MATT MAIOCCO -- 1) Thank you for the insight on DT Javon Hargrave's contract. The 49ers should draft a DT early in 2025. 2) On the other hand, I think you are kidding yourself about WR Ricky Pearsall. He is likely to be BEHIND WR Jacob Cowing in learning the offense. 3) Both CB Charvarius Ward and CB Renardo Green struggled vs. the Rams in the 4th quarter. S Malik Mustapha lunged too early at Rams RB Kyren Williams, allowing an easy rushing TD.

A breath of fresh air. Saying it like it is, and it's been hell finding someone to do that. I've been relying on David Lombardi for truthful input, and up to now, his input has been the only reliable source on the web. That said, I have to admit, Matt gets right to the point without pointing out a sideshow of trivial travel facts when he reports from different locations. Bottom line, I would rather hear the hard truth, even though it hurts. It doesn't put a lot of false hope into each game and then have us all wonder WTF happened. Thank you for your frankness; Matt. I look forward to hearing more from you as the season rolls out.

That's just Kyle being stubborn. If we needed Cowing to play 40-50 snaps a game like a starting wideout then okay. I could see the logic that he's not ready for that kind of workload.
But there is no way you can convince me he can't play a limited role with 15-20 snaps a game right now.
For all we know, Cowings may be struggling with the playbook. It happens. Remember, he has to learn all three receiver positions in order to play.

I know Shanahan defended Ronnie Bell saying he had a great camp, but most reports seemed to say Conley looked even better right? I’m surprised he didn’t play more in the last game.
As they say "there are those that are All-Pro practice players but no show game-time players" . . . I think we know what Bell is.

The season is over folks....the 49ers will struggle to even make the wildcard this year.
Easy there Hoss! 9ers will make the playoffs! Heck almost half the teams do now. The issue isn’t making the playoffs, it’s how much they will have left in the tank once they do. That’s why early wins are important. It helps to go on cruise control later and catch your breath. Same reason why the #1 seed is such a huge advantage. You get to watch half the teams go home while the other half is taking a beating. Now are we Super Bowl favorites still? At this point it’s safe to say no. But we are definitely still going to the post season!

@@dgoodman1484 They're not getting the #1 seed or a WC. This season isn't just the "usual" challenges. The first issue is simply the collective age of the roster. The core group is aging out. And before you say how preposterous that sounds the wear and tear of many deep runs into the playoffs takes a toll. An even great toll is the emotional fortitude to bounce back after losing 2 SBs to the same team/coach/qb. You're seeing that toll already in full force.
THE ONLY WAY SF OVERCOMES THIS IS PLAYING YOUNG PLAYERS . . .which we know Kyle refuses to do.

I’ve never understood why the 49ers don’t throw the ball to Deebo more out of the backfield. Seems like it would be a good way to get him more mismatches and to replace what we’re missing in the absence of CMC. With Jauan’s emergence as a legit WR2, it seems like lining up Deebo in the backfield more often would be beneficial, but hopefully without running him up the middle too often.
Yeah like 4 or 5 yards upfield instead of 3 yards back so he gets blasted Kyle might kill someone one day
Niners have struggled since DJ Jones left and K'waun left at Nickel. He blitzed played the run, good cover guy. He was a stud
Lynch drafts Safeties who are clones of himself; physical bangers great vs the run but useless in pass coverage.
Why is Brian Schneider still on staff? He was creative & dominant in Seattle but zero evidence of either here in SF.
Matt, why don't we do trick plays on special teams? Schneider had great success with them in Seattle, and we saw Wishnowsky has elite wheels on the play he called his own number. Is this Kyle or Schneider?

Let Hargrave walk, he isn't worth the investment. Hate to see him get hurt, wish him a speedy recovery. Love your insight, Matt, but you didn't talk about Special Teams, which has been an issue the past two weeks.
You need to listen to what I had to say after the game. I've spoken plenty about special teams since Sunday's game.
"In the estimation of Kyle Shanahan..." Someone needs to take over all personnel decisions from Kyle. This is the guy that had JJ as the third receiver, Jordan Mason as the third RB and Purdy as the third QB. Kyle hasn't proven he has any ability to identify the readiness or quality of a player. These dudes are solid11's or 2's and they weren't getting a sniff until injuries forced them on the field, then... Wow! KS unwillingness to test young talent on the field while putting subpar talent on the field over them is starting to cost games. Great coaches develop and challenge players and create competitive environments to improve everyone. KS is not a great coach.

It's way too early for me to say there's a DC problem. Are the 49ers asking their players to do anything crazy? I don't think so. It's about executing the play calls.

With Christian McCaffrey nowhere to be seen soon it seems, the 49ers are really lacking that receiving ability out of the backfield. What do you see short term as the best option to fill that void?
Hargrave was a MAJOR disappointment. Was not impactful since joining the 49ers. He dug his own grave.

Grave has been solid but not elite. He's definitely overpaid. Should've kept Armstead & traded Grave.

I think it's fair to say that it was pretty obvious that it was not working. Too many others got involved in the defense last season, including the GM, who devised one strategic plan on the day of a game.
I think the bigger issue is that KS doesn’t take responsibility for anything that goes wrong, he always places the blame on others, and there seems to be no one to be his check and balances
@@michealfields0017 You can throw stats all you want . . . the eye-test showed that the defense wasn't performing to par. Stats alone don't tell the entire story.

Of course not. The guys most responsible are the guys who have gotten beaten in coverage.

How did we get from the “deepest DB room” in recent memory, to now a potential weakness?? Did Shanahan’s arrogance get the best of him again, thinking a first year Def. Coordinator can carry you through a SB? Even Saleh took a couple of years!!
I think coaching, and scheme have something to with it as well. I am hopeful the coaching staff will sort this out quickly. I don't know if Kyle will ever play rookies in a meaningful way at skill positions on offense. That's just not his style. I would like to see more of the bench get playing time, to rest starters and prevent injuries.
I think the 49ers should look at Mustafa to play nickel linebacker.

Maybe you can provide some insight on a question that bothers me. The Niners have 3 new offensive weapons that have legitimate 4.3 speed. Now maybe they don’t know the entire playbook but a few plays designed to take advantage of that speed. If they only ran a go route every time they were on the field someone has to account for him. Andy finds ways to take advantage of that unique talent Kyle does not

What really hurt about Hargrave was the four players they gave up to get him. That hurt the defense, especially the run defense.
Well my EYES see a defense getting gashed by the run and getting burnt over the top. Everyone kept saying Wilks was an outsider and not one of KS’s guys. Well NS is a Kyle guy and the defense is now at the bottom of the league.
Well, they rank 16th, but I get your point. :)
49ers are just the Cowboys West. They live off the past. Haven't been to the super bowl since 2pac passed.

I speak "layperson." On Bosa, the interesting thing is that he played every snap of defense.
But that just means he is a warrior, just not 100% healthy.
If Deebo is back soon, he will be in the backfield a bit more often to get Jennings out there more and take some load off Mason
My question is if Cowing is not ready. Does that insinuate Pearsall is going to have a harder time playing considering he's practiced a lot less than Cowing.
Based on what I observed from Pearsall in the offseason program and training camp, he seemed to be far ahead of most rookies I've seen through the years.

Kyle Shanahan always has expectations for receivers that exceed what other coaches are looking for. Receivers will pay when he is ready or them to play. That goes for Cowing and Piersall.
Maybe bench Brendal, Campbell and Bell. I like Campbell but he's not a cover guy. I have a feeling stuff will turn around, maybe a wild card and not division winner. Cards and Hawks are better now
I hate how Kyle never plays his rookies unless he absolutely have to. I'm looking around the league and everyone is playing their rookies getting them live reps and experience. Why does Kyle have to be such a hard head control freak? I was thinking maybe Cowing is in the Shanahan doghouse, but now I'm thinking, maybe he doesn't want to play Cowing cause if he balls out and shows he's a good receiver, then Shanahan would have problems in the line up once Deebo returns and Pearsall becomes eligible but then he has to keep Aiyuk in field to justify paying him 30M.
The goal is always to play the guys who are best right now. They are not building for the future. They are trying to win games right now.

The 49ers are being coached right. Brock Purdy yardage and QBR is really good. The defense and Special teams are not being placed right. They need to add in the back ups who are very hungry and very good...Where is Renardo Green? Where is Isaac Guerendo? Where is Tatum Bethume? Ronnie Bell is not good. Where is Jacob Cowing? Where is Chris Connely?????Where???? Where is Drake Nugent? Where is Danny White? What is going on Aiyuk? He gets payed and low production as usual. This happens when players get paid....like Tua.....Trevor.....Jordan Love........Nick.....I thought that The 49ers were going to come out with this high power Offense and kick ass defense....and the 49ers are just flat!!!! Green is too handsy,rock ya sin is good in coverage but too small in run defense, luter needs reps . Coaches have got to get these safeties helping where needed. They are the weakness. And yes campbell not good in coverage. Better in run defense.
Give Curtis Robinson the snaps until Winters returns. Campbell can't cover. Offenses will continue to expose Campbell.
Completely agree with you, Matt! Was watching the all-22 and Campbell performance last week was incredibly discouraging. Very slow and McVay was going after him (and Yiadom, as you mentioned).
I also felt like Ja'yir Brown was struggling a good bit in coverage.

Not concerned about the offense and it will improve when Deebo, Kittle and Pearsall are back. CMC status still unknown. Aiyuk should also get better based on last year. Trent Williams will improve and Feliciano should be back later. The defense and special teams are the biggest worry and they don't seem to have improved at all.
Stated 10-7 @ start of season and Aiyuk STILL sucks.
Maiocco and Pappa are really the only ones that keep it real when it comes to journalist for the 49ers.

As for the 49ers, I was in the camp that thought we really needed to pay/keep BA. I'll own up and say I think I was wrong, not because BA looks less than average, but because Jennings clearly can play at a high level and the money could have been used on d-line depth
