If you are interpreted read Alex & Me by Irene Pepperburg! They are using her method. As other Gray's joined the Stanford Lab Alex would correct the younger ones. When he did Not want to train he would give wrong answers, turn his back, just show No. When new Student's Interned, Alex would demand every thing he knew how to ask for putting the kids through their paces to see what they knew and if he could make them do stuff. He's also test to see if they would give extra treats. I have 2 Grays myself and they are 15 & 14. Mindblowingly smart and I am a huge fan here knowing students in their area are studying this. It is such important work and it is Way understudied, so many people still think Parrots only mimic. It will take this Generation to prove to the Scientific Community definitively what Gray's can do, how they feel and think.
@@annieseasidewow..you absolutely should start making videos on your greys too! I’m in love with this type of bird…I follow every single one I find online! I would just love to see and hear your two birds! What are their names?
He is a kid! Parrots kinda go straight from toddler to teen, and he's still in his puberty phase (as evidenced by him being a complete rapscallion lol)
I get that, I think. There are a number of reasons for Dalton and Tori to "train" in the presence of the birds. One, it normalizes the behavior. Everybody trains. Two, it gives the birds just a bit of a break. They can relax for awhile before getting back into it. Three, even though it's a break, there's still reinforcement going on. There's confirmation when a human "gets it right", and those birds are watching to see what happens when a human gets it wrong, too. And when a human or another bird gets it wrong, there's an opportunity to step in and "show off" by getting it right. There's probably more that I'm not thinking of; but it's evident that nearly every sound or movement in a session like this is relevant by way of training, reinforcement, reward, consequences, paying attention, bonding, and just plain fun sometimes.
@kellyrobinson17809:39 like when Apollo doesn't push the cart, but then Ophelia does and gets a snack, they did it to show Apollo what he has to do and that he will get a snack if he does it
@@ApolloandFrens I actually think he did once. And the spike ball was "ᵐᵉᵗal". (Admittedly it was a while back; Apollo hasn't said Plant in a few videos)
i have never been more overjoyed watching some birds earn snacks. they're all so adorable and seeing their interactions make my day 😭 you all look like you're having such fun!
My budgies used to do that. And so do people, when you think about it. I think that posture can be interpreted in at least a couple of ways, depending on the circumstances. It can be alarm, or heightened awareness/attention to something. It can be surprise, like "wtf??". It can be a gathering of focus, a preparation for some further action like self-defense, or running away. There may be more that's not occurring to me at the moment.
Well done, birds and humans! As a descendant of a long line of teachers, who kept going after last bell, tutoring at home while rearing their own children, and a former special ed paraprofessional myself, I enjoyed watching you discuss and evolve your teaching style. One thing we really paid attention to before each school year was minimizing distractions as best we could to enhance focus. In my autism classroom, the students were constantly moving, much like your bird kids. I know you're dealing with a different species, but still, very nicely done. 💖☮🙏
I liked the timing in 13:34, shpwing that Apollo knows that getting a question wrong means he has a chance to earn a snack, but then proceeds to give the exact same wrong answer 😂
Paper is wood and wood is trees, trees are plants. Plants are plants is a plant I guess. 🤷♀️ but I guess we are making a distinction between Thick Wood and Thin Wood being Wood and being paper despite both also being plants so at the same time A plant is a plant but NOT a plant. 😵💫
"Hey Apollo, you wanna earn a pistash?" *furious nodding* "what color is this?" "RED!" "Yes Apollo, this is color red!" *oh boy, do I get a pista..* "Three more questions!" What a rip off
Think model-rival could be more gripping for Apollo if the steal resulted in the reward! For example - four things for a pistash, Tori. Tori gets number four wrong and Apollo gets it right - and gets the snack for the fourth correct answer - that's a proper steal. He cashes in Tori's first three correct answers. Might even encourage more intense focus on the numbers...
And iron sights. Implied is, "vs. optics". A scope could make a finger more accurate, but a little more difficult to maneuver. You'd need custom gloves, wider pockets, and you'd have to be careful reaching for things so you don't bump the scope and knock it off zero, or inadvertently snag objects with it. And you'd have to drill and tap holes for the mounts. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that fingers are just better off with iron sights...
I can't wait to buy the book you'll write about the Model Rival 2.0 theory (or something like that!). I love that you're interested, open to experimenting and you're keeping the birds engaged. It's great watching the two of you develop you're scientific minds.
Hmmm I think Tori is right, despite the rock ball being nearby he didn’t even glance at it when you asked him to touch the plastic ball. Perhaps your smart little guy may have decided since you don’t toss the rock ball around then it isn’t a ball despite the shape. You guys have so much fun with your babies, I’m glad you all came through the hurricane season safely. We lost a big red mango tree that almost crushed our house, the live oak caught the tree.
Have you tried calling the cloth rag, ‘fabric’? It’s a word that is very different to the word sock. I notice that the word cloth is quite like the word sock. Fabric is two syllables and ends in a c, which Apollo likes to say! Then you can say, this is a sock - it’s made of fabric. This is a shirt - it’s made of fabric, etc. ❤
I want a bird phone! 🤣 I find it fascinating how Apollo understands when you’re not talking to him but to someone else, and he stops answering questions and moves away. That seems to indicate a complex understanding of communication. This was a really interesting and entertaining video and I would love to see more like this!
Bird phone: Lift bird to "phone" position. Speak into bird. Release bird. Bird flies to recipient. Recipient holds bird in "phone" position. Bird speaks message. Recipient replies to bird, and releases. Bird flies to originator, speaks reply. Repeat as needed. For texting, attach small notes to bird's leg, proceed in similar manner as above.
I really appreciate how you're talking/working through things on camera, like how to maintain the model-rival while having the birds take turns. I have two GCCs who basically can't be separated but one opts into training more often and wants to train for longer, and thus is further ahead than the other, so we're also navigating the multi-bird training scenario. In my case, the bird further ahead will bite me or his buddy if he's not rewarded "properly" in his mind, so getting them to take turns is... difficult 😅
This would be a great long term biology experiment on cognitive development in animals over time and I would love to see a paper on how things have gone so far and a projected end result!
I wonder if sometimes when Apollo answers wrong, it's because he is thinking in his head about a different object, or his eyes are focused on something else momentarily. In that case, it would be mostly a case of attentional orientation. As for Tori and Dalton.. well, they did good and earned some snacks. Good job Tori and Dalton.
Loved the competitive swap. Seeing all 3 attentions once commanded was pretty cool they were all super engaged from "BIRDS BIRDS". Thought this model/rival technique will be really cool to incorporate with our tiel who tries to talk quite a lot and has lots of cute tricks, and can build on a lot of our existing training and take things up a level or two!
i love seeing y’all figuring out how to do these things efficiently. have y’all looked into discreet trial training? it’s usually used in ABA therapy- it’s basically what you are doing in this video. a lot of the time people will start with “touch ball” and the only option is ball, and then move up from there!
