24 whole panels to tell the story, and they had to make one the bit where Ann's clothes are pulled off. Something for the dads who read the funny pages? 😂 The medium of comics is a bit like animation: you're not constrained by the limits of practical effects in live action, you can let your imagination go wild. I think that makes it more ironic that, in a couple of instances, Kong in the Gold Key comic looks a bit like a man in a gorilla suit... ... As compared to the Fantagraphics comic. I don't know Megaton Man too well, but here, Kong looks like _The Tick_ in a gorilla suit. 😂 This is really jarring alongside the attempt to depict the humans realistically. If I only saw a couple of panels without context, I'd assume it was a Mad Magazine style parody! Thanks Paperfinz, I had no idea about any of these adaptations. It's been eye-opening.
4:45 So the blue thing is a comic book coloring trick, the colors comic artists could use were limited, especially if you want the art to be readable. So blue was often subbed in for black. The also did this for Venom and Spider-Man 2099
Two other western adaptations Osamu Tezuka made were of the Disney versions of Bambi and Pinocchio, which you can still buy on Amazon JP. Both of them contain scenes that were not in the actual Disney movies. Pinocchio has stuff from the original source material, such as Pinocchio being hanged, but uses Disney's designs for some of the characters. I'm not familiar with the Bambi novel, so the extra scenes in his Bambi manga may have originated there as well.
All the characters and creatures from the Fantagraphics comic series look like something out of a Mad Magazine comic, with how exaggerated and cartoony they all look. I think that‘s why that art style doesn‘t work here. They don‘t look like they‘re meant to be taken seriously, like there should be some mean-spirited joke next to them. That sorta style belongs in a parody comic and not a serious adaptation.
Personally I like the Fantagraphics Kong design. I don't think you could have done it outside of a 90's black and white comic, but there's something charming about it.
2:37 Not many notice but there is a giant snake in that spider pit photo. Its on the right. Its slithering toward the giant spider. You can even see its mottled skin when you look between two of the spiders legs.
Thanks for the video. Can i ask what program you use to pan over the vertically oriented comic pages in this youtube wide format. I would like to make some similar comic videos and the programs i use dont have that feature. 😅
I agree, Kong's design in the 90s comics is really off-putting. Everything else looks fine, but he looks like an early Disney character, the way his face is designed. He feels really out of place.
@@geoffreyrichards6079 yeah, I can see that too. Tezuka's looks like classic Mickey. Don Simpson's Kong's face reminds me of one of the Dwarf's in Snow White. Haha
I am currently working on the first episode. There is a lot to go through for the first Godzilla film, so it will take some time, but the wait will be worthwhile. :)
The covers for the six issue Kong comics were done by William Stout. Look up his artwork, it's great!
He is a great artist. I think Dave Stevens (The Rocketeer) and Mark Schultz (Cadillacs and Dinosaurs) also contributed covers.
Here is the list of the cover artists.
#1=Dave Stevens
#2=Mark Schultz
#3=William Stout
#4=William Stout
#5=Mark Schultz
#6=Ken Steacy
Absolutely
He’s incredible I met him last year and got a bunch of books with his art in it and he signed it!!! Lovely fella

Superman's hair too right?

Ann Darrow looked like a transplanted 60s girl in the Dell adaption.
Great video man! Some really nice artwork in those comics especially the first short one

Don Simpson also did the X-rated Wendy Whitebread comic book (among others) so the sexualization of Anne and Jack make sense in that context.

I’ve only read the six issues comic , the 1968 comic , and the adaptation of the 2005 remake.
Ive read a handful of the comics really solid content!
The king Kong comic from Mexico are crazy
Especially the covers. And for some reason Kong had a shaved ass.

Great video! Thanks for this!
King Kong de Meriam Cooper et Ernest shoedsack est le plus grand film d aventure fantastique de tout les temps et pour l éternité.
George Wilson painted the cover for the 1968 version.
I know this isn't the 33 Kong but I still have my issue of King Kong 05 comic from Dark Horse. Sucks that it never went past the 1st issue.

Don Simpson has a very cartoony style.
I thought Tezuka’s design for Kong looked more Disney, to be honest.

When do you think you’ll release the first Road of Gojira video?
