I was also wondering if the rings Jones was wearing meant anything too?
The writers weren't great about backstory were they? Or flashbacks? Or filling in blanks for why he was chained to the floor or why he was traumatized? Or showing characters' reactions to new info. And they had like, two whole seasons to show one.
