- We're sinking our teeth into "Abigail," a horror comedy about a group of kidnappers who don't realize the sweet little girl they've grabbed is actually ... a vampire. We disagree yet again on this movie, which Christy liked more than Alonso did. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known as Radio Silence, and written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, all of whom made 2019's very similar "Ready or Not." Starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud, Giancarlo Esposito, and Alisha Weir in the title role. In theaters now.

I feel like we watched an entirely different movie lol. All three of us. I had so much fun with this movie. It felt like a natural progression from Ready or Not in a lot of ways. And I did care about what was happening! I also think Melissa Barrera is just very good at this kind of thing at this point. For what it’s worth I also enjoyed the new Guy Ritchie so maybe I’m just easy to please this week
I'll say it again... Katherine Newton looks like a baby Virginia Madsen.
Oh wow, she does!
To me she looks like Angeline Ball’s character Imelda Quark in “The Commitments.”
She looks so much like a younger Christy I can't believe no one's noticed lol.
Just came back from
Abigail. I wasn’t bored, but it had a really bad script and some
Cringe acting choices. I feel like this was a big step down from Ready or Not. It’s feels like
It’s aiming for general audiences by dumbing down the approach. C+…. All the third act twists were super tiring…
Im so curious, could this film have advertised itself without giving away the vampire twist? I wonder what the response would be if no one knew going in?
They would’ve had to find a way to make the “kidnapping movie” look way more interesting. Not sure I would want to see it if I didn’t know the twist, but 100% agree I wish they could’ve pulled it off.
@@Blake_Hawgfan24 They could have. They could have still shown the "I'm sorry about what's going to happen to you," line, and cut it in a vague way. There was a time that filmmakers used to film things just for the trailer, knowing they weren't going to use it in the final film. The trailer for the original Omen never reveals Damien in the antichrist.
This could have been like Ready or Not. I was not aware of the mystical element until I saw the movie. But they would to change the movie title.
Spoiler talk…
I think they could have hinted the vampire or the killing in the commercials and trailers, but not reveal who the vampire was. Even in the movie, they played around with idea that it might be Dan Steven’s Frank being the killer similar to the Scream movies, part of the movie is the mystery.
I think I might have enjoyed the reveal more if I did not know. And I like the crew and banter in the first half than the second half’s vampire fight. That got boring.
@@brianng8350 The beginning of the movie is definitely written and directed like you aren't supposed to know. I think that was obviously what the writers and directors planned. I don't think they would have had to change the title necessarily, but a different title could have helped misdirect people. The marketing did a bit of a disservice to this movie. Imagine people who might come across it on streaming years from now and might not know anything about it before they watch it. They'll have a better experience.
When I saw From Dusk 'Til Dawn opening day in 1996, this was way before everybody had internet and cellphones and social media and spoilers and rottentomatoes and this was a time when a movie plot could be kept a SECRET. We went into the movie expecting a Tarantino/Rodriguez shoot 'em up heist kidnapping thing. Then it turned vampires. The entire theater went bonkers. Some walked out. We stayed. The good ole days.
REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE
I hate that Kevin Durand kinda looks like Elon Musk
That was distracting.
Also angus cloud looking like Sam smith.
I was like wtf is going on here
I like the thumbnail. It kind of telegraphs how you each feel about the movie.
Thank you, that's the intention!
Those thumbmails are my favorite. Especially when it's a movie i want to be good, and their faces are so disapointed, or worse disgusted, hahahaha
Fun review! Alonso, I agree, handsome or not, Dan Stevens irks me. Christy, your love and enthusiasm for movies and reviewing them is infectious and joyous.
How many movies do we get per year where the title is just simply the first/first and last name of the main character?
Thank you Matt! Yes: Shirley, Margaret, Annabelle, the list goes on.
After "I'm Your Man", I think it's very very clear that if Dan Stevens bugs you, it's absolutely because he's so good at his job!!!
Yes Bev, exactly!
Wonder what Alonso thinks of original Fright Night, a classic comedy horror movie, as opposed to straight horror.
Joseph of Fish Jelly hated this movie, but think he & Alonso are in the minority.
People often accuse me of being a movie snob but Abigail was a stupid blast! Might've been the beer before but I'm okay with that! So much silly fun! People applauding, laughing and cheering. I even talked a friend into joining me and he loved it too.
Why did the vampires explode with black liquid and guts, instead of red blood/guts?
I liked this a lot more than I expected to. I actually was surprisingly into the characters, and I thought they came up with a clever way to give us a quick backstory on all of the kidnappers that made them all a little more real and easier to care about. Agreed on Alisha Weir (who also played Matlida in the recent film of the musical!) and she was so much better than they let on in the trailer (man, I hated that trailer).
The more I'm away from that movie experience the more I forget about it. Great review and I agree with most of both your guys points . That is the biggest issue with this film there is NO ONE TO LIKE AND OR CHEER FOR !
Is there a Problemista review? Can’t seem to find it.
Coming Tuesday!
I wanted to like this film more than I did (7/10 probably?), but there were a couple of glaring issues, without spoiling, that drove me bonkers, and I imagine on a second viewing, there would be more.
1. There's a scene that requires a character, that is established in the movie as intelligent, to make a bonkers-stupid decision, that they never would've made, if not for the screenplay cramming it in to be cutesy, or simply trapped by the writers' own setups.
2. Once one of the twists in the film is revealed, it undoes all the reasoning for one of the major "rules" set up in the beginning of the movie. So it exists for no logical reason whatsoever in the story, other than the writers wanted it in there as a plot device.
3. I can't believe Melissa Barrera could fit a gun in her super tight pants! (JK)
I hate that they ruined the surprise in the trailer, but to be fair I probably wouldn’t want to see it otherwise. Reminds me of Dusk til Dawn. Starts as a kidnapping and halfway through trying to survive a bar full of Vamps. Sound pretty similar.
It is very Dusk to Dawn. It was a crime movie than a horror movie, just like this movie.
While i dont disagree, i dont know how you market it otherwise. An audience Expecting a crime thriller and getting a super bloody vampire horror comedy might not receive it near as well.
@ntmetroid It can be done. Show some of the blood and kills without context. Do some voice-over to show this has a supernatural element. But they definitely have to change the movie title as that is telling too much.
"I became a vampire when I was sixteen. That is why I always look sixteen. In those days, of course, life was tough for a sixteen-year-old.” What We Do In The Shadows is still the best take on Vampires.
Need to see it again because when I saw it yesterday the only other people in the theater were an older couple that wouldn’t shut up for 2 hours despite shushing them multiple times 🙄🙄🙄
Oh no, were they confused about what was happening?
@@BreakfastAllDay nope just chit chatting about everyday life crap. At one point I heard one of em mention percentages and I wanted so badly to walk over there and be like “if you wanna talk the whole time take it outside” 🙄🙄🙄
I personally had a ton of fun with this. The first act drags a little bit but after that i had a big grin on my face the rest of the film. Its campy as hell and knows exactly what it is.
this movie is a BLOODY GOOD TIME
I saw a clip of a bunch of SCREAM alum showing up to support the film, which is very cool.
I saw it last night and I had a great time! Alisha Weir is so impressive but I liked all the other characters, too. Kevin Durand was probably my favourite of the bunch. But I agree regarding the marketing. Everybody who has seen a trailer or even looked at the poster knows the central twist, but the movie pretends for quite a while, that the audience doesn't know. I don't think it would have been impossible to market it less spoilery and it would have been even better than I already thought it was.
Now I really need to check out Ready or Not.
They could have hinted the vampire and killing in the trailers, but leave that as a mystery that it could be one of the kidnapping crew instead.
Sooo.. I expected this to be way bloodier than it was from your out of cinema review. Also.. this is really enjoyable. Was very funny especially that third act. This really is Dan Stevens movie. He was effing hilarious and hamming it up. The perfect use of Dan Stevens. The final cameo was a delight 👌
Always enjoy seeing that person.
I had the opposite reaction. The third act was boring vampire battle. I liked the movie more before they started killing the crew.
I loved it…. But I do agree with your review. The movie was repetitive, but the performances were very good. Nice dedication to angus cloud. 7/10.
I hate how these days telling people what a movie is about is considered a spoiler.
Agreed. When it comes to certain films I don’t want to know shit, but that’s on me to avoid it, this is no spoiler at all.
your old buddy ...interviews this .... !!......Pulp Fiction cast on meeting Tarantino and changing film history......30 year ann !!
Really excited to see this
When I first saw this trailer (before 'The First Omen) I was convinced we were finally getting the live action 'Vampirina Ballerina (whose cartoonist I happen to know), but alas, it was not. Rip off?
I was really enjoying the movie for the first 80 minutes. Was really disappointed with the finale.
It kind of goes on a bit. Loudly. Very loudly. The ending is odd. Maybe they hadn't really written one.
I caught up to this yesterday. I thought it was fun, and let’s just say I hoped the person who showed up at the end was Nic Cage so it could be a Renfield tie in 😂. I like Dan Stevens and think he knows what he’s doing as well.
Totally. We enjoy the way he uses his looks in sinister ways.
I might catch a matinee of this tomorrow since a majority of critics seem to dig it, and I haven't disliked any Radio Silence film.
That being said, you guys should watch The First Omen! It is way better than it had any right to be.
We're planning to catch up with it for streaming, thanks.
i liked the movie a lot
SPOILERS AHEAD
I shouldn’t have watched the trailers as it gave away lot. Still enjoyed it tho, enjoyed the climax. Glad Joey ended up being a final girl. I loved how even after finding out Abigail’s true identity, she kept her Pinky promise. Which is what saved Joey’s life in the end. Love the bind she formed with Abigail. The end fight was Brutal. I was like “man they need to a vampire slayer there to help them”!😂 I want to see more …maybe a sequel or a series.
she didnt keep the pinky promise all the time, she wanted to kill her too after the identity reveal.
I really feel this movie would have been much better if we did not know this is about vampire. Like Ready or Not or Six Sense or Usual Suspects, I rather discover the secret as I watched the movie.
I definitely had a different feeling than Alonso. I enjoyed the first half with introduction of the crew and the banter.
Thank you both, as usual; disagreeing once again; how healthy! Abigail's arrived in our humble burgh; so has Challengers & The King Tide...actual choices for a change....if i were to follow chronology, Abigail would be first up.....maybe; lol; have a great weekend!
Thanks Marty, you'll have to let us know if you check it out!
I enjoyed it but it was a little predictable. It's a solid 7/10. I definitely liked it better than "Ungentlemanly".
I had fun with this one, but I do agree with Christy that it went on a little longer than it needed to. The finale dragged and had maybe one too many twists in it.
Really liked this movie so I’m disappointed that it flopped in theaters. I wish it used red blood coloring instead of that black sludgy liquid. these days not many people want to even go to movies anymore, I hope it is a big hit at home.
Btw if you rewatch scream5 it’s really sort of unwatchable as the weird colour grading reallly just stood out as does the pacing. Scream 6 is actually vastly superior in a lot of ways and also… Melissa Barrera who is great here (and 6) - I found her wooden in scream5. I think people like scream5 because it was the first time we revisit the franchise in a long time since 4
I honestly didn't like scream 5. I though scream 6 was better, but that movie had some huge issues in it. Scream 5 was the easiest movie to know who the killers were, I figured it out right away and that killed the rest of the movie for me .
Is a 4 a slight thumbs down and a 6 a slight thumbs up? I am trying to get a sense of your scoring scale. Based on your review that's how it sounds.
Sure, that sounds about right. Stick around and you'll get a feel for our tastes.
What's the thing they kept doing that got old for you, Christy?
There's ... an explosion that occurs. And the first time, it's startling, but then it becomes less so.
@@BreakfastAllDay Ah, got it.
I wasn't even that impressed with "Ready or Not." Fun premise with some potentially sharp social satire, but it was fairly mediocre and surprisingly kind of safe. I feel like a bit of a grumpy old man for my opinions on even the well-reviewed recent horror movies. That said, Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton are great modern genre actresses.
I wish I never saw the trailer
It does give away a lot.
@@BreakfastAllDayI still want to see it but it seems like you could have stretch that big secret for a long time till exhaustion. It seems like the logic of giving away the plot would sell more tickets than letting the audience find out on their own but I could of seeing this be a great slow cooker twist movie without the quick ignition spoiler trailer. When our you guys doing The Fall Guy?
@@adamx6000 April 29! Review coming the next day.
@@BreakfastAllDay Yesss! Now I can finally stop worrying and get some sleep at night knowing there will be a review 🤪
This movie to me was disappointing ! I went on with high expectations. It was a let down to me. It started strong and had an ok ending. But the middle really didn't stick for me. It felt long, pacing was off. Two very strong performances. But the story just wasn't good enough, writing wasn't great. Overall I would give it a 6 out of 10 .
Sounds like this movie is an Abifail.......lmao.....I will see myself out.
Savage!!
I really enjoyed it. 4/5
Oh no! I dug the hell out of it! I had a ton of fun.
That's good!
@@BreakfastAllDay I still totally see where you guys are coming from though.
Completely disagree with this review, but it's great to have different opinions. Loved 😍 this film
It is indeed! Glad you enjoyed yourself more than we did.
Review Rebel Moon 2😂😂😂
Maybe I went in with lowered expectations because of this review, but I actually kinda liked this movie. It was fun, which not usually what I'm looking for in a horror movie, but it was kinda fun. The cast were all good, ESPECIALLY Alisha Weir as the little girl/vampire problem. If she wasn't as great as she was, this movie wouldn't have had any weight to it at all. Dan Stevens is good, although sometimes his New Yawk accent really stuck out incongruously with the rest of his performance. I'm a New Yorker. No, Dan Stevens, no. Melissa Barrera was good, and looking all Joan Jett. And I truly disliked Angus Cloud, which hopefully is a testament to his acting and not his actual personality. But I think he's SUPPOSEd to be a bit of an asshole in the movie, so hat's off and RIP. I saw the final twist coming way early in the movie, but that might be because I knew one was coming from a review I'd read. Good idea, but maybe not the best actor for that particular role, as much as I like that actor.
Alonso so often just doesn't get horror movies. And I'm sorry, a movie about a vampire ballerina -- it's a horror movie!
Alonso is so on point. A wasted premise, in a boring film. Litte miss Weir was great though
This movie sucked ass, but it was fun watching in a packed Montreal theatre only to see the repeated crowd reactions whenever Kevin Durand mentioned he was/tried to pass himself off as a Quebecer.
Bien sur!
Just came back from this: it’s too long and the acting was super cringe. Dan Stevens hammed it up too much. The script was incredibly stupid and wastes what could be a cool premise.
There’s a more interesting movie about Abigail and her dad that could have been made…
I really Loved Ready or Not, so this is a big step down.
This movie was so bad. I honestly don't understand all the positive reviews....
I AGREE!!!! 100% it was a horrible movie I wasted my money on it
Oh no, what did you think was so bad about it?
I hated the trailers so much I wouldn't even consider seeing the movie. It looks boring with so much schtick.
I shouldn’t have watched the trailers as it gave away lot. Still enjoyed it tho, enjoyed the climax. Definitely not boring. Tons of action and blood. If you hate blood you may not like this
Don't waste your money or time. Horrible movie no wonder it bombed opening weekend. Going to be a flop.
I have plans to see this with someone later. I so hope it's good! I really like that person and i don't want to see something crappy, hahaha
