I find it amazing that bass player Michael League founded this band in music school... because he didn't "make the cut" to get into ANY of the school's ensembles.
That Jazz program at the Tx school is one of the best and hardest programs to get into. He just hadnt matured into his musical being at that time. He learned is craft well, now it really shows!!!!?
Michael, a couple of things. The bass player, Michael League, is Snarky Puppy, it’s his band, he does almost all of the arranging and at least half of the writing. Don’t worry about being over your head. Chatting with a couple of the guitar players after a show and they both said when they joined the band they didn’t think they were good enough to play with Sput Searight the main drummer at the time.
Check out Sputs new band Ghost-note. Mononeon is killer on bass. When I saw him live my jaw was on the floor. I looked around and everyone else had the same look.

I like how you say the harmonies are "like a machines doing it" because a machine literally IS doing a lot of them. Jacob's keyboard plays his voice at different pitches, he uses it in all of his live shows and honestly it's one of maddest things to see live!

Jacob worked with MIT engineers to develop the Harmonizer. It takes input from his voice and keyboard and outputs a harmony of his voice. I think this occurred in his early 20s. You can hear him turn it off and then on in the song.

There's a video out there where Jacob explains his understanding of harmonies and melodies. From micro tones to semi tones,intervals etc.. How they interplay and how he sees them. It's beautiful. He's a genius. He explains highly complex theory in very simple terms. He just has a mastery of melody and harmony.
One of the [many] things I find mind-blowing here is how seeming digressions into off-script noodling resolve into various band members interjecting perfect bits in EXACTLY the right places - obviously there's nothing AT ALL random about the "improvisations" of the principals!

Jack Alterman no its was completely intentional. The song is "in a Bleak midwinter" and he modulates to a quarter tone key (I think G half flat but im probably wrong). David bruce has a video about it and its incredible how it happens because its almost impossible to tell that he changes key.
I’d really recommend checking out Larnell Lewis’s performance on Zildjian Live. It is incredible and the backing band is just as good, but it’s more easily digestible and drum focused (obviously).

I think whoever is running this just said yes to anyone who showed interest in the band and masterfully exploited everyone’s talent in leading all the members. So cool! Vocals are off the charts! This was recorded in New Orleans. Big Ed Lee is the Souzaphone (notice mic cord in the bell) player who, imho, gets mad props for keeping up with Micheal League on a tune in 14/4. All the contributing musicians get their parts on midi file from M. League (including horn players) and THAT is the real testament to how absurdly talented this group really is. The precision with which this group performs each and every time absolutely knocks me out... I am in complete awe of their individual abilities, let alone their combined ones.
The man who's running it is the bass player, Michael League. He's the bandleader, main arranger and composer, puts together the GroundUP Music Festival, which in turn is named after the record label that he runs, which is named after their 5th album.
The other drummer is Robert "Sput" Searight. Also a beast, currently running the group GhostNote. If you watch the Zildjian Live videos others have mentioned, Sput is one of the keyboard guys.
Mindblowing that Sput not having his travel papers in order for the «We Like It Here» sessions became the launch pad for Larnell Lewis to become a RUclips sensation!

Jacob programmed that tiny upper keyboard to be a voice harmonizer (sort of a super talk box lol) mostly because he does solo performances where he loops and and has to sing all of the parts. I think that keyboard can add something like 10 harmonies to his voice. Jacob is all about harmony, in addition to being able to play almost every instrument. Michael League is the bass player and leader of Snarky Puppy, it is Michael’s baby. This one is a Jacob arrangement though. Jacob and Cory have a number of performances together on RUclips. You should check out Cory performing “Billy Jean”, “Purple Rain”; and some of the stuff he’s done with Vulfpeck.
I could be wrong but from what I understand Jacob and a buddy built a vocal harmonizer machine that basically replicates his voice into whatever notes he plays on the keyboard which is why you see him playing that specific keyboard at the same time he is singing to create those massive and complex harmonies. The background signers are doing an amazing job keeping up with it and making it sound more natural instead of "talkboxy". Musical genius' even in building hardware let alone arrangement. Love your videos. I'm a new subscriber and recently signed up for the online guitar lessons.
Thank you so much for this! Jumping on the bandwagon for more Jacob Collier. Even though he music is rarely guitar centric there's a severe lack of educated musicians reacting to his content and I think I can speak for many when I say we're desperate to have more company to share his prowess with.

Yes great tune and arrangement and the thing that is often overlooked is the stunning and unobtrusive video work and the insanely beautiful mix. Unfortunately the genius sound mixer that worked with Snarky Puppy passed away far too young.
Don't quote me but i've heard that the "other" drummer is/was the original drummer for Snarky Puppy, Larnell joined his first session as a sub at last minute & learnt the tunes on the plane over to the session a day or two before.

Michael, your reaction is normal when hearing this ... Jacob is not of this planet, this was from 2014, he is so much better now and seeing him live is amazing. I was at this Family Dinner Vol 2, one of the most amazing musical experiences I have ever had. Michael League is the leader/bass player and the other drummer is Sput the regular drummer for Snarky. You need to check out the entire DVD of Family Dinner Vol 1 & 2
Daniela Ortiz actually 20 ... saw him live during his one man tour and he said he had written the tune on the way to New Orleans for the Family Dinner Vol 2 session, he said he wrote it in 7/4 and 5/4 to see how Snarky Puppy would handle it, well it didn’t phase them at all ... Jacob recorded his version of the tune on his first CD, In My Room, which he plays all the instruments and of course all the vocals, you should check it out when you get a chance ... 👍

I've listened to a few tracks like In the Real Early Morning and Flintstones but I really just want to sit with headphones and experience the the whole album. I did that for djesse vol. 2 and was moved and blown away all at the same time- I just felt the whole range of emotions you feel when listening to music. this was over a year ago so maybe you have been told this. i noticed in the comments that people acknowledge that Michael League is the leader/mind behind Snarky Puppy. my comment is about the vocals done by Jacob. Jacob is using something like a "vocoder". the other singers are singing I'm sure but the sound Jacob gets and the tight harmonies are because of the vocoder. when he's playing the electric keyboard his mic gets split, one part goes to the mains and the other part goes through the keyboard which is driving the vocoder. so what he plays on the keyboard is what you hear. (I don't know if he's using a vocoder or something like it but...). his use of vocoder live is wonderful and fun. I love your reaction videos.

Michael League (bass) is a beast. He's the composer (mostly) for snarky puppy, so he can keep up with the changes. Although this song definitely has some JC harmonies that ML might not have added.
Jacob Collier wrote the song. His version of it is on his album In My Room. This arrangement was heavily worked on between Jacob and bass player/composer League. It was loosely, arranged with moments left for free expression. I think only such a Contacts group of musicians could pull this off the way it was. Jacob’s original version is fun, but this is phenomenal.

Jacob programmed that tiny upper keyboard to be a voice harmonizer (sort of a super talk box lol) mostly because he does solo performances where he loops and and has to sing all of the parts. I think that keyboard can add something like 10 harmonies to his voice. Jacob is all about harmony, in addition to being able to play almost every instrument.
Michael League is the bass player and leader of Snarky Puppy, it is Michael’s baby. This one is a Jacob arrangement though.

I could be wrong but from what I understand Jacob and a buddy built a vocal harmonizer machine that basically replicates his voice into whatever notes he plays on the keyboard which is why you see him playing that specific keyboard at the same time he is singing to create those massive and complex harmonies. The background signers are doing an amazing job keeping up with it and making it sound more natural instead of "talkboxy". Musical genius' even in building hardware let alone arrangement. The other drummer is “Sput” Robert Searight. The dude is phenomenal, he was BORN in the pocket. He was the original drummer for Snarky Puppy.

Jumping on the bandwagon for more Jacob Collier. Even though he music is rarely guitar centric there's a severe lack of educated musicians reacting to his content and I think I can speak for many when I say we're desperate to have more company to share his prowess with.
Also in regards to the MICHAEL LEAGUE banter I'm just impressed you can so clearly tell he's in charge :)

Yes great tune and arrangement and the thing that is often overlooked is the stunning and unobtrusive video work and the insanely beautiful mix. Unfortunately the genius sound mixer that worked with Snarky Puppy passed away far too young.
Don't quote me but i've heard that the "other" drummer is/was the original drummer for Snarky Puppy, Larnell joined his first session as a sub at last minute & learnt the tunes on the plane over to the session a day or two before.

Michael, you’ve really helped me dig into countless artists that I’ve heard countless times, but didn’t listen critically to... from Huey Lewis to Snarky Puppy! I get a sense that some musicians create universes. They tune into the laws of physics and they build entanglement and collapse. They dance around rings and moons and they let us explore with them.

Michael, your reaction is normal when hearing this ... Jacob is not of this planet, this was from 2014, he is so much better now and seeing him live is amazing. I was at this Family Dinner Vol 2, one of the most amazing musical experiences I have ever had. Michael League is the leader/bass player and the other drummer is Sput the regular drummer for Snarky. You need to check out the entire DVD of Family Dinner Vol 1 & 2

Daniela Ortiz actually 20 ... saw him live during his one man tour and he said he had written the tune on the way to New Orleans for the Family Dinner Vol 2 session, he said he wrote it in 7/4 and 5/4 to see how Snarky Puppy would handle it, well it didn’t phase them at all ... Jacob recorded his version of the tune on his first CD, In My Room, which he plays all the instruments and of course all the vocals, you should check it out when you get a chance ... 👍

I've listened to a few tracks like In the Real Early Morning and Flintstones but I really just want to sit with headphones and experience the the whole album. I did that for djesse vol. 2 and was moved and blown away all at the same time- I just felt the whole range of emotions you feel when listening to music. My face listening was probably like Cory Henry's stank face during one of JC's solos here haha. So glad Tiny Desk introduced me to this guy last month

my comment is about the vocals done by Jacob. Jacob is using something like a "vocoder". the other singers are singing I'm sure but the sound Jacob gets and the tight harmonies are because of the vocoder. when he's playing the electric keyboard his mic gets split, one part goes to the mains and the other part goes through the keyboard which is driving the vocoder. so what he plays on the keyboard is what you hear. (I don't know if he's using a vocoder or something like it but...). his use of vocoder live is wonderful and fun. I love your reaction videos.
