Did this trail 8 yrs ago...made a few mistakes too, like an afternoon hike in early August and not enough water. Going down was fine...coming back up, not so much. So hot and for awhile you're walking on lava which has been baking in the sun all day. Made it back up to the car with some early signs of heatstroke. Be careful out there.

Jeep is gone now! We got it out! Some local ranchers dragged it out with a couple of trucks, and the county hauled it away! :D
Trail is looking great! We continue planting native species: milo, kukui, kou and kā‘e‘e. I have a wiliwili I'm growing, and maybe one day I will plant that as well!
It has been so rewarding to mālama this trail, learn about it, and help people. If every hiker brought a small 25¢ bottle of water to give away to those who need it, we'd have a LOT less rescues on this trail.
    Aloha mai kākou!

You guys are great. I appreciate all the updates that you share with us. We just got to Hawaii Island and surf is really up. Went to Hapuna and was shocked how the beach has shrunk. I know it will be back. I'm confused about the paid parking. Only one kiosk at the very end of the parking lot with no signage for what to do. What the heck??? If you don't know to pay, do they fine you?

I did that trail July 1996. I remember needing to use a stick to knock down mats os spider (mostly crab) webs. Are spider webs still an issue? Does the really big Morey Eel named 'Oscar' live in the reef just off of the monolith monument?

Isn't that an unspoken trail rule? The first one down the trail in the morning removes the spider webs for those who follow. xD
Wish we were there in 96 to make sure you had enough water.
Never heard of this Oscar. We call that a mo‘olelo (story). Sounds like a good one. :D

Coming in February. When’s the quietest time at Capt Cook would you say?

      Weekdays

Early morning is quietest. Basically as soon as the sun rises.
