  • In this video produced by Dezeen for Holcim, Norman Foster introduces a housing prototype for displaced people that the Norman Foster Foundation developed with the building materials company and unveiled in Venice during the launch of the Architecture Biennale.
The Essential Homes Research Project is a housing concept designed to sustainably provide rapidly assembled housing for people displaced by natural and manmade disasters.
The prototype was designed by the Norman Foster Foundation and realised by Holcim using its materials.
The homes have been designed to offer a durable alternative to tent shelters in order to withstand the elements. They can be built on-site in order to expedite construction during emergencies.
The project responds to the fact that displaced people often end up living in temporary accommodation for more than a decade, and require homes that offer safety and dignity.
"Disasters lead to the need for instant accommodation and camps - mostly tented - offering scant protection from the elements," Foster said in an exclusive video interview with Dezeen.
"What if there would be something that would be more permanent, more durable, offering greater protection from the elements, but which could be realised very quickly?"

I like this way of thinking! Architecture should be effective. Sometimes architecture is really expensive, but for many people in the wourld it should be cheap. In other way it should be ecological. And of course it should be beautifull. So, like this project.

Great idea. One year later, is this just a marketing exercise or a project put into practice.

Thanking Sir Norman Foster, Urgency On-site units for a populations in crisis. Making the calls, as needs are met for some. The needs are great as some driven on outskirts, marginalized with no place to sit or land. Remembering my sibling as VP awarded prior to Covid 19. Meeting the needs above all as those shut out countries and knocking. Above an oracle congregation! Familiar w suffering needs to respond above all else. Evelyn Ramos artist -through osmosis.

They don't show the bathroom. It seems the space is wasted being too minimalistic

The homeless pkpulation in USA is growing. I have been thinking of matching State Land Grants with development of a village. Would also have employment on site and wrap around Human Service Assistance based on individual needs. Can u tell me when this will be available?

This could be adapted with open source design and local material adaptability

Why all these ideas are only seen on exhibitions and not in real life for real refugees
