The Originals was so popular and considered better in many ways than TVD, because this show was centered around villians who were self-aware of their darkness, accepting of the darkness in others, and succeeded at cherishing the one thing TVD never actually achieved. The unconditional love of family. Having a different writer in those first 3 seasons is what made that show such a masterpiece.
