I bought this FV150 mower engine off a commercial deck that was being scrapped...about 15 years ago. What an incredible engine. I use Baldwin car engine oil filters that cross reference...really good filtration.... If only Briggs and Stratton engines were built like this.....
Super machine, i bought a model without the oil filter, only issue i have is when i want to engage the blades, it often dies , no idea what could it be
I have a 1995 14SB that I got for FREE. Was sitting in shed for a while till I got it and all I did was drain the fuel system and carburetor and it fired right up! I definitely fell in love with it and appreciated it a lot more once I did research on it and found out how good they are. About to do a full overhaul on it and maintenance work very soon. Good video!
Hey! Just picked up a 14SB for free! Got ut running and it takes a little finesse to get the blade to engage but the self-propel isn't working. Do you have a video on repairs?
@stevemullaghy1625 hi there. I don't have a video on the transmission rebuild but have done it in the past. First check the cable ends to make sure it is not broken.
@Brandondood Greatly appreciate your response! My self-propel issue was the belt slipped off the pulley so glad it was a simple fix. I do have to slowly finesse the blade engagement and work ok on the throttle adjustment. This won't idle down but just shuts down.
Thanks again. This has the original carburetor on it and it was nasty! I agree that the jets aren't fully open. I may just buy a new carb but we'll see. Thanks again for your replies!
Good review, thanks for all of the tips. These appear to be one of those mowers like the older Lawn Boys that are sought after because thay don't make quality ones like they used to.
Do you have a video showing throttle plate assembly in detail? My center bolt broke and everything kind of fell down all at once making it difficult to figure out how all the linkage, spacers and springs all go back together on back side of plate. Thanks
Have a 14SB since new and it runs great . I am having trouble getting the drive to function properly, after taking drive wheels apart to clean and lube. Now when I turn right, it locks up . Turning left is fine.
Hi I liked your video on the 14 sb I personally use the JD JX86 and JA65 both are commerical green decks with the Kawasaki 150FV engines both will last forever be the last mower you will ever buy with using these they are a fantastic machine, and Id be interested in seeing a video tear down of one of these mowers and rebuild, would be great insight as to procedure of how you went about to successfully repairing it. Keep up the great videos. I subbed to your channel.
Yeah buddy! Bought my 14SE new in ‘91. It has electric start but I don’t use it anymore. Just too much trouble to keep the battery charged. I also installed the commercial oil filter kit on it when it was brand new. I did start getting a fairly loud whirrrrring noise when it’s just running (blade not engaged). It’s not engine related so I think it has something to do with the clutch although it still runs and mows like a champ. Only complaint I would have about it is that it wears out tires kind of quick. I’ve put several new sets of wheels on mine.
The silver deck John Deere mowers are great. I have a 12SB, and a 12PB with the two cycle Briggs and Stratton engines made by Komatsu. Great mowers, the Kawasaki engine is great as well, I just prefer two cycle engines.
I have a 1991 JD 15SB mower. It idles fine, but will not rev up at all when cable is moved to fast position. The hole indicator on the linkage plate lines up perfectly.
I would like to know how to remove the sloped plastic shield that covers the pulley/belt area at the rear of the deck. I was able to mostly loosen, but it won't come up over the metal "pipe" that pokes through it. I'm wondering if there is a screw/bolt (maybe inside that "pipe"?) that needs to be loosened... I would welcome any/all videos on maintenance/repair of this incredible machine.
I just got a 1991 John Deere 14SZ. It's essentially the same as yours but has a Briggs engine and the pull start is up on the push handle. I also do not think I have the blade clutch either. Mine has the metal mulch plate instead of the plastic plug.
that is awesome. the ones without blade clutch are 'zome start' i believe giving it the 'z' in the model number. finding the metal mulch plugs are super rare! good job. I love these mowers. does yours run well?
@@Brandondood It runs and cuts awesome! I wouldn’t say it cold starts on the first pull, but once going it hacks through even tall grass with ease, even with the drive engaged. You are correct, it is a Zone Start model.
How would you install the self-propelled push cable? My dad gave me his and the belt snapped I bought a new one off. Amazon comes in tomorrow. Could you get back to me?
Hi I have a 14sb that has a leaky fuel tank , got a fuel tank from a John Deere dealer would you be able to do a video on replacing the tank? Thanks in advance.
What do you set your gears on ( on the handle) to start it. Been having problems starting it. I was thinking I set them on the wrong thing. Just bought this mower used so it's not in the best shape. It doesn't have the ignition module.
the gear selection should not matter for starting if the power is not going to the wheels. i had difficulties on one of mine when the throttle cable was not pushing forward enough to get the carb into choke mode. start by checking the full range of the throttle, check spark plug gap and lastly it could be the carb jets possibly clogged. those tend to be my go-to items. good luck!
Hello Brandon, I saw your videos and they were very helpful. I have a John Deere 14sb, and I have a oil leak on the deck.. Do you have any idea where that might be coming from and how can I repair. Any part nr you can suggest that cure that issue.
Can you show a bit more detail on installing the oil filter? I know you said some have the option some don’t. I was looking to buy one and was interested if it had the capability.
Idk if you still pay attention to these comments but what is that tube on the side of the engine with that little plastic piece that you can see thru, mine leaks gas from that
Hello there!! the small see through piece is a fuel filter. yours may be cracked. they are super cheap at a hardware store or even a autoparts store. if you turn the fuel supply off, or clamp the tube, you can take the bad filter to find the right replaement. good luck!!!
@@Brandondood thank you! I see now that the tubing between the valve and filter is cracked, idk how I didn't see that before haha, but it will help me to know what it is called
I believe the air mixture screw on the carb may be blocked. As it gets a load on the engine getting the brake clutch applied it runs either too rich or lean to allow for proper firing. A carb clean may be all you need. Good luck!
There is a bolt holding a nut on each end. One is usually a O shaped bolt on bottom, the top is a adjuster nut on the cable I think. I can do a video if I get a day off soon :) hope that helps. Good luck!
very cool. my 14sb blew the motor during the last mow of last year. I will have to rebuild the kawasaki motor, I will hopefully get some good videos out on it :)
I have a John Deere dealer in my town yet they do not sell lawn mowers nor can they order them which makes no sense. Some of their lawnmowers I've seen are really nice but can only be purchased and picked up up north
I have jx85 and I just can’t figure out starting problem. my mower starts great when cold and after running for few hours and once stopped , then start agin it won’t start or will barley start. I have enough compression and spark, carb is new coil is new. I did adjust valves to correct adjustment. It always hard to start after its running and engine is hot. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should check on my engine it would be greatly appreciated.
Hello and thank you for stopping by. So I heard of another channel talking about that very issue not too long ago. with a hot engine, it starts to bog or become sluggish until it quits then cant be restarted until the motor is cool... that right there may be your spark plug. the spark plugs in these motors have a resistor inside of them. the resistor at cooler temps provides perfect spark, but when it heats up, it will struggle to perform. I hope that helps! le me know. B
I have a mower that does the same thing. It will run until I shut the motor off, then I can't get it to start again. Someone said it was vapor lock, but how to fix it I have no idea.
@@campbellpaul thanks for the input. another thing we should all check is the amount of fuel flowing into the carb. if the mower is pulling more fuel than is being resupplied into the bowl, it will run strong for a little while, then struggle to keep up with fuel. after sitting, it will slowly refill. maybe pull the hose off and see what kind of flow you have. be safe, use a good catch container and dont do this over grass. thanks all

😮 buy all them have one works use rest for parts
I have one just like it bought new in 1991 ... still works great as the day I got it.
Me too!
Me to lol still going dad got it 1989
I just picked one of these up for free! I was so excited but my mower mechanic not so much....😅 not sure why but I'm thrilled
I have one. Perfect condition. I’m not selling! I’ve had it since 1990. Serviced professionally every year, blades sharpened. I love it!

Mine does that too sometimes. My last 14sb I ended up opening the transmission and greasing everything. It helped a super lot
I have two of them, one with oil filter. Now I have to look to see if I can add one to the other.
