Blue Origin BE-4 just SHOCKED NASA! But realized SpaceX Raptor is...Musk laugh!
When mentioning the name Blue Origin, we immediately think of their slow progress and delays in rocket production. The New Glenn rocket has undergone over a decade of development without any flights, and the BE-4 rocket engine has repeatedly been criticized for Blue Origin's late deliveries to their ULA customers.
Blue Origin BE-4 just SHOCKED NASA! But realized SpaceX Raptor is...Musk laugh!
However, now, faced with the superior development situation of competitors in the industry, especially SpaceX, Blue Origin can no longer sit still. For the first time in 24 years, their BE-4 engine has flown on the first flight of the Vulcan rocket, shaking the entire space industry.
And yet, they also revealed the huge things they did to the BE-4 engine to prepare for the fierce space war in the future, to the point that NASA scientists were shocked.
Blue Origin BE-4 just SHOCKED NASA! But realized SpaceX Raptor is...Musk laugh!
So, what exactly did Blue Origin just do with the BE-4 engine?
How will Blue Origin use its ace in the hole to compete with SpaceX? Is the BE-4 engine as reliable as we think it is?
Let's find out in today's episode of Alpha Tech:
With the success of the Vulcan rocket, the BE-4 engine subsequently emerged as a key factor in helping Blue Origin return to the space race.
Following a spectacular public demonstration of creating a relatively clean Mach Diamond exhaust stream, the BE-4 engine continued to be a hot topic of discussion when Blue Origin released a video of a hot-fire test with the BE-4 engine at the historic Test Stand 4670 in Huntsville, where their engine factory is located.

You’ll have much more long term success and respect with reporting straight news and presenting it as such than using clickbait graphics and phrases that would appeal to children. Know your audience. They are not stupid. You can do this. You build your audience with trust. Do not be afraid and resort to sensationalized approaches. What do I think? Up to this point, I think BE4 has been a total failure. Failure to deliver on a timely basis has taken ULA to the point of bankruptcy with a sale likely. We hope it works in the future as well as the first delivered engine seems to have worked. BO dropped the expected capability to return the engines for repeated use so that makes them far more costly and means that many more engines will have to be built. Does BO have the capability to produce enough engines for the already approved projects? I think we'll have to wait and see on that one. I doubt it right now. Their history has not proven they can do it on a timely basis. Myself, there are only a couple of people I dislike the same or more than Bezos so I'm biased.

I was very impressed by the two BE4 performance with Vulcan's Maiden flight. But mass producing reliable engines is a massive hill to clime. We may see 2 more BE4s delivered to ULA this year, but will be surprised to see a test flight of "New Glenn" any time soon.
I wish both BO and ULA the best. Yet both companies have to face the fully reusability of Starship maybe as soon as 2025 making them obsolete before achieving much.
Even IF New Glenn flies soon, BO are far from even partial reusability and therefore any hope of being relevant financially.

@@professorg8383 Ok, so BO has already brought two BE-4 Engines to actually fly into the sky, Space X did that with 78 raptor engines in two flight tests (if we exclude the debris broken engines from ift 1). If the test results about Raptor 3 spread by Elon Musk hold some truth, each one of them will produce as much power as each BE-4 engine in the forseeable future. Let's wait until BO has flown its New Glenn using 7 BE-4 engines, before we praise their superior safety record.

    • @professorg8383
      @professorg8383 17 дней назад

@@Ganjalf420- No, it was not a "test flight". The Vulcan VC2S rocket launched the first certification mission from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida. Cert-1 delivered the Astrobotic Peregrine commercial lunar lander into a highly elliptical orbit more than 220,000 miles (360,000 km) above Earth to intercept the Moon and carry a Celestis Memorial Spaceflight Payload into deep space.
The Vulcan did everything it was supposed to. However, the Peregrine payload had a propulsion anomaly preventing it from completing its mission and landing on the Moon. But the Vulcan did its part flawlessly
But you are correct that the Vulcan platform is configurable to be way more powerful than Starship!!
As for "IFT3 achieving everything a "normal" Rocket can do" , That's complete nonsense!!! Starship barely reached LEO altitude!! And it didn't work!
The Raptor powered Starship is largely based on a modernized version of the 50 year old Russian N1 rocket and its RD-270 engines. .However, each of the four attempts to launch an N1 failed in flight, with the second attempt resulting in the vehicle crashing back onto its launch pad shortly after liftoff. Adverse characteristics of the large cluster of thirty engines and its complex fuel and oxidizer feeder systems were not revealed earlier in development because static test firings had not been conducted.
SpaceX completed many static fire tests on a vehicle using Raptor 2s, including a 31 engine test (intended to be 33) on 9 February 2023,[61] and a 33 engine test on 25 August 2023 During testing, more than 50 chambers melted, and more than 20 engines exploded. Raptor-3 is nothing more than a set of desired performance targets!! Raptor-2 has a long way to go, despite Musk quotes. (note: He lies a lot!)
A big problem with using so many smaller engines is that each has a couple hundred potential failure points. Multiply that by 33 and your odds of complete success goes way down. The fluid dynamics of firing 33 engines become ridiculously complex and virtually unpredictable. This is just common sense!! One catastrophic failure can easily cascade into vehicle loss. You can design countermeasure to protect against that to a degree, but all that adds weight. The Starship booster has required modifications that have all added weight. Virtually all have addressed structural deficiencies. As a result, they can't hit the original design fift capabilities. Musk doesn't talk about it this way but any decent engineer can see it! In the end, it's very much about thrust to weight ratios. This is why Musk is already talking about a version 2 and 3. Version 1 does not meet its designed spec!
But hey, keep believing in your hero!

Out dated Spaghetti Monster rocket engine. Also no sign of tubes or passages in the bell to use that heat to boots things.
I'm sure Jeff already knows he is outclassed by
Raptor 2 and why, and that Raptor 3 is this year, and Raptor 4 on the drawing board.
Meanwhile Elon and Tribe likely to do launch 4 in weeks, And trying to correct the re entry profile good enough to hit the water in one piece.
Critical part will be getting sub orbital, and not locked bass ackwards this time...
That retro burn last time turned out to be problematic.
Might have been better to put the nose down with gas thrusters, and give it a nudge inclined down enough to get into upper air, then try to level it out and fly it as long as possible above the plasma hot zone. Thin air will heat less, but still reduce velocity over time. And if dropping too much maybe good to try flying Starship in a climb to eat velocity, maybe even roller coaster it a few times.
Another possibility might be side to side sweeps flying, snaking thru the air to eat up the forward energy.
We'll see what happens, but I suspect V-2 should have more lifting surface and actual control surfaces. And be capable by design of such manouvers.
Altitude is not the problem, its that insane velocity of being orbital, and that velocity should be able to get some bite in thin air, and keep it high, thin, and cool, long enough to do some good.
Its like extending orbital decay, but using wings.... Eventually you might lose enough velocity to do a Wiggly Flappers drop...
Or if you could design well, eventual ships could land on their sides on wheels or planing hull shape.
Tail landings look cool, but likely fuel users.
And you need infrastucture to take the burn...

I think the cult is more likely the online types, who click on everything Elon.
I'm really only interested in Space stuff. And SpaceX happens to be in the lead. But I know they are capable of losing that status if not flexible enough.
There are signs of dawning flexibilty, They now thinking of several
Starship models, Many of which have problems. And there are better solutions for some of their jobs.
I can be patient, and plant concepts ahead of the curve when I can. With most people takes around 6 months to adopt a new concept as their own.
But I have seen Elon do it in weeks or a couple three months. He is way less resistant to conceptual logic. Which also makes it fun for me as the gratification is more rapid.
He is an Aspie, if you can show him clean logic, he adopts.
And after that he is bullet proof with it.
All his workers are not uniform, some are also rapid response thinkers...
      And not the usual Yammerheads...

Here's the worrisome thing: SpaceX and Blue Origin are in competition for the lunar lander. Strictly as an informed layman, I'm not sure Starship will work as a lander. It's too tall and I'm not convinced it can land on a non-prepared surface. Blue Origin's concept is pretty conservative; I'm not even sure they'll be the prime contractor on it. But if it's developed at the same rate as other BO projects, we might end up hitching rides on Chinese rockets. Like I said, Musk promises he can colonize Mars by next week. He'll fail repeatedly but eventually he'll get there. Bezos is more like a classic contractor; every years he comes back and says he'll deliver hardware for just a little more money.
