A nice little stash there. Be interesting to see what you do to the steamer, will it run on the layout or is it a static model? You said about the metcalfe kits, they are so easy to build, sometimes a bit monotonous if there are lots of windows but instructions are super clear, you should enjoy that. One tip if you don’t mind me saying. Metcalfe kits leave the white edge of the card showing, I suggest you carefully run along these with a suitably coloured felt pen (the printed part away from the pen, if you slip and draw on the face, it’s the reverse side). By colouring the edges the buildings look more lifelike, especially if you varnish them with Matt varnish then add weathering powders. Oooo sweet lol. Seriously have fun.
I have a small steam engine on my layout and I use it for shunting and pulling my HST Mk3 coaches for rail tours. These small hornby engines are really useful and look god when weathered. A good start to your layout, you may want to start sketching or do layout designs for bescot yard. I am very interested what final outcome is going to look like😀

Nice one your modelling similar time scale as me, I'm doing 1984 - 1990, I'll look forward to seeing how your layout comes together.
My layout is 2000+ looking forward to seeing how your layout progresses
Think you'd be better selling the 'smokey joe' & using the money to fund something more appropriate?
