    I have lived in Guanacaste for 10 years. One thing to keep in mind, living so isolated may have it's crime issue via home property thefts. The police in Costa Rica, well let's just say law enforcement for property crimes, is not a priority. The assumption is, Gringos can afford to replace expensive items!

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад +2

      Everywhere you go, you have to address security! This home is in a community with a guard patrolling on motorcycle at night, the owners have cameras, and most importantly, ***there aren't easy-to-carry valuables left vulnerable! Crime here is based 100% on opportunity - thieves gravitate to tourism beaches where many wallets, passports, laptops and phones will be left exposed in cars. Or they focus on homes they know well, where they've seen tourists check in with expensive gadgets, often to leave doors open at night. If you are not low-hanging fruit, and if you don't offer a great economic opportunity to someone who wants to make quick money, you are generally in good shape.

    Know Lagarto is not a good beach but the house is nice, not for me, though but hope it sells.

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад

      I'll be honest, Lagarto is not the best for sunbathing or finding a mai tai, but it's an undiscovered paradise... Rather than going to the beach right in town, I would go down the road a bit and go to the beach called "Boca del Venado" that's absolutely an idyllic spot. (Just north of Lagarto.)d

    NOT TO BE CRITICAL - but the house has NO Costa Rican charm ! Looks more like a "tract home" here in Florida ! We lived in the San Ramon de Alajuela area for 5 years, and our home was FULL of beautiful hardwood cabinetry, ceiling, and trim work. And windows that opened to let in the FRESH AIR !

    Real estate is the most conspicuous from of wealth. Subject to taxation, regulation and confiscation.

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад +1

      I've been trying to figure out how to respond to this for a while; it's a pretty general statement. Couldn't you say real estate is also the oldest and perhaps most important form of wealth; before humans had private property individuals had their own spot in the cave or tent...

    • @RobertWilliams-mb9jb
      @RobertWilliams-mb9jb 3 года назад

      @@CostaRicaMatt I get it, Matt. You're in the real estate SALES business, and my comment is contrary to the way you earn your bread and butter. But I have been in the real estate OWNERSHIP business that is quite different from the real estate SALES business. You don't have any capital at stake.

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад +1

      As I mentioned, my complaint was that you made a very general statement. Thank you for the context behind it. Yes, if you earn a living owning real estate, rather than selling it, it's important to understand that your wealth/capital is very conspicuous.
      I would say I have a stake in the value of real estate as a store of wealth because my wife and I own our home and spend almost every extra dime we have improving it.

    Not a chance this house is over 1300sqft as stated. I would think closer to 900sqft. The living/kitchen is exceptionally small. As are the bedrooms? Are you counting outside space also? Nice house, but very small, nonetheless.

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад

      I am willing to admit I do not think the home is 1300+sf air-conditioned space. In Costa Rica the usual standard is to include all roofed space and I'm sure we did include the porch that has a table as well. I will look for the source of the error; if in the video I say "over 1300 sf of construction" then it includes the pool as well as the porch.

    • @CostaRicaMatt

      I am sure you made this comment with incredible background knowledge on the province. So pardon me if I sound like I'm lecturing you, really, I'm sure this is something you already know. I'm sure you're familiar with the fact that this land actually belonged to Chorotega indigenous people who were originally decimated by the same diseases that swept through the new world starting in the 16th century. And how Guanacaste had been sparsely populated at the turn of the 20th; how the government had redistributed land to allow for cattle ranching, which subsequently destroyed the ecosystem; how cattle ranching lost viability as a way of life in the 80s and 90s; how vast amounts of ranch land turned into secondary forest; how rural communities in this area now depend on any kind of tourism, construction or natural resources for their jobs; how the economy currently protects natural resources far better than the economy of 30-40 years ago; how "poor people" in these communities are poor because international economic integration creates such disparity; how taking away this development would leave the local community looking for jobs further away from their homes; etc.

    • @CostaRicaMatt
      @CostaRicaMatt  3 года назад +2

      Also, please name every food you eat and I would love to discuss the ethics and impact it has here in Costa Rica vs. what kind of employment small homes like this generate. I live in a community where the happiest, most stable families are those that are able to have permanent employment with people who pay them well and also provide for benefits. There's a pool cleaner, security guards, housekeepers, on and on, and the house essentially allows an acre of land to stay forested. Compare that to an agro-scape created to provide sugar, beef, citrus, vegetables, on and on and on to foreign markets. Homes like this are part of an economy that's currently providing employment where people were absolutely left in the dust when their government and agricultural failed them.
