Treating Pneumonia in Goats | Early Intervention is Key!

  • We truly believe that the key to treating any illness in goats is early intervention! We normally take the goat’s temperature rectally first to confirm they are running a fever (a fever is anything above approximately 103*F). But with it being very icy out, and not having anyone to help hold while I took his temperature, we treated as a precaution to suspected pneumonia. Freak Show had stopped eating, was very stuffy nosed, and was not acting himself. We’re pleased to say that less than 24 hours after treatment and he’s back to his old self! We treated with banamine for a fever and the antibiotic Nuflor for pneumonia.

We feed a grain mix made locally here in Nebraska in the middle of the US by Central Plains Milling. It is known as Goat 365, however, we have a slightly altered mixture. Otherwise the get alfalfa hay when they are pregnant and nursing and a native grass hay the rest of the year.
Diarrhea and weight loss could be a handful of other health issues not related directly to the feed.

I can’t remember which particular antibiotic I used in this video, but we use either Nuflor, Draxxin or Baytril to treat pneumonia.

I am so sorry - I JUST found this comment! We didn’t know some comments are randomly “held for review”? 🤔 but to answer your question - nuflor/baytril/Draxxin (the strong antibiotics that work fast) as well as banamine (fever/inflammation reducer) are all prescription from our vet! Unfortunately, we can’t get them at a farm store but they are literal lifesavers to have on hand! 😊
