Hi, I'm new to MHW. How can he manage to reach the face of the Velkhana at the start of the video? I see that he's using some sort of whip and i was wondering how could i get that too.

The whip at 0:27 is called Clutch Claw. It's a feature introduced in Iceborne expansion, so you'll need at least that To use clutch claw,
on PS4, hold L2 and press Circle. on xbox, hold LT and press B.
The entire weapon list is split into two categories for clutch claw. Light and Heavy. Light weapons, like longsword and light bowgun, take two clutch claw hits to tenderize monster part and make it weaker. But they drop slinger ammo on first hit. Heavy weapons, like Charge Blade and Heavy Bowgun tenderize in one hit.
But, if you climb monster's face like in 0:27, you can press R2 and shoot out all of your slinger ammo (redpit etc), and force monster into a wall.
Look up clutch claw tutorials for more info.
