This is FANTASTIC Steve! I knew you interviewed Dan with those small excerpts with few direct quotes placed in the article as it was originally printed in GW. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Yeah, it was like hearing a lot of the stuff that we read about in the guitar world magazine, but of course much more! I’m a huge fan of the wildlife so always happy to hear info about that and the stuff he used on that.

Great interview! It's good to know Edward got the first Steinberger guitar ( didn't know that ). But I'm confused: At the 11:02 mark, Dan refers to the Flying V as being used on the 5150 album for the solo to " 5150." If the interview date is 1985, does that mean that the " 5150 " song was recorded before the interview date?
I was under the impression that most of the 5150 album was recorded after the summer of 1985.
    Fun insight into Edward's world.

I can explain…first, I’m not sure of the exact date of Steve’s interview, but I can say that the excerpts from it didn’t appear in print until the July 1988 issue of Guitar World. Another clear indicator that the 1985 date is wrong is what you mentioned about the release date of the ‘5150’ album. Dan couldn’t have known the title of the album or the title song in July of 1985 since it wasn’t released until March of 1986 (and you are correct that it was recorded in the late summer of 1985…Sammy didn’t have his first jam with the band until July 14, 1985. I believe this interview was almost certainly conducted around April or May of 1988.
As for Edward’s use of the ‘58 Flying V on the track “5150” from the album of the same name, neither Dan nor Steven say that it was used for the “lead solo” parts of that song. In fact, the Flying V was used for the entire main guitar track all the way through until the end of the song…the lead guitar was done with a Floyd Rose vibrato equipped guitar-which was almost certainly the 5150 Kramer.

@@AllenGarberGuitarFun Since you’ve got the goods on Edward’s gear, any info on that Song Wireless set that Edward used for the 5150 tour? I’m listening to Zekk’s interview with Steven ( from back in 1986 ) and would love to hear more about it. I wonder what made it special?

@@Jedizen07I think it was “special” for its time. I think it was a bit more transparent than the original Schaffer-Vega unit that Eddie used beginning in mid 1978…Eddie did not like the distinctive pre-amp sound from the Schaffer-Vega that colored his tone too much to his liking. I wouldn’t say that the Sony wireless is any kind of thing to seek out for tone shaping since I think it didn’t do anything to Eddie’s tone…and that’s why he liked it.
