  • B B... Artist: TADAO CERN - Los Angeles Balloon Museum
Sometimes two, sometimes many more, the BB series comes in a variety of formats. Here, some fifty silver balloons are grouped together, squaring the space with symmetrical, drawn lines. In this room of mirrors and stroboscopic lighting effects, the many reflections confuse our landmarks. The boundaries between installation and space become blurred. Our compass goes astray. There’s no more top, no more bottom. Tadao Cern’s work is reminiscent of the obsessions of the minimalist artists of the 1960s and 70s, such as repetition, the use of monochrome colors and symmetry. Here, however, he makes a surprising shift by incorporating sounds from nature into his installation. The contrast between the visual and the aural reinforces the feeling of disorientation.
