I always thought that one of your secrets to your insane speed must be a really sweet hot key setup. Now I'm convinced that there are areas in your hotkey setup that need so much improvement, addressing them could actually make you even faster. And now the only excuse I have for my slowness is that I suck. No amount of hotkey optimization can make me good.
But as Viper said, he would make a few changes now and then to incorporate into his play. Too many changes at once makes for a challenge before one can memorize them and use them in a split second. He is amazingly fast. After four months and 150 games against AI Standard (I know I am slow) which I can routinely beat, I still forget Blacksmith early in Feudal and sometimes into Castle Age! Then I sometimes forget key Upgrades I want. Then I also tend to forget University! I'm more than twice Viper's age, but I do enjoy the game. I can guarantee you'll never see me anywhere near the top of the leaderboard, unless there's only 10 players left in the world.

Mastering the hotkeys and making them second nature is everything in this game. Realistically we all know what to do, and why it has to be done, but we just cant seem to do it fast enough. The hotkeys are the gateway to greatness.
Guys remember Viper is using a norwegia/swedish/danish/islandic keyboard layout, it is most similar to the german one, but there are still a lot of differences. If you would copy it 1:1 be prepared to hurt your hand while using it, so adapt it to your keyboard layout.

I like the DE grid system for hotkeys. You have always the same key for the same position of the unit or tech. This way you can learn the hot keys really fast and easy.
Am i the only one who, besides of learning from these videos, really just enjoy Viper's voice with anything about AoE in the background? It's like Age and his voice are merged in my head lol
It would be nice if the Minimap had a separate setting for its scale from the rest of the HUD. Of the parts of the HUD, the map is the most important part to see clearly I feel.

Your hotkeys are yours and as you say they are quite messy and works probably just for you. Explaining wich hotkeys are the most important in the game could be a much better and interesting video probably. Continue the good work!

I heard Viper's stressed caveats about copying his settings, but I did find a few Mods and Hot Keys useful. We all play a little differently, make different Civ's and strategy choices and of course different reasoning for some Hot Keys. As a fairly new player, older too, all I can do is keep trying, memorizing a little more as I go, and kicking myself for forgetting some basic buildings and upgrades. Long live AoE2!!!!!
I stopped playing for a decade or so and came back so used to using WASD to control all movement so I spent a long time crafting some sort of WASD scroll hotkey setup for AoE, it's still a WIP but I'm slowly adding to it and it really has helped to not have to relearn how to use late 90's strategy game hotkeys
Would love to see a video with our "home" or default hand placement while you're playing, or just a quick match with keyboard cam as well. Thanks for the info, as well as the disclaimer that we probably shouldn't use these.

Thanks for the video, TheViper. So, the civ tier lists....are you gonna do this for every map in the ranked map pool, or only those that have been existing since the days of Voobly? It's not exactly a suggestion, but, knowing how often the civs get balanced with each monthly update, you could modify your title to add the word "Outdated" in simple brackets. This is so that, for people who may view the tier list videos in the future, they know that some of these civs may have changed tiers with each update. (e.g. Khmer and Vietnamese. In just a few updates, they moved from a pretty bad tier to almost top tier. Hopefully, the next update won't shift them back to a lower tier.) Wow. I also tend to use the ctrl grp + spacebar thing. Idk if it's faster than double tapping the ctrl grp key, but, i'm used to this way.
@@lucabe4469 my assumption would be for post imp fights where you are churning out units into the fight. Better to have them on aggressive and fighting than sitting idle. (Not op but that is my thought process)
You should be using stand ground, not defensive stance. and only on ranged units. Higher lvl players will bind stand ground to something easy and use it for mostly ranged units, as you want to prevent them from scattering around all the time. I highly recommend to not use create unit as defensive stance, as some pro players had it on b yaccident and thought the game was completely bugged, and its also no reason to have it on, imo. Was curious if you used the "Select all " hotkeys. Currently I'm using those pretty much exclusively, and I have them set to Shift + (Z (Barracks), X (Range), C (Stable), V (Workshop), B (Castle), G(Krepost)) and a I use CTRL + (Same Keys) to cycle through if needed. Very interesting to see!

Omg thank you vipa... At least I got to know the important things to have hotkeys for. I'm not sure I'm utilising the military stances very well. Just patrol and splits. I think I need to use stand ground patrol and switch to aggressive with my melee units.
I mixed the standard hotkeys from all version together. I'm using the building hotkeys from AoC, the unit production (except vills) from HD and now I'm trying to somehow include the tech hot keys from DE. Not sure how all those will work together but it's like mastering my chaotic workbench at home. To the untrained eye it might look messy but I know exactly where all of my stuff is. As long as no one moves anything I'm fine :D
having the eco upgrades all on Q is bad in my opinion. it would be better to have them exactly on the same key as the "goto" hotkey. e.g. CTRL-A is go to lumber Camp and A as the Wood upgrade. So you click to you Lumber camp and do the upgrade in a super fast way. You should also think about what the really important upgrades are and only give them hotkeys. e.g. Ballistic and Chemistry in the University. These are usually done in times of dire need for attention. The rest can be activated by mouseclick.
Usually I manually click the lumber, the mill etc because it's usually in vision in my screen, and my ring fingers resting position is Q, so it's usually the quickest click.
I am confused about the following: given that your Archery Range hotkey is W, doesn't it conflict with the fact that when you've selected an Archery Range, if you press 'W' you will make a skirmisher? E.g. it seems that if you spam 'W' to cycle through your ranges - which would constitute a typical use of the cycling hotkey - then instead of cycling you would just choose the first range and queue many skirmishers? Any clarification would be welcome..
don't military unit commands, like "box formation" overlap with game commands, like "go to archery range"? How does this work? You have to click on a empty space on the map before you can jump to military buildings?
If you have military selected with the possibility of doing a formation, then it doesn't interfere. I would have to deselect the units to go to the range though.

Do you disable that "enhance pointer precision" option on Windows' mouse configuration? I've heard that FPS players do so, but when I tried it I felt it was terrible. I really would like to know if I should get used to the disabled option.

Can someone please explain at the start of the game how does Viper is always clicking on the TC but the camera doesn't go to the TC I mean, he can be looking at some random part of the map while he sees the TC's options and progress If I want to see how my TC is working I press H but the camera forcibly goes to the location where the TC is placed, while Viper can still be looking elsewhere without the camera moving anywhere
I use the default hotkeys, which is a good base to start with.. I may change the hotkeys for fireships and demos. Having to select more ships button is annoying.

Since this is about mods, can someone please help with taunt mods? I just bought AOE2 DE and would love to hear custom taunts (Trump, Monthy, Gordon etc.) during my games! I downloaded (subscribed) it from the Ingame-MODS-menu, the text of the taunts is ok but the sound is not played :( From what I figured out the file-type changed from mp3 (or other usuals) to WEM-files. So I think creating new mods will be more complicated. BUT the existing mods in DE are already with those new files! Therefore I don't understand why I can't hear these sounds?!? Please share your wisdom, if you can help :)
There are many things wrong with chat since the last update. Their stupid censorship tool was going berserk, so they seem to have just decided to remove some of its functionality in lieu of a real "solution".
Before the video, I used to blame hotkeys for me being slow, but after seeing viper binds, I can confirm I'm just shit.

New De hotkeys have WS. Imho, people should learn de hotkeys and adapt from there bcoz they are very user friendly. The old aoc hotkeys were a mess.
My very first hotkey change was putting palisade wall on B so BB for easy quick walls.
I have palisade gate on V, so i do VV for quickgate, then VC for stone wall, VX for palisade wall, and VZ for stone gate.

Ive adapted my own hotkeys from the original aoc hotkeys and they are very similar to yours. Guess my hotkeys arent the reason I am terrible at aoe2.

Software dev here, can confirm it *is* possible to change your hotkeys, however the only way to do it is one at a time.

TheViper (every time is asked): i do not recommend to copy my hotkeys, probably wont work and u need a set comfortable for you.

Since this is about mods, can someone please help with taunt mods?
I just bought AOE2 DE and would love to hear custom taunts (Trump, Monthy, Gordon etc.) during my games!
I downloaded (subscribed) it from the Ingame-MODS-menu, the text of the taunts is ok but the sound is not played :(
From what I figured out the file-type changed from mp3 (or other usuals) to WEM-files.
So I think creating new mods will be more complicated.
BUT the existing mods in DE are already with those new files! Therefore I don't understand why I can't hear these sounds?!?
Please share your wisdom, if you can help :)
There are many things wrong with chat since the last update. Their stupid censorship tool was going berserk, so they seem to have just decided to remove some of its functionality in lieu of a real "solution".
I basicly improved the grid hotkey settings my problem now is that i have double binds. Would love to have a unselect hotkey.
