I just checked and this was recorded 6 days before his death. This song was scheduled to be released the day after his passing.
Sad... but what ahhh great guy
tragic ...
I REMEMBER HEARING JIM BADASS. STILL LISTENING 50 YRS LATER AND i'm kearning guitar Thanks jim
He was amazing and I miss him
And the headlines claim there was dope on that plane.
The world could really use two beautiful souls like Jim and Maury right now. They may be gone, but never forgotten.
Rip Jim and Maury, thankyou very much!
I’m a guitar player and Maury’s accompaniment is just pure genius.

Just when Jim Croce is finally making it in the music scene and at a blink of an eye He's gone.
Similar to Duane Allman of Allman Brothers
Oh man did I love and still love this Jim Croce song, it takes me back to 1972 or 73 sitting in my parents kitchen age 16 or 17, talking to my father about the Marquette Warriors basketball team, sad to say daddy would die in three years of a heart attack, I was the oldest of us five kids that still lived at home the five older than me had left the nest through marriage, the sister right above me was in college in northern Wisconsin and one brother coming home from serving in Nam, man do I miss those days.
I know right what you mean! So many family memories popped into my own head while reading your comment..Thank you!
Did you ever think for one moment, your whole world was gonna change when your father passed away?
Very nice story. Thanks for sharing. I taught HS in Philly with a guy who played with Croce while in college. Said he was a terrific guy. So sad.
I love Jim Croce. My mom liked him a lot. His music reminds me of being a kid riding with her in her 1975 Cutlass Supreme listening to a Jim Croce 8 track tape and singing as rolled on down the road.
Me too! I remember riding in the car with my parents and this song was playing on the radio. 😊
Couldn’t have said it any better … I used to cruise in my mom’s Cutlass and listen
Good times
Good memories
my aunt's car had a huge hole in the floor in the back of the station wagon... 10 of us in the back... growing up in the 70s!
Being on the Midnight Special days before his death and before the official release of this 3:06 memorable ballad. I can remember when this song hit the airwaves. Truly special to have this in the Midnight Special archives.
Thank you for memorializing the great Jim Croce.
Beautiful. Back when musicians had talent and could deliver a real live performance.
How much talent was lost when the life of Jim Croce ended in this inexplicable way, this simple and humble man as shown by his final smile, when he finished performing this great song that has remained for posterity. Thank you Midnight Special for giving us this memory that I think must be the only one recorded so soon after the death of this great American folk rock music
Jim Croce an American icon, a singer, songwriter, guitar player, an absolute master at his craft.
RIP Jim Croce & Maury Muehleisen
🕯🕯🕯.
Yes; and Thomas Picardo Jr. (🎹)
(August 17, 1942 - May 2, 2021),
known professionally as Tommy West, was an American record producer, and singer-songwriter.
Occasionally, producer Tommy West would join them onstage, typically on the TV appearances, playing the piano.
@@SkiASE I have seen him playing piano with Jim, didn't know anything about him, thank you. I started playing guitar in the early 1990's, I had several influences one being Jim Croce and the second David Gilmore. Now thirty plus years on I am still playing Jim's songs to my wife and family, he had such a talent for composing music, he knew how to draw listeners into his songs. It was so sad that Jim didn't truly see the success he deserved, oh near his death he began seeing the fruits of his labor, but if he lived he would've been spoken about along with the greats of his time. His wife had a rough go at it after he passed, she had to raise their child alone and the record company kept all of the profits from Jim's music leaving her with no money to live on, I believe she had to wait tables to survive at that time. It took decades for her to finally win and get her husbands music rights back, what an absolute shame what our music industry has become.
Absolutely brilliant. I never get tired of this song., or of Jim and his music. After more than 50 years, this is still magnificent.
One of my very favorite performers! I was devastated when I heard the news of his passing. We all suffered a great loss that September day in 1973, such a personable man overflowing with talent who had a destiny none of us were prepared for. He continues to live on in media and in our hearts, RIP Jim.
so many greats lost to planes.
@@anton2417Sad but true.
@@anton2417 and Helicopters 🚁
I saw him shortly before he died in Nashville when he opened on a bill that included the (original lineup) Doobie Brothers and Loggins and Messina. THOSE were the days.
Wow. Amazing. Wish I could've seen him but I wasn't born yet
Such a haunting video. 6 days before his plane crashed. His song Bad Bad Leroy Brown was constantly played on Top 40 radio that summer.
I was 10 years old that summer. I remember it well, and 'Big Bad Leroy Brown', too, which was also in heavy rotation on many southern Ontario radio stations. "Operator" and "I Got a Name" were other favourites. I was saddened by the news of the plane crash and his death. He was one of my favourite musical artists at that time in my life, and still is today.
I often wonder what he would have gone on to become if he hadn't died.
It's crazy how much you can miss a man you never knew, who passed decades before you were born. There's just something you can't explain with Jim Croce, a simple man, a loving man, a talented musician, but mostly, a pure soul.
September 1973 was a cruel month. Just one day before Jim and Maury died, Gram Parsons was taken from us. Tough month.
R.I.P Maury & Jim , you fellas were some of the sound track of my youth !
Aww, Jim was so special! What a great song for the ages! 🤩💜
Who DOESN'T like this? No one. No one who matters.
All of the American Idol contestants should watch these videos! So inspiring.
One of my earliest musically influences....my Buddy Holly so to speak. What a great song writer and musician
This man is wiping tears from his eyes...every time i hear this song 😢
TMS should have included Jim receiving the gold record from Burt in that clip 👍. Then again, they could put it at the beginning of "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" if they upload that one.
Thank you for sharing the information. 😊
how beautiful. Pure music without dancers, flashing lights, and smoke. Thi is what music used to be like in the 70s.
Sheer talent and dedication, too, and absolutely no auto-tune.
I am 54 yrs old. Half his songs still make me bawl like a baby
56 and..umm.. Yeah..

Legit dude
This song came on when I was a teenager at odds with my parents. They didn't believe in me. I had to believe in myself. It gave me strength to push ahead and be true to myself. I made it.
Listen to him for over 50 years now...never bored..he doesn't get "old"..genuine, pure, some innocence.
.. from..tom, munich Germany
And I am 79 years old. Saw them perform at the Hampton Beach Casino in NH and it was magical. It feels like yesterda6.
It wasn’t just Jim. It was Maury too!! 51 years. What a masterpiece they left with this.
this is my dad's music.... I miss him
It's all of ours now thanks to Jim. Music lives on.
Your dad would be proud ❤🥲
Amazing sound and one of the most beautiful songs ever done, and I miss Jim, he was a great man!!!
One of the best scenes of Django Unchained…
Don't forget the opening credits of "Invincible" (Jim being born in South Philadelphia and raised in nearby Upper Darby; him and Tina Fey being the two most well-known alumni of Upper Darby High School).
So beautiful and moving, I loved Jims voice and stories with lyrics, he made us “think”. What a great band he had to back him up, I’ve got a dream, too.
Beautiful 🌹
I can't help but wonder how much more music could have been made had he not left this earth so young.
No, thank you very much! I'm so thankful for the music I was given by you!
Happy Thursday... thank you for sharing! 💖
Same here. In '73 I was 13, still listening to AM not FM radio, so his was the first tragic death of a popular musician to really hit me hard. He had the world at his feet, and with a young family to support ... so cruel.
They would have made several more appearances on TMS, I bet had that incident not occurred.
Just like you.
Jim was a genuine talent in his day. He left us with some really great music before dying in a plane crash at the young age of 40. Had he lived he would have been a superstar
He was only 30
Jim was only 30 when he died. His back up guitar player, Maury was only 24.
I hate this music and love it at the same time . I love this beautiful sound but hate that these times are gone and never will come back !
I hear that man. I wish I could give ya a hug and say it'll still be ok🙏
The day Jim died, a legend was born.
This talent was taken far too early. Rest in peace knowing your songs are still enjoyed today.
I still remember hearing it on the news, the day he died. So tragic.
This man is the reason picked up a guitar. The very first song I learned to play was Leroy Brown.
You were one of Best's.
He’s resting in peace, while his music lives without mortality. Beautiful…
Timeless master piece so sad he never heard it on the radio
0:56 Showing Jim from his shadowed side is almost eerie.
RIP Jim Croce & Maury Muehleisen I remember the first time I heard you on the radio. And I remember when I herd the news of your passing
Jim Croce is still my favorite singer/songwriter of all time! RIP Jim and Maury! ❤❤❤
The ironic thing is you said he's your favourite singer/songwriter of all time on a video of a song that he didn't actually write.
Still a classic ❤
Jim greats❗️🌟🎸👍👏👏👏
Jim's music had a profound impact on my life as a teenager in the 70's. Still does to this day!!
Greatness
Just a beautiful musician. Incredible guitar player. You are missed Jim.
I love jim croce. He was from Coatesville pa. I lived there 3 years..
Actually he was from Upper Darby (right outside of West Philadelphia). He was the initial inductee of the Upper Darby High School Wall of Fame and his widow supported the school's Performing Arts Center. Jim lived in Frazer (east of Downingtown) as an adult and is buried in the Jewish cemetery there.
Great singer, musician and songwriter❤
I guess that's the point. For as long as you are remembered you never really die! For Jim's fan's he will always be there with us!
Masterpiece!
I was not even born when they were singing this song, but its a beatoful song , plenty of nostalgy it reminds me the 1970's a little later after their plane crash I was born
51 Years ago :-( Left the world with some of the best music ever written. Thanks again for the music Jim.
My dad always loved him. As do I. What a talent
I'm 59 and still love Jim's music - it moves me to tears and joy!
My father died just over a month ago, and this makes me think of him. He loved Jim Croce, and he’s the only reason I’ve ever heard his music.
I'm sorry for your loss 🙏
Seems like yesterday when his music was born. It will never die...
If you listen to the rift carefully you could hear where Stone Temple pilots borrowed that riff for their big hit. 😊
Robert DeLeo says it was his tribute to Jim
@@jeffkahl Oh did he . I did not know that . The first time I ever heard that STP song I was thinking to myself man it sounds like that crochet song how cool . Those DeLeo Brothers could really jam . And they had probably one of the greatest frontman singers who ever lived. Rip Scott weiland and Jim Croce . Can you imagine if Jim lived how many more hits you would have had because the guy was like a hit machine and he was just getting started. How tragic. 😮
@@chriskroll4166Which STP “big hit” song was it?
I love the YT vid of them playing/singing with Glen Campbell on the “Wichita Lineman” song, my favorite of his. Glen was teary eyed at the end.
@@KittyGrizGriz the song is called interstate love song . 🙋
Tragic Loss Beautiful Soul
Timeless !
My Mother played Jim when I was a little kid in the mid 70's. What an amazing group. It takes me back to seeing my mother in a bandanna working in her garden.
Their music makes me feel emotional and so sad for the loss of those that day. Maury and Jim were so young.
Love this song. Great vibes.
This a musical trip down memory lane. Midnight Special played a part of most of the teenagers musical memories and good times. We could stay up and enjoy our musical groups and enjoy our style of music 🎶 🎵.
In my top 10 back then, still is 50 years later...
This song is so life affirming, so affective, and so majestic with its simple but profound lyrics and warm acoustic chords- I’m in tears listening.
Butiful song. I'm playing this música lon Time a go.
Breaking them generational curses. One of my favorite voices too.💫💞
Jim Transcended Time with his Music. The truth, goodness & beauty of his voice, energy & songs uplift me.
Beautiful live rendition of I've got a Name. It is so sad to know that 6 days later, Jim Croce would die in a plane crash. He was a star on the rise, and the world was deprived of some great music, I'm sure.❤
A shining star in a sometimes dark world. A generation talent. Taken far too soon. RIP Jim Croce. And to Maury too, of course. You're not forgotten!
Yess! This was the last hit song he wrote. What beautiful song.We still love you Jim !
This was one of the very few songs on his last 3 albums that Jim didn't write. The other one was "Salon and Saloon" also on the "I Got a Name" Album. It was written my his back up guitarist Maury.
He didn’t write it
If you ever kids, pls give them some beautiful memories of childhood and family they can aways look back and draw strength from.
I know life can be messy and tough, and sometimes we may be too wrapped up with responsibilities and bills that we'd forget to give them these beautiful simple memories they will cherish when they get older especially when life gets tough but hey do it for them. It's what gets me going sometimes. Remembering my brother, my sister, my dad and my mom (God rest her soul) just reminds me of who i am and where im coming from. ❤
There's nothing like family❤
I wish you well❤
I was at Ft Gordon Ga. During this episode. I found out 3 weeks later that Jim was no longer with us.
Jim Croce's just standing there telling a story, Making a timeless impact. Because it's always about the soul of the song snd the delivery of it. Croce. Badass.
Bless his son for carrying on the legend!!
A great song Jim Croce has a strong beautiful voice great song writer great guitar player love you Jim Croce RIP 😎🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🌹🌹❤️❤️🏋️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🎸🎸🌹
Happy New Year 2025 🎉
I'm 66 cried the day he died. I was inspired by Maury later became a session player in Nashville. ❤
How tragic. He died only 6 days after this aired.
How is Jim not in the R&R Hall of Fame?
Good question
Because it's run by Idiots. Why do people asking that question?
Because it is run by Idiots. That is why.
never
It's a stupid question
A Jim and AJ duet with this song would have been iconic....
Forever Croce and his band!!!
It just hurts that these real musicians are gone and there will never be anything like this again . I miss the sixtys and seventies. I want to go back, it was so simple
This song reminds me of a love in my teenage years, it's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all.
Friday morning Sept 21 , 1973 . I heard in the radio that Jim Croce had died in a plane crash the night before . I had planned that morning to ask a girl in high school I was crazy about to go steady with me . She had been crazy about me too but thought I was not as interested in her as I really was ( we were just 16 so stuff like that happens at that age .) When I asked her to go steady with me she was really surprised and couldn’t say yes to me cuz the day before she had gone steady with another guy the day before .
I was heartbroken beyond belief because I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her .
This song always reminds me of that time because it was released that same day .
This episode aired exactly a week before on Friday night Sept 14.
She married that guy and he treated her like shit . I married years later and I’ve been with my wife for 45 years now. I know I could’ve loved this going lady the past 50 years too .
It’s amazing how little decisions we make when we are young and naive can affect us all our lives .
movin me down the highway - great line.
A true artist if he were lived maybe he will be great as Sprinting.
I remember the day …. I was driving and heard the sad news on the radio from WABC New York. Never forget that day.
Like the fool I am and will always be!.
I'm only 40. I found this marvelous song from the movie Django Unchained lol
"moving down the highway, so life won't pass me by" ~the irony
if he'd taken the highway instead.
Resurrection is real - i don't think we've seen the last of Jim
So great to see this near perfect live performance. As a guitarist, it’s interesting to see how Jim & Maury set it up, with the latter capoed on the 2nd fret.
The song became a hit after Croce died only days later, so I always assumed there was no live footage of this song. Just great.
..brilliant..
Poignant ❤
wonderful!
Breathtaking👍
LOVE the song... super-sad there was no bassplayer (that line kicks so much ass...)
