Something I always loved about The Cult is that they had all the tropes of 60s acid rock, but they put a fresh, new spin on it. I’m especially fond of “The Phoenix”, which cranks those tropes up to 11 and pushes them over the top. It has a continual guitar solo throughout which sounds like Hendrix on steroids.
Well, I love it. As to a "deeper cut".... maybe try "Spirit Walker" from their first album. A personal favourite of mine. The Cult were never very complex in the rhythm section, but Ian's vocals and especially Billy's guitar are what makes their sound so special. It's goth rock, and in that somewhat pedestrian sound, they're a great band. But, I'd always recommend Sisters of Mercy before The Cult. SoM's "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" (a sort of compilation of singles and EPs) or the album Floodland, might catch your interest a bit more than The Cult.
This seems to be one of those songs that everyone who lived during the time period when it was released (like myself) loves while everyone else who is younger and listens to it now doesn't like it as much as we did back then. It's probably anything but a masterpiece and it comes with a lot of nostalgia for me, but, man, when I hear Billy's guitar on this particular song, I just melt away (and I'm sure that other guys and gals in my generation do as well), but I can see that you don't think that it's a great song, like someone else already mentioned: it hasn't aged well. For me it still sounds great though.
This was the follow up single to “Sanctuary” the B side is called “Little Face” which is a great song, “Big Neon Glitter” , “Nirvana” and “Hollow Man” from the album Love are great songs, you might like “Fire Woman” or “Sun King” from the album Sonic Temple
The Cult Love album is a seminal 80s LP which encapsulates the bands mid 80s sound perfectly, this and Shes Sells Sanctuary both classic and timeless tracks from it are both great songs
I listened to this album a lot as a teen, I think it still holds up well…it’s more psych/indie than the harder rocking follow up “Electric”. This album has a great flow and this song is probably better listened to in that context, it’s moody and much more textural compared to the straight ahead bombast of Electric.
Honestly there’s much better 80s post-punk artists than The Cult for me personally. You’d definitely love The Chameleons, The Sound and The Opposition FAR MORE
I agree for The Sound and the most underrated The Opposition (whose first three albums are outstanding in every respect). I've never been thrilled with The Chameleons, and for my part I would have added The Comsat Angels to the list (especially for their excellent albums Sleep No More and Fiction).
Honest opinion. So few are prepared to be that candid. Appreciated. I personally like the song, but you do have a point. I haven't heard this in ages and it seems to be a slower tempo than I remember. So I can hear what you mean about mundane.
I bought this album and Love and Rockets Express at the same time. 1986. I haven’t listened to this album since about 1987. I still listen to Love and Rockets. I recommend that album.
one of my favorites. of course, i love songs about rain. if they are good songs. ian has one of my favorite rock voices, it's unique. edit: for me, boring is America and a majority of the Eagles and.... Kiss. Never the Cult.
Very Sisters Of Mercy guitaring at the start. The rest? Yeah, it does what I would expect, never having gotten into these guys so this is a first-listen for me, too.
It's one of the best songs in the album. I'm really surprised at the amount of scorn for this song I'm seeing in the comments. I love it. The overall sound of the album can be a bit dated, but the riff here is fantastic and the building up at the end makes it a classic 80s track. Obviously, the live versions are much better, but I think the studio version stands on its own merits. As this is a gothic band strongly rooted in hard rock, I think this track should be played louder. Every metal or hard rock song played at a low volume is a bit boring. The volume makes a lot of difference to these genres. Just a suggestion for next reactions. I think Brother Wolf Sister Moon and The Phoenix are good deep tracks from the same album, if you wanna try this band again.
I like this song :) It might be not that deep when it comes to the meaning or ideas, but, oh! It’s still a nice little gothy rock track :) Upbeat and cheeky ☔ Sometimes it’s right what you need. Oh, and I prefer the Cult to the Sisters of Mercy 🌚
The entire Love album should be listened to in its entirety--one track builds on another. Same with Electric (somewhat) and Sonic Temple (definitely). Sun King into can't be beat.
Try any of the following tracks for a bit more depth and variation, Wolf Child's Blues, Spiritwalker, The River, The Witch, Joy, Rise, Dirty Little Rockstar, Honey from a Knife, Dark Energy
Haha... Can't disagree with your review. It's one of those songs that's simply a vibe. Like atmosphere. It either hooks you or it doesn't. I like the chill. Sort of that Goth-droning late 80s vibe that got caught in a harder rock sound/song.
I agree with you. The volume should be very higher. I don't understand why the song in the beginning had a much louder sound. It makes great difference.
Man, so much cult disdain. Edie ciao baby is a great track, and so is anything from sonic temple. Try sun king. But in fairness, they were just better than the rest of the 80s crap, not up there with the greats. I like em though
"She Sells Sanctuary" is their staple. "Fire Woman" was their biggest hit. "Rain" and "Love Removal Machine" are OK. That's it from me. They were never that great for me, though my old cover band did play "Sanctuary" for sure.
I never liked the more hard rock direction that The Cult took from the album Love and beyond so I don't like this track. It sounds very generic and uninteresting. The only album that I like from the band is their debut album Dreamtime which I find much more original and personal (I include their non-album single "Ressurection Joe" released four months after Dreamtime) and that's it.
@@samstevenson5328 I agree, there are some good Death Cult tracks like "Gods Zoo" but I didn't quote it as they were an earlier incarnation of The Cult.
This annoyed me greatly in 85. Primal Scream's "Getcha Rocks Off" annoyed me too. So did Stone Roses' "second coming" LP after the melodic, atmospheric debut (although I only listened a few times). Well done for being Honest. 70s Hard Rock is where it's at. The Darkness had skills and a sense of Hiwmor, as we say in Welsh. Try the melodic drama of BlueÖysterCult next time? Shooting Shark is a polished bass slap on the thigh of 80s crossover Where Do WE go from Here Hot Hit Hope.
Love Ian's voice!!! Love the guitar player!!! Love Th Cult!!!! It is boring!!!! And very lame song!!! He didn't go off with his voice! There's no guitar licks going off!!!! I don't like it!!!! You are right!!!

Sisters of Mercy for the WIN!

I adore it and I was born in 2004. I love The Cult
This is a banger...if you grew up on this during this time this was fresh. All the 90's bands jacked this sound. So...give crsdit where it's due.

Classic. Goth anthem.

I’m a fan of The Cult, but props to you for mentioning The Sound…woefully underrated!
Solid gothic tinged rock from a good band. I used to enjoy playing this live in an old covers band.
Honest opinion. So few are prepared to be that candid. Appreciated. I personally like the song, but you do have a point. I haven't heard this in ages and it seems to be a slower tempo than I remember. So I can hear what you mean about mundane.
Want to get me on the dance floor, spin up this track. The Cult is in my top five favorite bands.
One of my favourite albums from that period, along with Sisters of Mercy "Floodland"
Wow
Not heard this in 20years and then
heard it on the radio on way home from Jersey shore and now JP features it!
I bought this album and Love and Rockets Express at the same time. 1986. I haven’t listened to this album since about 1987. I still listen to Love and Rockets. I recommend that album.

This song is a classic, period
The video of this song is great as well, with the two witch like goth creatures singing back up as if they came back from the ADDAMS family.
My thoughts exactly, JP. Cliché city, both lyrically and stylistically. It's OK but I've heard the likes a thousand times before.

The goth alternative CULT here, and in my opinion, the best version of them.
I like this song :)
It might be not that deep when it comes to the meaning or ideas, but, oh!
It’s still a nice little gothy rock track :)
Upbeat and cheeky ☔
Sometimes it’s right what you need.
Oh, and I prefer the Cult to the Sisters of Mercy 🌚

Sun King into can't be beat.
My favorite track off the album is the title track, "Love." I hope you give it a shot sometime.
Try any of the following tracks for a bit more depth and variation, Wolf Child's Blues, Spiritwalker, The River, The Witch, Joy, Rise, Dirty Little Rockstar, Honey from a Knife, Dark Energy
nb that this song is not actually about rain. it’s about one of the two things rock and roll songs are usually about. (in this case, not drugs.)
I love the song.

Ty Skip :)
I think you should turn up The Cult to 11 .
I agree with you. The volume should be very higher. I don't understand why the song in the beginning had a much louder sound. It makes great difference.
A silly story, I bought this as a long play single. The record was a 12 Inch @ 45 rpms I thought it was 33 1/3. It sounds better slowed down.
Man, so much cult disdain. Edie ciao baby is a great track, and so is anything from sonic temple. Try sun king. But in fairness, they were just better than the rest of the 80s crap, not up there with the greats. I like em though
Ty Darien :)
Try anything off "Electric" or "Sonic Temple".......both had a more Rock feel.......🎸
Probably the best track on love about oral sex by all accounts
Check out the track Spirtwalker
Better tracks are
Love
Big neon glitter
The Witch
The Witch.....👍👏👏🤟

ALSO when they were known as The Southern Death Cult & Death Cult in 1983👍🏼

This is the fascinating thing with music. This song is amazing for me and I think completely the opposite of you.
I did not hit like. I let it run to give you a view. If this was atmospheric back ground at a bar or a party, I wouldn't leave. It works for that.
You can hit like, just as an appreciation of the time JP took to make the video. It doesn’t have to be because you like or dislike the song..
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 I comment often. Had you read more than one you would have not wasted your time with this comment.
It's a track that needs to be played very loud through good speakers, not through headphones.
@@JayJamsSpams There is always something to be said for a sub-woofer pushing the sound through your skin. :)
This song has not dated well. It definitely sounded better back then. Now it reminds me of Billy Idol. Cheers.
Booooooooooooo !!

Sorry pal, adios.... perhaps the symbolism is a little tough to grasp...What isn't boring to you?
I agree. Meh.
🥱
Least favourite Cult song.
