  • RFK Jr. Confirmation Hearing: Bernie Sanders questions Robert Kennedy Jr. on vaccines, climate change, abortion and messaging on a onesie.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s confirmation hearings began Wednesday before the Senate Finance Committee. He appears before the Health, Education, Labor and Pension committee on Thursday.
“Are you supportive of these onesies?” Sen. Bernie Sanders sternly asked Kennedy.
It was a moment that drew a bit of laughter during an otherwise tense series of questions from Sanders, an independent from Vermont.
Sanders was pressing Kennedy on his evolving stances on childhood vaccines and a onesie the Children’s Health Defense, a group Kennedy chaired from 2015 and 2023, was selling for $26 and printed with anti-vaccine slogans.
Kennedy pointed out that he’s since resigned from the organization’s board in December and said he supports vaccines. (AP)

That means we *have to* force people to be doctors and nurses. How else will someone have the right to get guaranteed healthcare unless others are *forced* to give it to them? Maybe some people don't want to be doctors in countries that pay way less (which by the way are all of those European countries, and Canadian), all the best doctors come to America because it's an open market and the pay is far greater for the life of sacrifice they've committed to. It does NOT mean people have to get forced to work in healthcare. It's crazy how that is your conclusion, and I sincerely hope you read up on health care as a human right and how so many other countries have decided this to be the case and how that turned out.
If all the best doctors came to the US, your healthcare wouldn't be ranked outside the top 10.

I actually like BOTH RFK Jr. and Bernie Sanders. I think they're two honest and intelligent men with some reasonable disagreements. The biggest one, is around "Is health care a human right?". RFK Jr.'s response was a good one. Which is, "the right of free speech" doesn't cost anyone a dime. It's an easy thing to think of as "a human right". But thinking of health care as "a human right" means "Someone needs to fund all the salaries of doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical technicians, pharmacists, medical equipment sellers (not to mention the equipment itself), etc., to treat this person, FOR FREE, forever, regardless of how terrible they treat their own health, and that person has no financial responsibility whatsoever." If I could wave a magical wand, and make a magical money tree provide that service to all Americans on those terms, I would, because I don't want anyone to suffer more than they have to. But the problem, is there is no magical money tree. So to provide that level of funding, requires taking more tax money from the rest of us. A reasonable middleground I've heard proposed, is capping annual out-of-pocket expenses for all necessary medical procedures, therapies, and prescriptions for Americans, at 5K for households making less than 100K a year, and 10K for families making more than 100K a year. That's a non-life-destroying amount of money, but it's still enough to offset a massive tax hike, and enough to motivate people to TRY to take care of themselves. I wish the right and left would work together on SANE, middle of the road concepts like that, regarding "healthcare as a human right".

The US is the only "developed" country that doesn't have some form of universal healthcare. And universal healthcare doesn't necessarily mean free (although ideally it would be). It means everyone has health coverage, either through universal government-provided healthcare or through universal health insurance (public or private). Everyone having access to healthcare is a crucial milestone of development in a country, and frankly the US not having it means it isn't really a developed country at all. The Affordable Care Act helped the US catch up a little, but it's still very far behind.
If you want an example of a healthcare system that is very high quality and universal, look at Japan. They have universal mandatory health insurance, the government regulates drug prices and they have some of the best healthcare in the world.
