Hi! What a great story. Downsizing is difficult. I know that Jean gifted you that e spinner because she wanted it to have a good home. Thank you for sharing that story and your space. Keep on teaching and sharing your skills. (Taffy)
Thank you Roxanne. I too, have learnt so much from you and appreciate your generosity in sharing. That woman is safe in the knowledge that you will care for and, look after, the items she passed on to you. What a perfect sharing of resources. I’m so glad for you. I wish you much fun and productivity.
I think the new sweater is gorgeous! And FINE! I appreciate seeing your progress and techniques - using stockinette to eliminate the blips work beautifully. I’m glad to have the reminder of your other vid on the subject. How wonderful to receive that fabulous gift/bargain! You deserve it for all you give to all of us. Thanks for the studio tour! I think you are well organized and have a LOT going on!
What a over the top gift! Your office is so useful. Have you thought of putting your spinning wheel in another room? I always love seeing a wheel in someone’s home, such a homey touch. Thanks again!
I bet your dream craft room would be amazing! My mother in law gifted me a sewing machine years ago, and I snagged a serger off FB. My mother in law just upgraded her embroidery machine and is gifting her old one to me, have to find a way to get it from Ohio to Alaska, but still exciting. We have a guest room that most of the craft room items are stored in, but it doesn’t have room for a desk so we can actually use it as a craft room.
What a fantastic gift! I've not used my wheel since I got an espinner 5 years ago. I have space for the wheel, and I actually view it as a piece of sculpture, so I'm in no rush to get rid of it. But espinners are just so much easier to manage.
Thank you for sharing your work space. It is always hard to come up with a good way to organize the space you have into a good area for work flow and storage Thanks for all your tips I always learn something helpful I recently obtained an e-spinner and learning
Thanks for the studio tour. It looks like a very functional space. I loved your vintage art print so much, I had to find one for my own craft room. Congratulations on the E-spinner! What a wonderful arrangement.
IKEA to the rescue! I have many of the same things in my craft room, like that folding cutting table, and I also store my yarn in those kallax cubbies. Now that I’ve seen you do that too I feel super legit, haha. Your reaction to your sweater just kills me. “It’s fine…it’ll be fine. It’s fine.” I think we can all relate to that! 😂
Oh, I just so loved to see your tour of the studio. II was a little sad to see your treddle spinner packed away in a corner. But I've just been watching two knit-podcast millenials move from small e-spinners to full treddles in their spinning journeys--so it is all a beautiful process.
I'm just happy that I can make room (mentally and physically) to be able to switch amongst the different crafts during the course of a day. Previously, it was an either/or proposition!
Congrats on acquiring your “new” used Hansen e-spinner, Rox! You’re gonna love it! I have one, too, and the first accessory I got for it was a Woolee Winder (it automatically distributes your spun yarn along the bobbin so that you don’t have to manually do it. Best thing next to sliced bread! Have fun with your new toy!
Your hand spun and dyed yarn is beautiful, and your sweater is looking real good. A suggestion for a future technique video: double pick-up for a button band. ❤❤❤
What an exciting time you have had, I am so pleased that you are having such a wonderful time with your e- spinner, you are going to be churning out the yarn now. Go you good thing. Your Sweater looks fantastic and the colors are brilliant. Thank you for your visit today, catch up with you next time.
well now you’ve done it! I have been wanting to get an e-spinner and seeing yours made me want one even more! I will have to look for a second hand one. What a great deal you got.
When you mentioned the double pickup in a previous episode I envisioned picking up in the usual way but with a yarnover between each stitch, then work double knitting for a few rows (K1, sl1 wyif). It would save having to pick up the purl bumps (and fewer ends to weave in?).
I played with a few different variations on the method to see how the results compared, as well as to avoid so many ends. There are quite a few approaches! I did try the YO method, but using two circs (which is a method from Rebecca magazine that I tried maybe 15 years ago). It was a lot clumsier and less neat than picking up the purl bumps, so I didn't use it. I ended up knitting in the round, in order to avoid the excessive yarn tails, but it's possible that double knitting on one needle would have made that PU method tidier. An experiment for the future! ETA: as I think about it, it might not work well in this application, which requires k3 at the start and end for the k2p2 ribbing (it would require k2 at the start and end for k1p1). Still something to thinking about!
@@RoxanneRichardson using two circulars would definitely be clumsy. I played around with knitting a Mobius cowl a few months ago. Knitting that first round with the other end of the stitches being held by the cord (no matter how flexible) was not my kind of fun. I can think of several ways to do this. Might be fun to play around with it.
Thanks for showing us your studio in this episode! I’ve always been curious about how other knitters store their yarn and if the yarn is not kept in airtight containers, are precautions taken to prevent moths? Have you ever had an issue with pests or moths in your yarn? I live in Southern California which I’m guessing is probably a very different type of climate from where you live.
This room is very bright and I'm in it all day. Moths like dark quiet locations, so I'm not any more worried about moths in this room than I am about moths in an LYS.
What a fabulous, generous gift from Jean! And I’ll bet she’s tickled to see you using her e-spinner on your videos. Your nifty studio updates are impressive. Gotta make it work for YOU. I like your x-shaped dividers that look like a yarn shop. But I’m curious that you store your wool yarns in open shelves. I’ve leaned from sad experience to store all my wools in moth-proof containers. But I’m in Maryland. Maybe you don’t have wool moths in Minnesota?!
Moths like dark, quiet places to lay their eggs. I don't think they'd care much for this brightly-lit room, where I'm located 14 hours a day making noise with my various machines, or streaming video! I'd be more worried if it was stored on shelves in a closet down the hall. The only critter issue I've ever had was a mouse.
Ah. Hadn’t thought of it that way. Makes sense. And so you can enjoy the lovely colors and textures of your stash, and be less likely to forget what you have…😋
Never been interested in spinning but seeing the e-spinner makes me think about it! That could work for me. I’ve thought about getting a cover stitch machine when I used to sew more. I figured I wasn’t going to make a lot of t-shirts though so I held off.
Great episode! Toldja you shd get the Pro. So happy that Jean was able to make it happen for you. Space re-org is fabulous. I can see why you're pleased with the sewing corner-- it's perfect. And so smart to put the over stitch and the serger on the same surface. Sweater stripes are lovely. I hate to agree, but i see what you mean about the fit. I am sure you are right about it being just fine, and when we see it finished and you wearing it over a turtle or some such next winter, we will be charmed once again. I am on pins & needles re: neckline. Can't wait to see what you decide. Once again, i learn so much from you. Thanks ever so!
It's a relatively small fit issue that won't likely affect my willingness to wear it. For nearly any other sweater, I could have avoided the top down construction, and probably avoided the gauge and fit issue. As my spinning improves, I can hopefully resolve that aspect of the challenge!
It really looks beautiful and i am sure there will be no problem. Everything you knit is pretty flawless, this being no exception. So impressed with your 'dye job!' The stripes are just glorious.
I’m so happy you were able to get such a bargain on the top of line e-spinner. On the sweater, every time you said “it’s fine”, I just grinned. I think it will keep bugging you. Will it be possible to redo the sleeves without redoing the entire sweater? I didn’t follow your construction enough to know. I don’t think you’ll be truly happy until the sleeves are smaller.
What a great a deserved gift! I am curious about the e-spinner. My fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be. I really do want to learn to spin, and have thought an e-spinner would be easier than a wheel for me. I had originally thought I'd try a drop spindle, but my hands just can't manage. It's ultimately why I gave up on MHK. My knitting is as good as it will ever be and that works for me. I think the sweater looks great - the colors look fantastic. And ....I think you need a bigger craft room! ☺
I think craft rooms are like purses: you can fill them up no matter how big they get! I'm trying hard to manage the amount of stash I bring in/keep. That's my best hope!
hi Roxanne - another great video - so pleased that the e-spinner giver and receiver are so happy! I have a question about the button band technique to hide and encase the PU stitch selvedge - ie how do you go from having 2 thicknesses of fabric (right side + wrong side) to a single thickness: so…after you have worked 3 stockinette rows on both the right side and the wrong side (and before you start ribbing) do you knit together the right side and wrong side stitches (assuming that these are on 2 separate needles) on the right side, and then start ribbing on the wrong side? Or am I completely mistaken????
I’m so sorry that you’re not absolutely thrilled with your handspun sweater. The spinning, knitting and dyed gradients are brilliant so if you’re not in love with it when you finish, please put it in the box for Finish It February 2025 and turn it into your best sweater ever!!!
Including the closet, it's 15x15 minus an area 3.5x6 along the wall by the door, where the serger table is. The room is narrower along that wall. So about 200 sq ft total
I adore using my EEW6 with its battery- which literally runs for days. I am curious how the Hanson pro differs from the eew (realize you don’t have one to compare),
For me, there was a world of difference between the two (I tried the Nano and electric eel minutes after I tried the Hansen mini-spinner). Lots of people like the spinners from Imagining Robots, but I didn't care for them. That's why it's so important to try them out, first! You never know what you're going to like, and what you're going to hate. I was surprised several times with treadle wheels that I absolutely hated some of them, but really liked others. Clearly, not everyone likes the Hansens!
Can you come an organize my whole house? I do not know how you packed all that into one room and have it usable. My mom does machine embroidery and teaches classes on mostly embroidered greeting cards and her supplies and machines have taken over the whole house. Haven't seen the cat or my dad in a while..... 😂
Thanks Rox. How exciting...a new e-spinner. I enjoyed the tour of your room.
A very enjoyable episode! I was so glad that you received the e-spinner you’ve wanted but, best of all, to be recognized for the joy you bring to us.
I was speechless at the delight when she came to the Central MD Knitting Guild table. As expected, she was delightful.
So funny, I could hear the excitement in your voice during the intro. 😂🎉so glad you were able to both your 'big ticket' items. At a bargain.
Your room looks great.
I’m so happy you have your new E spinner, I hadn’t realised they were so quiet.
I really like the button band of your sweater where the colored yarn appears on both edges.
What an interesting video! The E spinner looks great, and maybe easier to use. Your room is set up very nicely. Your sweater looks lovely to me.

Congratulations on you new spinner! What a generous gift, so happy for you Roxanne! Loved the tour of your studio!!
I love my pro. But I am addicted to spinning. Hansen has the best customer service
What a wonderful gift you received. It looks like you could use a bigger craft room. Great to see how you put it all together.
How wonderful to be thought of in such a generous way. Your space looks organised to me. 🇬🇧

Thanks for all your tips

What a fantastic deal
