Much to give thanks for from Kensington MN! I fell from a skid loader bucket almost that high onto frozen ground. The tether is a good idea! Also like someone said nails don't last forever but maybe hardwood pegs?
Joel it's a real good feeling to hire a building like that built! On the other hand building it yourself is creating a life time memory with people that you love and can rely on! In the future at any age you are, you'll never look at that barn without memories of Joel's Dad and Joel's mom, and (Joel's Gavin 😂😂) keep pushing forward enjoy your channel, your personality and quirky humor, be safe and healthy!
Dad J is there anything you can not do? That barn is looking amazing! So good to see everyone. Wishing everyone at Sunny Knoll Stables, The Veggie Boys, and anyone reading this, Happy Thanksgiving!!!! Be safe. Have fun. Eat lots of turkey and pie. See you in the next one.
So it's OFFICIAL Joel your DAD is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME a man of many talents ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Loving the Barn build videos they informative re construction and showcase your family's knowledge 🎉🎉🎉🎉 Hi Gavin 😁 Joel another great video 👍👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love from the UK x
Please put more temporary supports on those walls. Top heavy & a good wind could be catastrophic for all the Hard work you guys have put in. js Happy Thanksgiving to all of You. Be safe. Very proud of all the quality work you guys have put in together!
Joel please bolt the plates since you havent notched the 6x6. the load on the roof will be too much for just nails. I would bolt a 2x6 under the plate on each 6x6 inside and out. that might hold your roof up
No matter what, you can't trust those galvanized gun nails to last for the decades you are going to need that roof to stay up! At every post, a hole should be drilled all the way through both of the top plates and the post and they should be through-bolted with galvanized bolts, nuts, and washers of 1/2" minimum. Those nails will last for years, but not decades before they fail. Do you want that roof to collapse when you're 70 years old? Buy bolts, young man! Buy bolts! 🤠
I agree 100%. Better yet would be to have notched the uprights to fully support the weight. Can't justify nails holding the weight. "Boy.....you've got to carry that weight, a long time". 35 year union carpenter talking.
It’s great the progress you are making, considering that you still have your main duties to the horses etc. to take care of. Well done all. Best wishes from England U.K.
Hey Joel, Mom and Dad - always love your videos - thanks for sharing! Soo exciting to watch the construction of the hay barn - wow - so much work. Pretty nice you can do all the work yourselves, saves tons of $$$ ! It is looking great! I wonder if there are many Amish communities in your area - sure they'd love to help :-) Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! 🦃🥧
Just watched the top plates (girts) go up on the barn sidewalls. I'm sure lateral 2x6 bracing will follow but do not forget to TIE the inside plate to the outside plate using short pieces of 2x6 as well . Girts must work together. Fred, Mary's husband.😊
The barn is really taking shape! I'm glad you mentioned that Subscribing doesn't cost anything. Several years ago I always thought it did and I never subscribed to any people I followed until I found out it wouldn't cost me anything. You-Tube could have honestly used different wording like "Follow" instead.
Good to see your dad with harness. I cut out of a telephone pole but long sleeves, heavy pants and a sticker bush saved me. I did use push back to slow me down since I was buckled in.
To save some time and mearsuring put top plate on inside after the rafters Then all you would need to do is raise the plate up to rafter and it is guaranteed to be tight on both sides
Joel, the build is coming along nicely. Please do yourself a favor though and put up some temporary bracing on those walls. They are getting very top heavy now that you have all those boards on the posts. The way they were wiggling while Pops was nailing them was nerve-wracking. You have way too much work into that structure at this point for anything bad to happen!
Don't you need another board that goes horizontally on top of what you are calling the top plate? Those walls were really moving while you were putting things up. I don't think that will stop until you put up the end walls. It really will be a big structure!!
Holly cow figure you would have some of the building done. You have to be safe climbing up on top with a rope attach to a steady post . And wear shoes that don’t slip and slid and gloves. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day with family and friends . Be safe working on barn . You’re all awesome hard workers for not calling construction workers. We did and it took a good bite out of wallet. You all rock family and friends. Love the video Joel.
building our future together. this is just a joke as in a cartoon so no taking this wrong ..make sure you get a great shot of dad when he slips and is handing upside down as in something the roadrunner's coyote would have happen :D just joking please
Great video.
great respect for your father. A very strenuous job. It's a good thing he's so slim.
You are all learning so much during this building process but I think your Dad’s quiet confidence is amazing. Happy thanksgiving to you all.
Happy Thanksgiving to you all!! So much to be thankful for. Not just Thursday, but everyday
Wonderful! you are ALL such practical people and work well together.
Great video. You guys are doing an awesome job. ❤❤❤❤❤
GREAT JOB!!!!!!!👏 ❤
You'll be putting the hay in in no time!!!
If you attach a 2x6 parallel to the post under the top plates where they join the joint will be a
lot stronger
Much to give thanks for from Kensington MN!

8 years ago we built a 30 x 60 ft green house with trusses for our tomatoes. You brought memories back.

Remarkable day. I am in continuing awe at the amount of knowledge and skill you all have
Happy Thanksgiving! Gobble until You Wobble! Like working 17.5'-20' in the Air. ❤😂❤

That was a great day's work
A all terrain lift would have been handy to use. Rent would be cheap for the time saved.
That a lot of work for a temporary structure and the foundation

Nice job! Progess must be gratifying for you all!

Safety is number one.
Good driving Gavin !! Really taking shape fast.
Awesome!
Looking great happy thanksgiving to SKS and Veggie Boys
Looking good 👍🏿
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL !!
Looking good
Top plates are meant to sit on top of the posts not be strapped to the sides
Hi Gavin
Great music Gavin.

Waving a hand from texas
Every time you say top plates I think metal lol
And soon youll connect them together. Still looks narrow to me.
So.. Its 30x100.
@eileenmcdonald1599 I understand the size. It just looks narrow.
Good to see your dad with harness. I cut out of a telephone pole but long sleeves, heavy pants and a sticker bush saved me. I did use push back to slow me down since I was buckled in.
Are those Dewalt clamps? If so are they worth the money? I have been looking at them.
You mean the “squeezes?” 😉
@ they are actually woodworking clamps.
We know. Now you may take your seat
To save some time and mearsuring put top plate on inside after the rafters Then all you would need to do is raise the plate up to rafter and it is guaranteed to be tight on both sides
Need some Amish help. Your barn would be done by sun down

Where I come from
Is your dad from down south Joel? We here have gotten the impression hes from the Oklahoma/Texas area.
Don't you need another board that goes horizontally on top of what you are calling the top plate? Those walls were really moving while you were putting things up. I don't think that will stop until you put up the end walls. It really will be a big structure!!

Don't cut your posts till you nail your trusses in because usually trusses nail to posts
