- Dr. Rich shows you how to use custom whitening trays. Whitening trays are also known as bleaching trays and are used to whiten teeth at home. Dr. Rich uses Opalescence whitening gel by Ultradent in the video but the technique will work for other brands of tooth bleaching gel as well. He shows how to load bleaching gel into the custom bleaching trays, how to insert the trays into your mouth, and how to clean the whitening trays after you are done using them.
I made a chart of wear times for different strengths of whitening gel.

I have been so afraid to use my trays despite my dentist explaining. But seeing it makes me feel so much better. Finally gonna use em after over a month of having em.
Thank you, my dentist didn't explain the correct way and I think a dental office should refer patients to a video. I used Opalescence and their video was awful.
You're welcome! Thank you very much for watching! Let me know how the whitening works for you.
I have Opalescence as well
Same! I’m pretty frustrated that my dentist didn’t provide me with any instructions.
Hi, won't it give uneven results just putting a small drop of gel in the trays? Also does it have to be carried out on consecutive nights , when first whitening teeth? Many thanks ❤

just got my trays done from my dentist. thank you so much for this video, especially washing the trays with cold water part, almost ruined mine.
This video was so helpful! It answered my questions and im glad you mentioned that burns are possible. My dentist brushed over that fact and I was unpleasantly surprised when a little excess got on my gums. :(

Thanks! Makes more sense than what the technician told me. She said put gel in base crevice area. I was wondering why not on the face of tooth.

My dental assistant told me the same thing
I have the trays with the custom dots inside them. For cleaning, I have success with my sink hose while it's in 'shower mode' or whatever it's called. The needles spray. It gets all of the gel out quickly!
Great tip! Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for this very comprehensive video. It has helped me a lot. May you continue to be blessed ❤

Great video. I tried to get explanation from my dental office but they rushed through. I had no idea without seeing complete visual as you did. Thanks for tip on cold water to wash! I'm sure I would have used hot not knowing.

Great video, thank you.

Doc, thank you for the video. After having the trays and gel sitting in my fridge for over a year I'm finally doing the bleaching. I was honestly just so happy with the results of my braces that I feel I didn't need the extra bleaching. I am finally ready, especially now that there's a video that carefully demonstrates the drop-by-drop method. Thank you!

LMAO. I used to use Crest Whitening Strips 2-3 times per week. I got lazy after purchasing my kit because the strips are so convenient.
We must be twins because I paid for the tray and gel kit from my dentist last year. I have NOT used the kit in a year. I just started using it today after asking the dental tech a few questions on Friday.
Excellent video and clear concise advice. Thanks

Excellent! You clarified what i was struggling with using my first gel tube. (I was able to get 2.5 days from one tube = filled 5 trays using both methods you explained)

Thanks for the video. I was concerned I would not apply the gel correctly but now I know what to do.

Thank you! That was very clear and concise, and it answered all my many questions 🙏🏽
My “polyday” gel is from “2018-01”. Yes, I got it four years ago, and just procrastinated! My teeth have never been such a shade of yellow, and I’m really eager to whiten up! I don’t drink coffee, and barely any wine or tea… it’s just time.
Just tried the first tube today. It comes out as a gel, not as a liquid. I have kept it in the fridge, I am hopeful that it will still work to some degree.
The lower tray fits fine, the upper one, not as great. The upper one also causes me to have it get a mouthful of saliva, as well, so I may have to get a re-fitting 😞 to be able to tolerate it.
The tubes say “9.5% hydrogen peroxide gel”. The dental assistant said to use it for *20 minutes*, which is markedly different from the amount of time you’re recommending. I’m going to call them to check if I mis-heard, or if they have another reason for that amount of time.
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge 🙂
You need less wear time with hydrogen peroxide gels. I use carbamide peroxide gels which need longer wear times. Thank you very much for watching!
@@VeryNiceSmileDental I have carbamidr peroxide can I wear for 2 hours? My dentist also did not tell me how long..

Hey doc, thanks for the video! I’m using KöR for the whitening, but I have a question: does the actual teeth bleaching come from the gel-syringes or the last in-office bleaching?
Thank you in advance!
Hi, I haven't used Kor whitening but I have heard of it. Usually whitening is a function of the strength of the whitening gel and how long you use (both the amount of time it stays on the tooth, and the number of days you wear the trays).
Merci beaucoup docteur

Can you use the gel on the underside of the teeth as if you're biting to get that part of the teeth white as well?
The honestly from this dentist on how to save money an get the most out your whitening makes me want to schedule an appointment with him. He doesn't seem money hungry and I'd actually give him my business just off this video. (Well at least see how he did personally)
Thanks! If you are in my neighborhood, stop by and say hello!
@@VeryNiceSmileDental I'm in the Midwest so far to the west otherwise I just might. Have a good memorial day!
Love the video! Question: I noticed that I am salivating a lot, not sure if it is safe for me to swallow, right now my solution is to keep spitting in a cup. I am using the Philips Zoom 16%.
Anytime you put something in your mouth, your mouth thinks it's food and will start salivating more. You can swallow your saliva safely. As long as your whitening trays fit your teeth well, you won't be swallowing much of the whitening gel.
Helpful video thank you! My dentist told me to spread the gel across the front of the mould over all the teeth. Should I do this or just leave a line/ dot of the product then insert. Thank you
Hi, I use the line method personally. The trays have a tight fit so the gel will spread out by itself.
Thank you for the detailed video. Better than my dentist experience. Question is it okay that my gum tissue in between my teeth turned white?
Hi, the whiteness is cause by the gel getting on your gum tissue. Make sure your trays fit properly and use a little less gel.
Hi Doc, thanks for your video and demonstration. Does it matter if you complete the treatment in one go. Or can you take a few days off between applications?
You can take a few days off, but you will get better results faster by doing it everyday. Are you getting some sensitivity?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental yes I’m struggling with the sensitivity. But still enjoying the results so far. It’s a shame you have to complete the course in consecutive days for the best results. Because it’s a big commitment wearing it every night for 2 weeks

Hi doc. Thanks for the informative video. Can I use the retainer tray as a substitute for this tray? It is made of plastic and a little sturdy.
You can use them if they fit properly. I would recommend a set of whitening trays just to be safe.
Great video! I have a question though, my dentist told me not to brush my teeth immediately after removing the trays because it would remove the dental enamel which is softened due to the bleach. However in your video you recommend brushing your teeth after removing the trays. Have you ever experienced problems with your dental enamel?
Hi, the gel does not soften the enamel on your teeth. I've been using it for over 20 years and haven't had any issues.
Thanks for the vid, my dentist didn't tell me how to properly use. Can you spread the gel with the end of the syringe?
Hi, you don't need to spread the gel. There is very little space under the tray and the gel will spread by itself.
Thank you. Does the gel penetrate the teeth and make the whole teeth white or only the front?
You're welcome. Yes the gel penetrates the teeth and makes the whole tooth white.
Thanks for the video doc. Can you use it with your orthodontic retainers instead of this tray?
Hi, yes if the retainers are made correctly to allow for whitening. The retainer needs to cover the teeth completely but not cover the gums on the cheek side of the teeth.
Hello doc ,thank u for the great explanation . My question is there any risk to damage ur gum ? I try to not touch ith with the product but im just afraid of the secondary effects
Hi, the whitening trays should be trimmed so that they don't cover your gums. The trays will keep the gel on the teeth and your gums will be fine.
Hello doctor, just came across your video, thank you so much for the details. Im using 20% and used it for 7 and ahalf hour, and kinda feel sensitive. So, i might reduce down my time to only 3hrs.
Hi, that's too long a time. Ultradent recommends 2-4 hours for 20%. I'll send you a table of recommended wear times for different strengths of whitening gel.
thank you so much
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
Hey Doc, first, thanks a million for the video an clear explanation! I just started my whitening process with philips zoom 16%. I applied a drop on every teeth but I can barely see the gel after all the salivation that is going on in my mouth 😅. Is that normal or if it keeps happening every day it will reduce the effectivity of the treatment?
You're welcome. Just to be sure, you are using trays?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental yes, but it feels like the saliva manages to go inside as I can taste the product the whole time
Do the trays fit properly? You will be able to taste the gel while you are wearing the trays. The trays should fit onto your teeth well.
Thank you! I got zero instruction from my dentist or the assistant who took my impressions. The front desk receptionist just handed them to me, told me to try them in right then and there to find out if they fit, but I had to ask questions about what and how to use the bleach and the desenstizing gel they provided too. It was awkward. Good thing she went back and asked how to use it, or I'd have used it wrong because she told me wrong. This doctor here gave great, plain instructions, and I'm grateful I found this video.
Hello! How long does it take for the result to appear?
Hello! How long should you wait before you can use another gel?thanks for the vid!
You're welcome. Use the gel once per day.
I didn’t know you could use the snap off but as a cap - just snapped it off and threw it away. I’m using clingfilm over it to try and stop it running out. Anyone got any advice on better ideas?
Pull back on the syringe after you dispense the gel
Hi , Great video. I’m just about to use the 35%Opalescence. What’s the maximum time to keep this gel on the teeth??
Hi, recommended wear time for 35% Opalescence (carbamide peroxide) is 30 to 60 minutes once per day.
Hi, great video, thank you! What wear time do you usually recommend for this Opalescence 16 % concentration?
You're welcome! The recommended wear time for the 15% concentration is 4-6 hours. If your teeth are not too sensitive, you can try overnight.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental And what is the wear time for 22% gell
@@abhireddy1281 The recommended wear time is 2-4 hours. General rule of thumb is as the concentration goes up (the gel gets stronger) the wear time goes down.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental How did you have a 16% when it comes in 15\20?
Will i have to get a new tray if I've done a composite bonding on my 2 front teeth?
You might. Bring your tray with you so your dentist can evaluate the fit after they place the bonding.
I have the 22% Carbamide Peroxide and after I open it do i need to put it in the refrigerator or is room temperature okay? I am not sure if it will make a difference.
Apologies.🤦♂️ You explained it in the video. Thank you for the video..... Also, one last question, how long do these last if they are not refrigerated or after initially receiving them, if you know what I mean?
Hi there. I have some whitening gel (polanight 16%) and im wondering if I can use it overnight for a few days straight. Would this affect the enamel in any way? Thanks
Hi, you should be able to use the 16% gel overnight. It won't affect your enamel but you will probably get some sensitivity.
Hi doc,I started using mine tonight.
Does the gel bleach the tooth from the bottom upwards or the whole teeth or in spots?
Hi, due to the tight fit of the trays, the gel will get to the entire tooth.
Thank you doctor. Is it ok to drink water while wearing the trays? Even with a straw?
Hi, don't eat or drink anything while you are wearing the whitening trays.
Many thanks
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
Many thanks doc for this informative video. My question is, how do i use that tracking card? Seems like I missed that part from my docs explanation. Thank you
Hi, tracking card, is that a color guide?
How many nights do i use this process ?, my dentist said 2 weeks but that seems alot of treatments when my friend said only one night
I usually recommend 2 weeks. Some people need more time, some people need less time.
Hi there! Do you know how long to keep it on for and also, how often are you supposed to use it if you want whiter teeth and visible results?
Hi, yes I do! I just posted a video that lists recommended wear times based on what gel you are using, ruclips.net/video/N1_1g96zVrs/видео.html
Thank you! I am just wondering - i am 10 days after whitening with opalescence 16% (8 nights but for 11-12h). I can now see that 1/3 of my front teeth are see-through. Did i overuse or will it dissapear with time?
It might be from overuse of the gel. It should go away with time. Have your dentist take a look at it just to be safe.
How much coast you those Trays? Thx
Just finished with my envision liners and have to do this gel. How many times do I use it and can use it per year?
Hi, I usually tell my patients to use the gel for 2 weeks initially. Most are very happy with the results. Some need to whiten for a week or 2 longer. After the initial whitening, using the trays one day a month is enough to maintain the effect for most people. People who drink a lot of coffee, tea, or red wine may need to do it more frequently. I also have a video that discusses whitening times for various strength gels, ruclips.net/video/N1_1g96zVrs/видео.html
How does this method compare to the in-office method with the blue light setting gel? I’m thinking the look of the teeth afterwards and maintenance required.
Hi, studies show that the blue light doesn't do anything, the whitening effect is due to the strength of the whitening gel you use, and the length of time it's on the teeth.
@@VeryNiceSmileDentaloh! It seemed to ‘set’ the gel or something like that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Which method is more permanent (the whiteness stays longer)?
Hi. With in office bleaching using a blue light, your teeth will dehydrate just from your mouth being open for the length of the appointment. The dehydration makes your teeth look whiter, but then they will appear to get darker again in a couple of days as your teeth rehydrate. Whitening from the gel will last longer since it actually whitens your teeth and doesn't dehydrate them. I hope that makes sense.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental ah!! Thank you. I’m having aligners done right now and they seem to be getting yellower.
What about 22% gel is it safe ? My dentist prescribed me this concentration
22% gel is safe. I've used up to 35%. Generally, the higher the concentration, the less wear time.
If you forgot the teeth whitening needle outside the refrigerator for a short time, will it spoil or lose its effect?
It should be fine as long as it's not too old.
I'm using the Philips Zoom! NiteWhite 16%, how often should I use this to get my desired result?
Everyday, every 2 days?
Hi, Phillips recommends wearing for 4 to 6 hours or overnight daily.
Hi, I have 2 old 9.5% hydrogenperoxide gel from my first treatment I did. The gel seems to be sticky.. Can I wear it overnight and drink coffee in the morning? Thank you
Hi, you should be fine. Though if the gel is old it may not be as effective.
Can you use both trays at the same time (top and bottom jaw)? My box says to only use one at a time but no explanation why.
Hi, I use both at the same time.
How many days in row should I do this? I have the 35% gel.
I usually recommend doing it for 2 weeks when you first start. Some people need less time, some need more. It depends on your teeth. Thank you very much for watching.
Is there a diet recommendations to keep results/not damage teeth or I can anything after after overnight use?
If you are worried about staining your teeth, try to stay away from coffee, tea, and red wine. Thanks for watching.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental I’ve heard that you should wait tobrush for half an hour after drinking a carbonated beverage. Should you also wait that long after coffee, tea, and wine?
@@Yowzoe Carbonated beverages tend to be acidic, which can soften your teeth. Waiting a half hour before brushing gives your teeth a chance to remineralize, though I don't know if it's clinically relevant.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental by “clinically relevant”, do you mean you’re not sure it actually makes a substantial difference in the long run as opposed to a nominal difference?
Yes. It's one of those things that's talked about and it make sense but, in reality, it may not make a difference.
I did this with 20% opalescence one time for 3 hours, and my teeth did whiten but it also worsened the spots around my teeth from when I had braces. Is there a fix for that?
I already had the white spots before from when I had braces
Hi, it depends on the severity of the white spots (dentist called that demineralization). Sometimes the whitening will help the spots blend in, sometimes you need bonding to cover up the spots. Have your dentist take a look at the situation, they can give you some treatment options. Thank you very much for watching.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental Thank you so much
Hi doc, I’m from the UK and have been given 6% gel and haven’t seen much results even after 4 weeks and have run out of gel to use. Is there anything else I can do to whiten them?
Hi, what is the active ingredient in the gel you have? Usually for my patients I will either tell them to use it longer or switch them to a stronger gel. What did your dentist suggest?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental hi, it is 6% hydrogen peroxide. I did 4 tubes of it and my dentist gave me another 2 after seeing the results but still there is little to no change
@@imawhiteboard7920hi, how much did your dentist charge for the custom tray? Maybe try looking elsewhere for the whitening gel look at getting a higher strength from online rather than the dentist as more often than not they’ll overcharge if it’s directly from the dentist
I've been using 2 entire siringes of Opalescence 16% PF and havent seen much improvements, i saw that my trays arent really firm and saliva enters it and im afraid thats the issue, should I remake my trays?
Hi, how long do you wear the trays every day? The recommended time for 16% gel is 4 to 6 hours. 2 syringes of gel, used for both top and bottom trays is only 4 to 6 days of wear, it takes longer than that, usually a couple of weeks. Your trays should have a nice tight fit. If saliva can get in easily then the gel can come out easily.
Hello! Thank you for your video, this is very helpful! I am a bit late but I have two questions if you have time time.
Firstly, I’m using 10% gel and using the treys overnight. I got the 10% because my teeth are really sensitive. I have noticed that my teeth are still in a little bit of pain in the morning. Is that just something I have to take until the treatment is over?
Lastly, I have noticed a few white spots around my teeth but no change on the rest after my first application. Is that normal? Did I not spread the gel correctly?
Hi, yes sensitivity is a side effect of whitening. It should go away a day or two after your finish whitening. It's always a good idea to get checked by a dentist to make sure you don't have any cavities before you start whitening. Have your dentist take a look at the white spots just to be safe, but usually they will blend in with the rest of the tooth. We're they noticeable before you started whitening?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental I don’t have cavities but the top of my bottom teeth are a bit worn out because of grinding in my sleep (a very stressful period back in uni) that is where I feel the most pain.
As for the white spots, they were quite noticeable before the whitening but my dentist didn’t say anything about them.
Also thank you for answering the question!
You're welcome! If the white spots were noticeable before the whitening, they will most likely still be noticeable afterwards. Hopefully not as much but you will still see them.

Hi, as long as the gel hasn't separated it should be fine. Keep it in the refrigerator when you're not using it.
Thanks doc,🙏 😊
Hello Doctor,
Thank you for this video, i have a question i cant find a clear answer to..
I understand that after an in office whitening we have to abstain from certain types of food and follow the white diet very strictly for the first 24 to 72 hours.
That being said, when it comes to take-home trays using carbamide peroxide, do we have to be as strict knowing that the treatment lasts for 2 weeks and more.. ?
if yes, is it just for the few hours after taking off the trays or on all time until we finish the treatment ?
Hi, I tell patients to not have coffee or tea or red wine for a few hours after using the trays.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental Hi doctor I’m using home whiting now which is a course of 14 days .. So can I drink coffee after 10 -12 hours using whitieing tray 😊
What kind of whitening gel you suggest to use
I use Opalescence made by Ultradent. I've been using it since the 90's. For my patients I use either 35% for a half hour once a day or 10% overnight, depending on the patient.
I’ve had a question for a while. Is it a bad thing to wear them for long periods of time ? Like overnight or should it strictly be the 30 minutes. Thanks 🙏
I only came back from the dentist today and they said to wear mine for the whole night x 3…
I would imagine it depends on how strong your gel is. I know that can vary.
@@rowanwhile what do you mean x 3?
Hi, as Rowan While mentioned how long you wear the trays depends on the strength of the whitening gel that you are using. The stronger the gel, the less time you wear the trays. I usually offer either 35% Opalescence which you wear for a half hour once a day, or the 10% version which you wear overnight. If people have sensitive teeth I will recommend the 10% version.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental thank you

Because my doctor told me to use this tray all over at night, so ehen i woke up with thristy ,can i drink water?!, the gel will not go inside body with water ?!!
The tooth is thickest at the gum and will look darker in that area. How long have you been using the whitening trays? It takes at least 2 weeks, but it depends on how dark your teeth are when you start. Try not to drink anything when you are wearing the trays. It can dilute the whitening gel.
Also, if you have *gum recession* the bleach gel will not whiten any tooth area where you may have lost your surface-level enamel.
THe opalescence gel I got it's kind of gooey and isn't as liquidy as yours and it's hard for it to come out. Does it have to be stored in a fridge?
It will keep longer if you store it in the fridge. How old is the gel?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental i got in the mail the other day but its not a liquid its kinda gooey
The gel is supposed to be a little thick so that it stays on your teeth. Just use a little drop for each tooth in the whitening tray.
Greetings and tyvm for the helpful info. My dentist told me to put the gel like a lil blob in the center of each 'teeth position' not infront of each one as it spreads once u wear it. Also I do it in the morning and she told me she gave me a stronger one. 6% but I see in the market 10% or 16%. What's the difference? Mine is by Fgm, white class is called with 6%
Hi, what type of gel do you have, hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide?
Hydrogen peroxide, 3 hours per day for 2 weeks. Ty for replying I just hope it's a good brand and worth the money.
6% hydrogen peroxide is equivalent to about 20% carbamide peroxide. I have used a 9.5% hydrogen peroxide gel in the past. It should work for you, it may just take a few more days of using it.
Hey doc! My dentist recommended that I store my supply in my fridge. I’m moving to another country and trying to figure out what the best way is to deal with them now that they’ve been refrigerated. Will removing them from cold storage and subsequently refrigerating them 24 hours later degrade or compromise the chemical integrity or introduce safety issues? Any other gotchas to be aware of regarding the refrigeration method and temperature changes?
Hi, I haven't heard of any issues. If you are worried about it can you travel with the the gel in a cooler?
@@VeryNiceSmileDental LOL no. We are flying and taking trains in Europe it’s gonna be super messy . I assume the refrigeration preserves, but it’s not like we’re dealing with fish whereby we can introduce potentially dangerous chemical reactions. I tried reading up on this and couldn’t find anything on the matter. I also know that certain medications require refrigeration, so I wasn’t sure if somehow refrigeration dictates the necessity to follow a separate protocol. Thank you so much for taking the time to respond!
Gotcha. I don't think you will have a problem. Most whitening gels are not refrigerated during shipping. I store in the a fridge at the office, but at home I just store in my cabinet and I haven't noticed any issues over the years.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental Ok. Thanks so much for this information. Have a great weekend!
It stores longer in the fridge. Shelf life is 1 year room temperature. 2 Years in the fridge I believe.
One issue I’ve run into is that my gums burn like crazy when I’ve used it even when I’ve used the finger wiping technique. I haven’t put all that much in the tray either and yet my gums are screaming at me. Is there a way I can avoid this?
Here are a couple of things you can try. Make sure the trays are trimmed correctly and only cover your teeth. You may still be using too much gel, try using a little bit less. Last resort would be to use a lower strength whitening gel. Thank you very much for watching.
I just got some from my dentist and he recommended only using 2 tiny dots on each tooth.
@@Frogz1620 That will work. Basically, try to use as little gel as possible.
You can put a Vaseline on your gum so it does not burn
Hey doc, I'm using pure smile and whiteness.
My trays are not trimmed. So my gums are covered by the trays. Is it OK or should I see with my dentist? It's my first day using them.
Thank you❤ where can purchase tje kit please
Hi, see your dentist, they can make you a set of custom whitening trays.
Question I have been using 10 percent gel for 2 weeks now but seen hardly any difference. But do you have to dry your teeth etc before putting them on? Maybe I am doing this wrong I where them over night about 7 hours just fyi
Hi, it may take longer when you use the 10% gel since it is the weakest gel. Teeth don't have to be dry when put the trays on them. Don't eat or drink while you are wearing them.
@@VeryNiceSmileDental ok thank you and I don't eat or drink while using them if that helps
Can I use my retainers to do teeth whitening? Also I’m told my teeth whitening tubes expire after a month?
Hi, I usually recommend getting custom whitening trays made in order to keep the gel away from your gums. Majority of the orthodontic retainers I've seen tend to cover the gums somewhat. As the gel expires, it may not work as well. It will still work as long as it doesn't separate.
I got 10% and I use it for a week every night but I don’t see a result. Maybe I don’t put enough of the gel? Any advice?
Hi, you need to give it more time, at least 2 weeks depending on the initial color of your teeth.
