You forgot some reasons like both of them really care for each other and look towards each other for admiration and motivation, Ash had never considered his own goal for any girls before but for Serena he did and also he did stuffs which Serena likes despite not liking it himself. Although at the beginning of Xy Ash was just a dense wall but near the end he got more comfortable with Serena and had grown feelings for her although he might not have expressed it but his actions proved them and the seed was planted for sure! I wish in Journeys she may return!!

To be honest Misty and Ash would be a very difficult relationship, they’re constantly arguing unlike Serena and Ash, I’m not picking sides but for the newer fans to the Pokémon anime, they will at least know who Serena is and be more accepted by fans then with Misty, and Misty and Ash haven’t seen each other in ages, and even when they did meet in Sun and Moon, it was only for a short time. I honestly love Serena myself, she’s an amazing character and I loved watching her in X and Y. Ash is shown to have feelings for Serena too, and it was he who invited her in his journey. Also to anyone wondering about Dawn, May, Iris, etc I would say probably not? To anyone who doesn’t ship Serena and Ash, good for you! Your opinion! I won’t argue against it!
(As of the moment typing this comment) Misty is currently the only girl traveling with Ash. We don't know if the other girls will show up. This doesn't mean that Ash will choose Misty but until any other girl shows up; their chances aren't as good. I'm personally hoping that Ash and Misty do not get together but I have to make the point. To be fair; the other companions could show up in the Finale. Serena could get her chance. But, even if she does; Ash could end up not choosing her.

However, looking at the last time Ash and Serena met; they barely had time to say Hello, and Goodbye before Ash left. Which to me seems like the Show is teasing Ash and Serena's reunion. I wish the art style was normal. Every pokegirl that made a return looked normal. The journey series still has that goofy art style from Sun and Moon. If Serena came back, she'll look stupid because of the art style. if ash’s Era is going to come to an end I want it to be like this, he becomes the leaders of the first ever all types Pokemon gym with (pikachu, sceptile, greninja, charizard, goodra, and Heracross) and he marries Serena and have a son who then carries on trying to become a Pokémon master since ash was never able to himself.
I think The Pokemon Company knows the millions of people who want Serena to return. If they don't I think they (the Pokemon company employees ) ALL need to see a doctor.
Serena has yet to show up in this last series of episodes. She hopefully will show up (along with the other companions) in the Finale but that isn't a sure thing. And as much as I don't want Ash and Misty to end up together; Misty is the only girl currently traveling with Ash.
