    Great video Doc! This is the prescription everybody needs to hear. Wildlife Management needs to be part of the deer manager’s montra.

    Thanks for giving me some entertainment while I’m stuck in this Texas snow storm! We could really use some fire on your roads right now

    I always enjoy seeing a new video from you. So much great information for someone, like myself, who is just beginning to manage a lease. Prayers for your mom.

    Here In new England, the Woodlands are absolutely infested with ticks and is in desperate need for prescribed burns. But with all the activists and poorly motivated state wildlife workers ,we will never see such a thing. It would not be a easy task in many areas due to human encroachment, but could be done. Its amazing that Connecticut,( state currently in) the deep make at the top of the pay scale and do probably some of the least amount of work compared to other states in area. We are given little to no recreational opportunities and rather poor hunting and fishing experiences. I realize it's not all " there fault " but is frustrating when all our licenses fo is go up and quality go down.

      Mountain - Wow - I'm sure getting good habitat management completed there is tough.

    I have 5 acres of CRP ground that I own. Surrounded by ag fields, and a couple 20-30 acre hardwoods that I dont own. Can you do a video about comparing smal CRP ground vs food plot / cover ground?

      Freedom - We'll try to cover that subject.

    I just got acres of pines thinned with a forestry mulcher. Is now the best time to burn? will I have cover by November? If not, what should I do? I can send pics of how it looks now

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  2 года назад

      Devin - I don't know the situation, but typically the residue left by a mulcher is too close to the ground and to packed to burn. You may need to wait a year. How tall are the remaining pines? If their limbs are low, a fire could damage them.

    Grant, What happens to the Dogwoods and Other Native structure? Thanks for the video.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад +1

      John - All the native shrubs were bred were adapted to fire long ago. It's important to remember that almost none of our timber stands now look like what the early explorers and settlers reported. Some shrubs will be damaged or terminated by fire, but certainly not all.

    Do you do any plantings of switch grass at the proving grounds?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад +1

      Ryon -The areas where we cut and burn cedar has a great native seed bank so we don't have to plant any natives!

    Grant, what's the best value in a control fire "drip torch" you've found and can recommend? Would like one to use for burning my NWSG plots if I can get one for a good price.

    Fire would have naturally occurred in the growing season in closed canopy forest, correct?Also would a fire girdle more trees in the growing season or the dormant season?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад +1

      Gavin - it's very tough for fire to spread in a closed canopy forest during the growing season east of central Kansas. Fire will harm trees easier during the growing season as the sap is up and it can boil.

    I purchased 50 acres in Southern Indiana back in summer. The majority of the property is planted in Timothy grass. There’s also around 5-7 acres of Johnson grass. If I do a burn in the next 2 months before spring green up, will I get the early successional growth I want or will I just get regrowth of the two main grasses?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  2 года назад +2

      Kyle - Those pasture grasses are very competitive and tend to out compete other species. I'd burn them while they are dormant. This will expose the new growth this spring and glyphosate can be used to reset the habitat and allow native species to grow.

    Will the fire kill the hardwoods where you cut all the cedars? Where you said it will be the first time burning.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад

      Jeff - very rarely will fire control hardwood saplings. Fire may result in the top dying but it won't kill the root system.

    If you would take a skidlaoder and clear some brush would fires over the years bring back native species or would the weeds overtake

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад

      John - There are too many variables to accurately answer your question. However the proper use of prescribed fire will certainly help with native vegetation recovery.

    What type of two-way radios do you use when you burn?

    Dr. Woods, I'm really interested in using prescribed fire on my property, but we have a lot of poison ivy and I've heard that burning it can be hazardous if people get the smoke on the or in their lungs. Any thoughts?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  3 года назад

      Carl - We burn poison ivy frequently and none of our crew has any issues. However, none of us are extremely allergic to poison ivy..

      You may be talking about white cedar in the Lake states. Eastern Red Cedar is very invasive in the Midwest.
