The Senior pipe reamer is a must have for anyone smoking briars. Since 90% of the time I smoke cobs I follow the tough love cleaning approach ... a Dremel tool with a sanding drum and coarse grit. I grind the cake off until I start seeing cob coming off. May be shortening the life of the cob, haven't really noticed. I definitely notice that the cob smokes a whole lot fresher afterwards. Gonna stock up on paper plates ... they appear to work a whole lot better than paper towels. 👍
When I did my pipe refurb, I used a dremel with drum sanding attachment to remove most of the old cake. An amazing tool, of course on a briar it would be very dangerous in regard to removing briar as well without an incredibly steady hand. As you say though, a very handy tool for your cobs!! I love the resiliency of a cob! The Senior reamer is an awesome tool but, some of my pipes won't accept it even at its smallest setting; a sharp pocket knife comes in handy for those little buggars. I'm glad you stopped by buddy, you're full of wit and wisdom!! Happy Piping Howard!
That senior reamer is absolutely perfect for the 673ks, not sure about others yet........though I will say it is too big for my Zulu. Glad you stopped by brother! Happy Piping!
Great video, now i need to get some reamers. I have been using Wild Turkey 101 to clean with (also to sip while cleaning). Thanks for the tips, happy smokes.
Thanks John!! I may have to switch to some moon shine soon because rubbing alcohol is near impossible to find here right now and I am getting low. Just make sure you ream the pipe before sipping the Wild Turkey or the pipe may suffer. 🤣🤣 Happy Piping!
The Senior reamer is a must, especially if you own the 673ks specifically. It works in a multitude of shapes but, it almost seems as if it were created with the Bulldog or Rhodesian in mind. Glad you stopped by buddy, Happy Piping!
Pretty in depth Dallas! that's a pretty big reamer you got😉. fortunately for me l dont allow cake to form so cleaning is easier. Hope you have a great weekend.
Hey brother, I use isopropyl 100% that I add some water to, and yeah, just when I thought I hadn't gotten any on the outage finish, sure enough, some had SOMEHOW gotten on there. Awesome video dude! 👏👏👏 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks Rob, I'm glad you liked this episode buddy! When I first used rubbing alcohol, I tried to clean the charred rim with it! 😳😳 Yeah, I quickly realized my mistake. So now, I am very careful to only clean the unfinished portions with it!! Happy Piping buddy!!
Thanks for the tips on cleaning. I use 190 proof Everclear alcohol when I clean. Like you I have heard some stories about the rubbing alcohol. Anyway Great video and Have a Blessed week.
Hey BurleynutBob!! Yeah, the rubbing alcohol will ruin the finish on a pipe but, as long as you're careful not to let it spill over, I've never had an issue. It's probably safer to suggest the Everclear honestly. I hope you had a great weekend buddy! Happy Piping!
So that's how you use those. A must have. I have some very caked-up pipes that need some TLC. Thanks Dallas. I found one I think I'm going to get on eBay.
Hey brother, glad to see ya my friend!! Glad I could show you a new tool if you hadn't seen one in use yet!! I hope you gents are happy, healthy, and got some spare change in the pocket! Happy Piping guys!!
I have a similar routine, but use cheap vodka. I have an old Butner reamer I use sometimes, but usually just use a blunt knife. I also tend to do mine every month or so, not quite as intensive as yours in terms of the muck that comes out but I do use more pipe cleaners etc. over time I guess! 👍
I should probably clean more often but I really do not enjoy cleaning my pipes. 🤦🏼♂️ I also have Butner reamer but the Senior is absolutely perfect for the Sav 673! Glad you stopped by Sean! Happy Piping!
The "books" will tell you 1.5mm is preferred but, I generally just leave a thumbnail thickness (a little less than an American dime) to protect the briar. Because I don't remove the entire cake, the portion that is left becomes quite strong and generally very easy to recognize as I ream the new layers off. Hope this helps buddy, Happy Piping!
Very nice techniques, Dallas. After you ream a pipe, do you have to “break it in” again? Or do you ideally ream it to where there’s still a thin layer of cake left?
I leave a thin cake in the chamber when I ream. I would guess it to be around the thickness of an American dime.....maybe just a bit thinner. Thanks for stopping by Chris!! Hope it helps, Happy Piping!

How many millimetres is the ideal cake in the bowl?
