    The slat armor did its job. The electrodes from the fuze where cut resulting in that the shaped charge flattened itself against the armor before detonating. If the warhead had worked properly, we'd see a metal jet shooting through the thin metal armor.

    • @alloy299
      @alloy299 8 лет назад +62

      It lets the fuse (the pointy thing that activates the warhead) pass but damages the warhead that is wider, that way when the fuse finally hits the armor and activates the warhead, it is either not functional or has been deformed/broken, making it less effective.

      Dan Frederiksen Well, slat armor can destroy a projectile no matter the angle, a perfect hit like that would stop it, a non perfect hit can also destroy it, just a hit to the main body but the fuse staying intact will negate a jet from forming. If the contact fuse hits the bar, it can cause a imperfect jet that won’t be able to penetrate armor.

    Just to clarify a popular misconception. RPG (meaning the Russian designed anti-tank weapon) does not stand for "rocket propelled grenade". RPG stands for Ruchnoy Protivotankoviy Granatomyot which means handheld anti-tank grenade launcher.

    Slat armors are effective against RPG, but not against more modern rocket/missile.
    Also, slat armors have a 45-55% efficacy: If the piezo hits the slat, the shape charge will trigger and punch through 300-400mm RHA.
    Good vehicle design, base armor, Add-on armor, spall liners, FSS (...) shall be part of part of the protection package.

      It wont sadly. RPGs or anti-tank weaponries with twin warheads or tandem shaped charges are designed to defeat the slat armor, era, modular armor, and thickest frontal armor of any modern mbts like abrams and T-90.

    • @hazardous458
      @hazardous458 5 лет назад +4

      _ArmoredGlassCannon [IRD] [NA] No, the point of tandem is to have the primary charge destroy era blocks and slat armor. Mbt uses composite armor. The first charge won’t have anything to counter so it would not have any effect other than weaken it a bit as the first charge is very weak.

    • @hazardous458

      No, the slats are spaced apart so the fuze wouldnt hit the bar, if it hit the bar, the fuze would engage thus detonating the charge and allowing a jet to form and penetrate vehicle

      the armor is meant to damage the warhead of the anti tank munition without detonating it, the damage from the shaped penetrator making it much less effective, there is still a chance the munition can detonate before its damaged.

    BUT what if it was MULTIPLE RPG blows? how many rounds would it be able to digest?
    ALSO what if the following weapons were used on the armor (assume 1 shot each)
    1.) A 75mm Sherman gun firing the M72 AP round
    2.) A 75mm Kwk L/48 firing Pzgrt 40 or
    3.) A 76mm M1 Gun firing HVAPS or the 90mm M3 AP rounds?
    4.) A 76mm PaK 42 of the Panther firing APCBC-HE
    5.) A Sherman Mayfly 1c firing the QF 17 pdr using APCBC-HE
    6.) A Tiger I 88mm firing Pzgrt 39
    7.) A PaK 43 firing Pzgrt 39
    8.) BS-3 100mm AP rounds
    9.) 122mm BR-471
    OR if it was subject to:
    1.) HE barrages from the Sherman 75mm or 90mm HE rounds?
    2.) HE barrages from the 88mm of a Tiger I
    3.) HE barrages from the PaK 43
    4.) HE rounds from the BS-3
    5.) HE rounds from a 122mm gun cannon
    6.) HE rounds from the 152mm guns

    • @della_410
      @della_410 6 лет назад +8

      That's an interesting question, all the rounds you first mentioned are AP, either solid shot or with filler which would penetrate the armor without trouble, but the thing is that the RPG fires a chemical round, that is a HEAT warhead that depends on an explosion inside the warhead to shoot molten metal onto the armor to achieve a penetration, a HEAT no matter the speed or distance (the RPG's rockets actually travel slower than a 9mm bullet) will always achieve the same results unless it is detonated early or the warhead gets damaged before impact (as seen on the video).
      AP/Solid shots and penetrating rods rely on kinetic energy to achieve a penetration and can only be defeated by armor plating, that is Rolled Homogeneous Armor (solid steel alloy) or Composite Armor.
      Then onto the HE barrages, these do not penetrate but detonate on impact, if they are strong enough they can deform the metal or cause a concussion that will cause internal damage on the vehicle. A Sherman 75mm HE wouldn't be too lethal whereas a 152mm HE round can cause nasty damage by concussion.

    • @HeirofGojira91
      @HeirofGojira91 6 лет назад

      Hmm what about REPEATED BLOWS FROM HE 75mm Sherman shells? So direct repeated barrages? Or at the very least internal damage and crew casualties would be inevitable? Or the armor will eventually give in?
      Given I thought hmm - if the SLAT armor could endure well a fair amount of firepower ...

    • @rjlee3112
      @rjlee3112 9 лет назад +4

      Nop. The thing is that people seem to misunderstand what the armor is supposed to do.
      It works if it manages to deform the shaped charge or prevents optimal jet formation. That does not happen reliably though. And there are tests of this armor that show that even a deformed RPG can still penetrate the armor behind it.
      Most unconfined vehicles with high internal volume will be fine even without this sort of additional protection.
      Its used because its cheap and it does have a chance of reducing damage to the vehicle itself. Its not, never was and will never be an actual safeguard from anti-armor weapons.

    • @kaim268
      @kaim268 9 лет назад +9
