Long time no see youtube! I wish I could upload more frequently but I just got a new job a couple weeks ago and it has been taking up all of my time! I will return to a more regular upload schedule once I get used to the stress of my new job. I hope you guys understand!
Bud, congrats on your new job. Your doing a great job having fun playing with bikes. keep it coming. You gave me the urge to get myself a oldie. A 1980 Honda CB650 with 13000 Kilometers on and I'm going to cafe it up. It's not the 70's favorite one to turn in to a cafe but it will be alright for me.
Dude!!! I mean GoldGuy. Your heart is there and i give you much credit for it, but man you've got to learn to do things the right way. RUclips is a great resource on how to get your old Honda running again btw....good luck
Im watching the video and commenting as this goes on. 1. Don't coat the tank. Just use acids if there's much flakes you could put sand and Diesel in the tank and spin it and shake it for some time and then put acid in. The coatings usually start to chip in some point
Somebody else who works on motorcycles once said " If it's worth doing, it's worth over doing" maybe you should take another look at those carbs and adjust/sync the float height again. The float can really effect performance on these old Honda's.
You diserve much more subscribers man! I bought my first motorcycle this year, a Honda cb125K twin from 1975. I made it start, but have some problems getting it running good. I have only been fixing 2stroke mopeds before so little tricky for me to get the hang of 4stroke, but im getting there. Would be fun to see you fix a small bike on the channel like a Honda 125 project! Much love from Sweden keep it up!
carb sync only affects idle smoothness and is the last thing you want to do after plugs filter adjustments everything. float height is relatively important. an inline fuel filter is a great thing. half your carb problems are usually in the ignition so make sure the points are proper if it has them and the timing between sides is correct. a service manual is almost necessary to know stuff like what the float height is suppose to be. and proper timing/dwell adjustments.
Great one GG!.. I've would have switched all of the needles and valves in the carburetors.. Don't know these carbs, but you'd might want to check them out from the top as well.. possible some gunk and stuff built up in there.? I think we've all been there.. Putting them carburetors on and off again,.. Several times,.. before we've got past the trouble.. Thanks for a great video, and no stress, it's real life first, right!..
I've missed your vids... Keep them coming. Great job on the 550 , just take your time on the cleaning. You won't have to take the carbs off so many times.
I learned the hard way with my GS550 just replace the needles. You’ll think you’re done and it will piss gas on the side of the road with no way to fix it. With a rejet and sync that’ll be a sweet running bike. Also it seems like the older slide carbs tend to foul plugs much faster especially when one cylinder is dumping fuel into a cylinder like yours was so replace those bad boys. Can’t wait to see how this turns out!
@@Clarkejt112 absolutely if you jet correctly, 1 up on the mains? Fun fact, the airbox lid was missing, I just made one,out of tin, works good, good luck man
A lot of variables to make the bike run well but what helped my cb500 out the most when it came to carb issues was cleaning out the emulsion tubes. Commonly overlooked components of the carburetors. But a lot of gunk can end up in there. Look into that and see what you find!
That bike will be running hella lean with those filters on, that’s why it’s not picking up on revs that great and runs better with choke on cause it’s getting more fuel
Like always very well done video! But as many others are saying, always clean the gas tank as well as the carbs when working on a bike thats been sitting. Also- If a needle seat is a bit gunked up i take a q-tip on the end of an electric drill with sole polishing compound and polish it up with that. Works great
Hey Gold Guy I'm a vintage Honda mechanic that specializes in these four cylinder bikes and I even have 3 of these in the shop now getting rebuilt. I need to point out some mistakes that had me yelling watching this video. Get rid of that old fuel out of the tank first of all then get new seals for the float bowls and don't use gasket maker. You need to set the float heights correctly and not just start bending tabs or the bike will never run the way you want to. Also you never seated the carburetors back onto the boots correctly. The boots should fit flush to the carb body. Also I'm not sure if in another video if you checked the valve clearances or the points? You should have not have gone with those filters and gone with UNI pods. They are perfect fit and no rejetting.
These carbs have air screws somewhere. Calf. model bikes have brass plugs covering them up so you can't mess with them. Drill them out and adjust them. Most bikes come detuned from the factory. Also need to sync the carbs with a vacuum gauge. Keep up the great content!
That's definitely not all 4 firing ..... That popping is misfire. You need to check float height with clear fuel line on the over flow port and loop it up along the side of the bowl so you can see how full the bowls actually are. Also you need to synch up those carbs properly, get the right tool and hook it up to the ports that are usually capped off on the manifolds or on the carbs and bottle feed them. You have to synch up carbs by pairing 1 and 2, then 3 and 4 and then the center one in between carbs 2 and 3 will pair both carb set's. Those older CR round slide carbs take a little bit of patients cause not only is there adjustments to synch the butterfly valve's but there is also adjustments under those top caps on each carb to adjust slide and needle heights.
Sounds good. You should check the specs for proper float height. If the needle leaks after float adjustment...well...you know what you should do. New needle and seat sets are a good idea.
I have a yamaha y80,it still has the original carb on it,till now the bike still runs great but the carb is so old that the threads that you screw on the bowl, fuel drain screw, main jet and pilot jet are cracking and stripping..
You need a carb sink so that the carbs are all creating the same amount of vacuum when the slides open to all cylinders. And I think I saw one or two bad exhaust gaskets (smoke escaping from between the header and the cylinder)
I think you have an electrical problem somewhere that's not letting it rev right. Sounds better but not quite right. Even with the choke on, it revved higher but still sounded off.
You need to put some new clean fuel in it also put a inline fuel filter on the fuel line to catch all the junk coming from the tank also synch the carbs and adjust your idle and mixture screws then you should be good to go
Hey man great video. I could use your advice if you don’t mind? I bought an older 84 Yamaha Virago XV700. It has no fuel line off from the tank or any lines off the carbs. I just want to make sure I don’t get the wrong size
Look at your carb bowls. You got them flip-flopped. The drain screws are angled & should all point out, but now they all point in. I wouldn't be surprised if you mixed up your floats, which would set your float heights way off. Slow down & look twice before you do something. Do some reading on forums.sohc4.net. You have a lot of learning to do.
were you specting to hear if there was fluid inside rubber floats,? really? haha, also, as the other folks said below, it's still running pretty shitty, carbs out of synch and float heigh out of spec's and pls don't use gasket maker on the float bowls again, that shit will go everywhere and the jets are gonna clog again, just put the rubber gasket....

I worry about you. You are playing in enclosed spaces with CO. Get some glasses on and move the bike outside or put a fan in there. It looks like you are under the house, those fumes go upstairs. Take care of those lungs, and eyes. You have two of each for a reason. Otherwise, great to see the bike is moving along! Looking forward to seeing it run with a clean tank and fresh gas.
Hey man I appreciate your channel and your energy, but just so you know the reason most mechanics where gloves now, is all that cleaner, and gas etc absorbs into your skin, and then blood stream, and then is filtered through your organs. A really, really bad idea to be cleaning with crap directly into your skin. Wish you the best.

Did u just clean carbs and run the old contaminated fuel through it???
I was thinking the same thing.....
Marco I’ve done it me self getting eager to get it running and lost concentration
Also invest in a carb vacuum sync tool. They're easy to use and make a huge difference.

Sky B they are wonderful bikes. Very light and nimble and plenty fast with some basic mods and rejetting
@@Clarkejt112 I just did a gs550 E,but just kept the stock airbox even though the airbox is a bitch to put back on.

Good luck in your move looks like you got a running hopefully you have room for the bikes at your new place
Great progress. Just wonder why the pods if it's a restoration! Then you wouldn't have to rejet
I'm a firm believer that most bikes run better with the airbox...
Restoration or not, airbox is better in everything but looks.
I owned 500/4 in the 70's and trust me that ain't running on all 4 cylinders at all.

Those springs in the bowl is there to prevent the jets from falling out. As you said, they are not threaded.

There could be carbon build up that is blocking the piston from doing a full rotation.

adjust the float height properly, new fuel, carbjetkits.com calculator go up a couple jets for exhaust and intake mods, seafoam, and carb sync.
