Burg Eltz - Medieval castle between Koblenz & Trier, Germany (near the Moselle River)

- A rare, fully intact medieval castle that survived the ravages of the bombings of World War II. Located in a very rural & remote area between the towns of Koblenz and Trier, Germany, just off the Moselle River. It was an absolute delight to visit and it was easy to see why well-known travel host Rick Steves has declared this to be his very favorite of all the European castles he has visited.

I saw Burg Eltz in 1974. When it came into view, I stopped in my tracks. So beautiful. All the castles I saw were amazing but Burg Eltz was number one.
rubyred849 I agree - it really grabs you when you first see it. Thanks for your comments.
me too
Love Germany 🇩🇪 I was raise there now I live in LA, and I got to tell u most beautiful place with so much history and nature to visit can’t wait to go back again for a quick Vacation and PS: FC BAYERN all day every day
Yes, I agree. I was born & raised in Germany until I was 10 years old, then came to the U.S., but my heart never left - it will always be home to me.
Why , if I spoke the language. I will stay there.
Well done, music and all. It's a monument really, I admire the architecture, and most of all the manpower. Wow
Thanks for your comments. 😀
This Castle survived WW1 & WW2, and most important the aftermath , amazing!
Thanks for those updates - it is appreciated.
Este castillo tiene 850
Años de antigüedad y ha pertenecido a 33 generaciones ... me
Encanta esa época ..
Very nice tour of the castle. Thank you for posting this video. It amazes me the ingenious imagination the architects and builders had then.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting. Yes, it is very impressive - too bad they wouldn't allow filming/photos in some of the areas inside.
Very nace video, beautiful castle!

Thank you. Thanks for subscribing.
A beautiful place. Thank you for posting.
laserbeam 002 You are welcome.
Thank you so much for posting this. This is now on my Bucket list of things to see before I die. I love castles and this one....it's heart stopping almost. To be there in person and just stand in the rooms or the outside and have a "If these walls could talk" moment. I love that the day was a gray one. It lends to the feeling of how one pictures life to have been back then. What kind of music do you have playing? love it.
Thank you for the nice comments. Yes, you'd absolutely love this, hope you can visit one day. Re the songs played, they all came from the You Tube music library which has a pretty huge selection. You can access it on your account by going to the following link:

*takes hat and bows* Thank you kind Sir. I am definitely going to look those music links up. Appreciate your channel as well. 😊
Love the music who is it please!!!!
I was there last week, it is truly stunning like right out of a fairy tale.
Yes, indeed !!
I wonder what it must have been like to live back some 3-400 years ago? No TV no radio no internet. And to not live with the pressures of today world.
Ivan, the castle was also very isolated from many of the big towns; we had to take a bus into the back-country, very rural area and it seems the drive took forever to get there. This castle has been in the family since it was built and the current generation still owns it - in fact, they have a room there and come to stay there every now and then.
***** It's amazing, to look down and see all the green that surrounds the castle. Very nice.
Yes Ivan, it was very lush and green. It was too far to walk up to the castle, but we did walk back down - it was 45 minutes and very nice, going through woods, with a nice stream that you could really hear. Just wonderful !!
Veronica: good post. To answer your question: sooner than we would like.
Veronica Roach I love your answer 💛
very beautiful❤😍
Beautiful castle and videography, beautiful clips and angles. I'm not an expert but they seem to capture the magnificence of the castle and do a pretty good job at an impossible task of communicating to the viewer the feel of being in-person vs. a film clip. But the music is a terrible choice. Again, I'm no expert but the rhythmic pounding of keys and use of minor notes gives a sense of doom to what seems should be a sense of wonder. Glad I found this video though, thanks. Gave it a thumbs up.
It's really amazing!
Thanks for your comment; it is appreciated.
Sir, how do you do?
And from which country do you belong?
Adnan Jamil I am doing very well, thank you, Adnan. I live in the U.S. (California) but I was born in Germany and lived there until I was 10 years old & then moved to the U.S....many years ago. Hope all is well with you, also.
Oh! its ok. have you Facebook or Twitter account? if you have, then please send me..

It must be frustrating for the 800+ year old family that owns it having to open it out for tourists to traipse around it on a daily basis.
Found out just a few days ago that the castle is closed to tourists during the winter months - now through April; so, they do get a break now and then.
Thanks for the information.
@@trancehi You're welcome.
and much appreciation to you for taking the time to make the video.
@Andrew Fischbach Nope, Sorry ! Not sure where you got your facts, but most sites state it was begun around 1157, with all sites stating it was built in the 12th Century (which begins with the year 1101 to 1200). It even states that the Eltz family has lived in the castle since the 12th century. 1157 subtracted from 2018 = 861 years ! The link here shows various Google sites to confirm these dates:

Thanks very much, Ivan. Had a feeling you would enjoy this one.
***** Loved the video my brother.. Just in case, Happy Thanksgiving to You Wedigo and Ed.
The same to you and yours, Ivan (what is your wife's name again...I have a lousy memory). Hope you have an enjoyable one. We are going to to something totally different and spend two nights/3 days in Reno !! It's only about a 3.5 hour drive from here. It's supposed to rain but never let stuff like that bother us. :-)
***** Nikita.
***** Have fun in Reno you two.
What was the chapel dilemma?
Something about it being a last minute addition and the question of where to put it, etc. Can't recall the exact details described while we did the tour (but not allowed inside)
@@TheWWWatson Oh, okay. Thank you! Now that you say that I remember hearing in a video that they felt it would be disrespectful to put the chapel below the living area so they built it on a top floor.
@@burtmacklin8373 I believe you are correct in what you heard - that seems to be what we recall hearing also.
Que alguien me expliqué en español latino por fabor.
if you weren't THEM you would have been the RESOURCES that made that castle possible for those who owned it and may still own it. Our lives today are stress free compared to that of the stress of the common folk of that day! I see the beauty, but mostly I think of the sweat and blood that built it!
