Man, the early 2000’s was wild. You don’t get these kinds of horror games anymore, where you don’t know the context of the game and you’re just thrown into the horror scenario to figure things out for yourself. Haunting Grounds was basically OUTLAST but 3rd person with fixed camera angles, and instead of the modern era with computers and laptops, Haunting Grounds puts you in an ancient castle with old alchemy laboratories. This game was a fun ride for me now, but I pretty much dismissed this game initially when I found it in stores, as I was also a scaredy cat when it came to horror games back then. I’m glad you enjoyed this game, as I’m excited to see what more of the old games that you’ll be revisiting.
as many people have pointed out in other videos on the game, haunting grounds has really excellent themes about women's autonomy especially reproductive autonomy. fiona (and other female survival horror protags, hello rule of rose...) are often laughed at for doing nothing but running and fainting, but really what can be done? youre a woman in a horrible situation, being literally hunted for your womb, and your attempts to fight back are futile, so all you can do is run and hide until it becomes too much and you lose your mind. they literally fight each other over fiona's womb for their own purposes, not caring about her or what becomes of her. daniella is quite literally said to be incomplete because she cannot bear a child, a sentiment that still resonates in today's society. great game, glad you covered it!
A male protagonist would be given methods or options to fight back, for example, whatshisdoodle in Silent Hill can fight the monsters, not just run away. Alan Wake can fight the monsters, not just run away. Etc. THAT'S what's wrong.
The story was great and the graphics were beautiful, but ugh, the gameplay was so frustrating. I remember rage quitting so many times because the boss kept spawning and chasing me, so I couldn't get a thing done. Excellent video, as always, Harry!
I remember this game! This one was also known for "jiggle" physics with setting changes and different outfits for Fiona. The fear aspect was a great challenge.
Hell yes a new Lore vid on a horror game I can never play! (And not for a lack of trying, but lack of funds~) Also, WHO in their right mind would EVER be cruel to Hewey!? Poor puppers!
This comment makes no sense. Philospher's Stone/Sorceror's Stone WAS a Western thing, because Americans were too dumb to know about the mythological concept of Flamel and his proposed stone.
Had this game back when it came out. Such an underrated gem. Thought it was a unique concept with the whole alchemy angle. Danielle to me was always the creepiest in my opinion. A homunculus that's after you for parts to make itself complete, that's beyond unsettling. Definitely a game that could use a remaster or spiritual successor
I adore this game. I still feel like it's underrated, even after all these years and the many videos that have popped up about it. I feel the same way about it as I do Rule of Rose- when you put the FRUSTRATING game play aside, everything else is top tier. I love the castle, I love how anxiety-inducing the chase sequences are, and I like the use of alchemy in the plot. Though the only thing that truly horrified me enough to really stick with me (in the right way like horror should) was how fucked up Riccardo was, his ending, and the dark realization of how bad it really is when you remember he and Fiona's dad are clones. Just...Wow.
Man, I'd love to see you cover Baroque. Its a very confusing game where dying actually advances the story. It was one of my favorite games when i was younger, but i unfortunately lost it and was never able to finish it. I remember i had the wii version but i think it was also a ps2 game as well.
Holy hells, that dude is played by Greg Ellis hahahahaha! I knew I recognized that voice! As a Cullen romancer in Dragon Age, this seriously is so damn funny.
Debilis means weak, mutilated/ deformed in latin , he's the reason I remember the game so well lol , also débile in french is often used as a slang ...
Oh, man! This was SO good, and well written! Once I learned WHO made it, I was like:' No f-ing wonder, Haunting Ground is so much like Devil May Cry," LOL! Games like Bloodborne and especially Lies of P, drew quite a bit of inspiration from this probably!
Cant believe i bought this game when i was younger for around $10 bucks.. it was a HUGE part of my childhood and now its finally being talked about & getting some recognition. Its like $300-$500 now to get a real copy of the game and disc holder, which is insane! SO glad i held onto it for all these years :')
I can't remember where I read this but I seem to remember that Capcom reused Hewie the Dog as an asset in the OG Resident Evil 4, assisting you in the El Gigante fight. Dunno if it's an explict reference between Capcom games or not
Imagine getting knocked up by your father’s clone… I rather not lol Edit:Daniella (I’m pretty sure) is a humongous. No womb. No taste. Etc etc. she seems artificial and ended as a failure.
I've been interested in the Haunting Ground for a while, as they've re-released Clocktower for modem audience I'm hoping they will consider re-releasing other games such as this.
Dude! I was watching gameplay of this game and now you did a video on it!! AWESOME! I hope you do more of the ClockTower series games, thank you for the video!!! (P.s why was the bad guy model hot at the end 😂😮also Hewie is best dogo!)
I remember this game very well, I still have it actually. The only thing I find funny throughout the entire game is Fiona's habit of always fainting, then her "fighting" style is needlessly kicking someone in the shin while doggie bites.
HG deserves a proper port to modern consoles or a remaster. It's such a unique and thought provoking game. I still own a copy I bought in 2007 for 25€. Runs great at 1080p with mods on my Odin 2.
I noticed at the beginning of the video that you said rare and expensive games for the ps2. While it's not a horror game, I was wondering if you would be interested in looking into the Koudelka/ Shadow Hearts series? Its one of my favorite series and unfortunately I never hear many people talking about it. I dont think it has enough background lore that it could be a lore and order video, but maybe a story explained or part of your retro vault series. I would love to have a video that me and many others can watch and spread awareness of this great series.
i have a favor to ask. on the 20th this month, S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 Heart of Chernobyl comes out. i am a HUGE fan of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R game franchise, and have been eagerly awaiting it's return! could you possibly make a video on the story of S.A.L.K.E.R and all of it's little interesting lore? covering S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly would also make me SO happy as i had a personal part in the making of that Fan Made Super Version of all the previous S.T.A.L.K.E.R games combined into one MASSIVE game with all the maps from the previous public release games being accessable. please, i would be forever thankful if you did this.
I'm glad this game is talked about even today 😊 but man, im sorry. I can't take Recardo's laughs seriously 😂 they sound so comical, like something comparable to a cartoonish villain twiddling his a curly mustache and shifting eyes back and forth with a dasterdly smile 😂
do anyone know a game where a lady is on a bed in the hospital and she talking to a ghost and is then teleport to a cave/mine looking place. it a old ps2 game
This dude needs to figure out how to do a sales pitch, for example, don't kidnap the person you are trying to get to give you something. Do not be super creepy when presenting your offer, maybe don't point a gun at the person you are trying to get to do something for you...I mean, just a thought LOL
Because of the mature themes this game has, it's very unlikely it would ever get a good remake. Capcom would tone it down so much for "modern audiences" that it would likely be too different and without as much terror from Fiona

Prey 2006 was wild too
A major complaint for Elden Ring shows why. Most just want to be told what's happening instead of actually getting lost in that world
It'd be called offensive and cancelled.
If anybody got the worst ending in the game.....i dont like you. Hewie is the bestest pup
The animations and cutscenes are incredible for a game this old.
Shame about the voice acting. And the scripting lmao
I loved the grape 🍇

Excellent video, as always, Harry!
The scene with her clone dad doing the ovulation test on her when she's unconscious is the creepiest part imo!
Outlast Tier Eddie Gluskin creepy.
I'm a simple guy, I see a dog in a thumbnail for a scary game, I immediately click to know if the dog survives or not.
That will be yes or no since it has multiple endings.
3 out of 4 endings is a yes.
I'm a simple guy, I see a hor female character in the thumbnail, I immediately click. 😋🥵

man thats a crazy line to say to a woman 😂😂😂😂
I was about to say the samething
Haunting Ground! Thank you for covering it! Still one of my favorite games of all time.
YES!!! I commented on a previous video that I'd really love to see this, and you did it!!! Major thanks from Sweden
It is not fair to be noticed and heard... 😢
Thank god you did, Haunting Grounds needs more love and attention!
@ it does!!! Amazing game, gives me a really specific feeling of dread, creeps and pure fascination

Another of my favorite survival horror games. I was excited to see you were going to cover this, as well. Looking forward to watching this one!
Haunting Grounds was so fascinating. It took me a bit, but the lore and game mechanic concept was interesting! Thank you for the Lore Video!
I will forever hate my self for selling my copy back in the day
You ain't alone in that buddy. We all make mistakes that are costly
The creepy story of Barbie and her sister puppy rescue
The Japanese: Demento
The West after the entire Philosopher's Stone debacle: Aaaa fk it Haunting Ground

FINALLY. I've been waiting for you to cover this one! I've already loved the clock-tower universe.
So excited! This game is great; can't wait to see your take on it.

Omg ive been waiting for this. Ive seen many videos on this game and I never tire of it. Thank you!
THANK YOU FOR THE HAUNTING GROUND COVERAGE IT'S IN MY TOP 10 SURVIVAL HORROR GAMES
The graphics are insane for 2005
The horror of being a woman type of horror.
I literally just watched an hour long video on this game but I’m always down for round two with harry.
Which one? Nitro rad?
@ dungeonchill
Holy hells, that dude is played by Greg Ellis hahahahaha! I knew I recognized that voice! As a Cullen romancer in Dragon Age, this seriously is so damn funny.
Fun fact: two discarded builds of RE4 were repurposed into other games. One was Devil May Cry. The other, Haunting Gound. Huey is the same dog in RE4
He chilling after the giant fight
