your equipment and the inside of your bag zip up the bag and leave it over night with all your equipment in it then in the morning put your equipment in the washer I do this every season and it honestly works the reason is the bacteria in your sweat grows till finally everything smells fresh frogger kills all the bacteria(source of the smell) and the washer gets rid of any dirt or grime and the stink in the equipment

      Vinegar works. Also, after about 7 plus years of consistent hockey your gloves are going to pretty much be toast anyway

    I used Boot Bananas for my skates. But they don't sell them in Czech Republic. I just put gloves and shin pads in the washing machine as I got a weird rash on one part of one finger - which I presume is stinky-glove related.

    Spray bottle with 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. Add some downy washer additive scented thingys for fragrance. Works well for for my smelly kid

    People... very simple: DON'T BE LIKE JEREMY
    Air your stuff out and hang it... off the ground. And if you're adventuresome, throw the stuff in a washer (not one with an agitator though dummies) with a couple cups of vinegar after the season ends. Really that simple.

    My son's hockey equipment was left to dry in our yard in SoCal, and I discovered a huge family of crickets all over it. Apparently they like sweaty fabrics. Will be cleaning!

    hang up yer stuff after training. I use a simple clothes rack and a plastic bucket for my skates. when i wash my gear i use liquid detergent for gentle garments (like woolite or similar) on a warm cyckle. I've used white vinegar in the pre-wash sometimes. this gets done 2x/year as i play year rund. Good luck!

    Throwing in a few of those silica gel packs you get in pill bottles or beef jerky helps keep stuff dry.

    After every game I hang my gear on a tree in my furnace room. I also spray it down with Lysol or febreeze etc. I then have a fan that oscillates. Every third game I was all my gear except skates and helmet. There are guys in my dressing room who stink. I play three times a week. Tip- put your shins lads in your socks and tie them off so they stay in. Otherwise your Velcro starts will get messed up.

    I mix up a spray bottle with 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water and spray my equipment off about once every 3 games and lay it out to dry after every game. No smell at all.

    After every game and practice I wipe my gear down with baby wipes and spray with an all natural antibacterial spray, and let it air out for the week. Once a month I give my gear a bath. Just fill the tub up with hot water, throw some Tide in there and give a good soak for about two hours, rise it off, lay it out to dry.

    How do you clean the dirt and grime off the back of goalie pads? (Never mind the stink!). Fronts are easy to clean.
