Scott, Mitch and Kirsten have been friends and singing together since they were in school together in High School in Texas. Later when Scott was in college in California he decided he wanted to compete on the Sing Off, an A Capella singing contest. He called Kirsten (in college in Oklahoma) and Mitch (just finishing High School) and ask them if they would do it with him. They said yes, but then they found out they needed at least five members and Scott's friend, (Ben Bram), told them they needed a bass and a beat boxer to fill out their sound. He suggested Avi, whom he had worked with before as an awesome bass, and they found Kevin (from Kentucky and just graduating pre-med at Yale, on You Tube doing his cello boxing. They called them both and they said yes. They met the day before their audition and put together their arrangement and they said it just felt... right. The rest is history as they say. That was in 2011.
Laurie Pegram very true Mitch is my fave so I gotta love how insane this performance was but that is true every time I hear the beginning part I’m like woahhh Scott and Kirstie are on it their background parts are super necessary to keep the melody in this song
True...but that can be said for every PTX song. The solo is important, but the two harmonizing and doing the background parts are equally as important. Just because everyone is shocked with how amazing Mitch is here doesn't mean they don't understand or appreciate that Scott's & Kirstin's background parts (plus Avi and Kevin's parts) are essential to the song too.
@@benji0099 This song is the best to demonstrate it too since Scott got distracted by Mitch's high note and was slow to start his part right at the end. It's a very small window but we can hear what happens when they aren't totally in sync.
So true!!! It started to infuriate me after watching so many react to this performance. I would argue that their parts are actually the most difficult of this whole thing!
Here's the story I've heard about this performance: The previous song had been a Kevin cello performance, so he was off-stage putting the cello away during the choral intro. During an earlier break, Mitch, who had been suffering from jet lag, drank two Red Bulls backstage. Kevin returned to the stage (unseen on camera) just as Avi hit that low note that caused initial damage to the Star Vista Theater's sound system. As the group starts performing Aha, the camera zooms out for a moment and you can see a slight smile on Kirstie's face, as if she is predicting what's about to happen. At that moment, Mitch's Red Bulls kicked in and he proceeds to go completely insane on stage as Avi continues to joyously shred the sound system in the background. And thus you have the live performance that most Pentaholics refer to as the greatest of PTX's career...all made even more legendary by the fact that it was apparently only captured in this fan video!
Wonderful reaction. I love this performance. I feel that alot of folks can sing high. But it seems forced. Mitch does it, either with ease or makes it seem so. This a yr late so I realize that you already know that the 3 of them went to high school together. If you haven't seen it, the beginners guide to pentatonix is great. Hope and joy to all.
thank you for mentioning Kevin's contribution to this particular performance. It seems way too often that he is overlooked. Maybe it is because the individual who recorded this didn't show him, but there is no way that it can be overlooked.
Kevin may just be my favorite one, and am totally bummed out they didn't even show him!! He does not get enough credit for what he does!! I hate this video!!
TexasRose50 Kevin wasn’t onstage when this song started. The empty spot at the beginning was where he was seated playing his cello in the previous song. As he came back to the stage Mitch and Scott moved over and Kevin joined on the row stage right. By that time the star of the song was Mitch.
Scott, Kirstie and Mitch met when they were 7 or 8 years old. When they went to audition at the sing off they were told a minimum of 5 people. A friend hooked up Avi and Scott saw a RUclips video of Kevin beatboxing while playing Beyoncé his cello. Contacted him he flew out to California and had a two day warmup to audition. The rest is history.
The amount of power Mitch displays at the upper end of his range is phenomenal. Theresa (below) did a nice job recapping their origin; there is no doubt that having these five tremendous talents on stage together (six, really, don't want to leave out Matt) is a little like coming across a herd of unicorns, Kirsti shows off her range on both "Rather Be" ruclips.net/video/OPWPa-HMpj8/видео.html and again on "Where are you Christmas?" ruclips.net/video/emXbfEzXn6A/видео.html, now one of my Christmas favorites along with "Mary, Did you Know?" ruclips.net/video/ifCWN5pJGIE/видео.html and "O Come All Ye Faithful" ruclips.net/video/ifCWN5pJGIE/видео.html. Also check out Superfruit (Scott and Mitch) with Kirsti doing a medley of songs from "Frozen" ruclips.net/video/tA53EsnzlIg/видео.html - be sure to stay for the outtakes at the end.
Any other 80s children who thought this would be Take On Me by Aha? Like, I hadn't heard of them doing that song, but I would watch the heck out of it. Also, Brad: "On the way to 200!"
This is one of my all-time favorites from PTX. So modern and so unusual. You asked how they met? Shockingly, Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie all went to the same high school! That's like unheard of in the annals of music. I've even seen a video of Mitch in his sophomore year singing in a school talent show and then doing a duet with Scott in the same show. Another great reaction by you, of course.
Mitch, Kirstie and Scott have been best friends and singing together since elementary school 💕. Scott brought them together to do sing off. I believe he found Avi and Kevin off uTube right before sing off competition b/c they needed at least 5. Rest is nothing but beautiful perfection.
Love to see you do the Future Friends album by Sup3rfruit Scott and Mitch meet as 10 year olds, Kirstie went to school with them, Scott asked them to do the Sing Off with him (you should definitely react to those in order of performance) Ben Bram introduced them to Avi and the found Kevin cello boxing on RUclips and they all go together a few days before the Sing Off started.
I don't see any Superfruit reactions. Not sure why. If you are willing, Rise on their channel (Scott and Mitch's) has the most amazing harmonies. I would encourage you to react. Talk about chills!!
By the way, opening with "Christus Factus Est" was Avi's idea, as he had extensive choir experience from middle school through college (as well as operatic training), and those of us who've been in choirs know that sacred music is a staple there. And what a great way to lead into Aha! It just isn't the same when it doesn't start out that way. Do they even still perform this, with Matt? I haven't followed PTX since late 2017, so I don't know which older pieces they still do without Avi.
Enjoying your reaction, and nice shirt! 😆 would you check out Pearl Jam - Black, live from MTV Unplugged? Grunge rock, but this is a slow acoustic performance ❤️
Hi Brad, I don't know if you like Blues at all, but could you react to Joe Bonamassa, please? My fave is Django/Mountain Time, from 2009 Live at the Beacon Theater. It is fabulous! Thanks in advance.
Haven't gotten through all your reactions yet but if you haven't done PTX Gold or Superfruit Defying Gravity, do those? Although if you're a fan, you've probably already seen them
Do a reaction vid to Star - There For You. It is really lit and is a dis song for the charactors in the show which is also called Star. Please and Thank You!!!! But only when you have time for it though.
I think you're the only reaction guy out there to point out that (as great as this performance was), they tore pretty badly after Mitch's pause. But, as any good ensemble would, they recovered pretty well!
The talent of this group is amazing

Great a detailed history! Thanks for the comment!
Kevin had played in Carnegie Hall twice; once for PIANO (say what??!) and once for ALTO SAX (such a tremendous talent).
Mitch and Scott have actually known each other since they were 10 and been best friends ever since.😊
I wish this live version was on Spotify.
Mitch does great but it seems like everyone ignores how difficult Scott and Kirsties parts are. If either of them are off they’re all screwed
Laurie Pegram very true Mitch is my fave so I gotta love how insane this performance was but that is true every time I hear the beginning part I’m like woahhh Scott and Kirstie are on it their background parts are super necessary to keep the melody in this song

We need Mitch to drink more Red Bull before shows. He's heavenly on a normal day, but that was just insane.
And THIS is why Pentatonix is The Best.
I'm just catching this and you said almost 200 Subscribers..at this time your just shy of 75,000..You've came a long way this year!

Amazing - reminds me a little of Daemon Irrepit Callidus
And THIS is why Pentatonix is the absolute best.
As soon as Mitch fixes his hair, you know it's fucking ON.

Hit subscribe, I love AHA, especially Mitch on the floor. I literally yanked my earbuds out when he did that
I died a little bit my first time seeing that. My ovaries were screaming.

Yes, a 🎁 to music is what they are!😍
Would you be kind enough to react to gold and daft punk by pentatonix?? Pllleeeeaaaasseeeeee?? They won their first Grammy for daft punk
Mitch, Kirstie and Scott have been best friends and singing together since elementary school 💕. Scott brought them together to do sing off. I believe he found Avi and Kevin off uTube right before sing off competition b/c they needed at least 5. Rest is nothing but beautiful perfection.
you can always tell when ptx did a song based on mitch’s hair
How were they in concert.
I love that you commented on my favourite Kevin moment :D as well as all my favourite Mitch moments of course.
Love to see you do the Future Friends album by Sup3rfruit

Loved your reaction to this vid though.
Scott, Mitch and Kirsty kinda grew up together.... they had a trio in high school.
Rather be is lower than shallow. Worth listening to.

Scott has said that sometimes he stops to appreciate Mitch's singing and forgets to start his own part when the time comes.
@@mmg8823 It's sad that we can't really see Scott much in this since it looks like he was checking out Mitch's dancing too
