- We are finally crossing it off the list; Ryan is climbing all the way through one of the 16in gun barrels.
Editor's Note - please don't try this in our parking lot or anywhere else that these barrels can be found, if you get stuck, it will be very hard to get you back out.
Please consider supporting the museum with a donation:

Good job. It's hard to find men of your caliber.
LOL
Big, massively big, balls of steel.
Nice!
Take my wife please! Henny Youngman
too clever
And after 17 and a half minutes of labor, we see the birth of a new museum ship curator. Congrats
I can think of a way to speed up the process.. 😂💥
the 1st in captivity!
I think you should started a new tradition for right of passage.
This comment reminds me of the rhino birth scene in Ace Ventura.
Really wanted to hear him grunting and swearing
Some say the spirit of the ship cat lives on through the ship curator
There's no audio , due to the " sailor language" he's using at the moment.
@@johnbockelie3899 I read his lips and he's coming up with all the right technical terms!
was there ever a ship cat
Up next Ryan crawls thru a 5/38 gun barrel, stay tuned for next week and we tackle a 40mm.
Bahahahaha....Ill be impressed with the 20mm
I'm sure he'll fit right in the .50 brownings 😂
@@scottmcdivitt2187he might have to fast for a bit to pull that one off...
@@jtough7499 😂😂😂

"I'm a professional!" *Uncontrollable giggling* Really inspiring confidence here, Ryan.
I was stationed aboard the NJ in the 80's and climbed thru the center gun on turret 3. I still have my Cannon Cocker card from then.
Good job, Ryan! Not many of us left who have done that.
Was that some challenge on the BB's??
Were you the XO?
I'm guessing it was to remove barrel obstructions
@@clubtepes2046 Yes. Kind of like the Shellback ceremony. You got a card stating you were a member of the "Cannoncockers" and a notation went into your service record.
@@KutWrite Ha! no...
The 911 recording would have been interesting, "he's stuck in a what ?".
Kudos for going above and beyond ... and through.
Lol
🤣
It would be hard to cut someone out, the heat from the cutting would be bad.
@@ThePinkPanth3r one small charge in the breech , one spectacular human cannonball .
@@mineown1861 one big splat on the wall that the cannon is facing :D
The museum is lucky to have a man of his caliber
Boy did my claustrophobia get triggered! That's one way to clean a gun!
Yeah, got me too. Not sure I could do that myself.....
I couldn't watch. OMG Next video is checking the keel.
@@missyd0g2 yeah for some reason I think the dark totally enclosed keel would get to me faaar far worse than the gun that is clearly wide open on either side **shrug** gotta say I don't think I'd miss out on the chance to climb through and around either of those parts, plus any and all they'd allow me to =)
I bet Ryan felt like a gun swab after that. Lol
That's how you become the new curator, you have to improve on the previous time through the barrel.
"if you want that promotion, you gotta beat 6 minutes!"
@@Paladin327 There's definitely a way to beat 6 minutes... 😂💥
Now for my next trick...I will be fired from the middle barrel in turret one, fly in an arc several miles high, and then hit a strategically placed net in a field on a farm in Connecticut. Let's see Super Dave top that!!
That is one dedicated curator. Give that man a raise!
I am willing to make a bet that as a boy you never dreamed you would have your own battleship to play with! Thanks for another great video!
I really want a director's cut of this - I need to hear what all he was saying to require muting XD Maybe make the unedited version a patreon only video?
Well if he's Polish, I could probably hazard a guess or two...
I'm sure there's a few razzle frazzle mish mash consarnit bedazzles in there. :-P
Unfortunately I believe they couldn’t fit the microphone pack in his back pocket as it made his diameter too large. Shame they didn’t use any audio from the camera itself though.
A shotgun mike at the muzzle suggests itself. A radio connection w/headset probably needs the transceiver antenna in close line of sight with the bore, lined up with it.
Submariners must often "dive" the torpedo tubes to inspect them. These are about 24 feet or so in length but they are a "roomy" 21" in diameter and without rifling.
also special forces (Navy Seals?) have to learn to go through a torpedo tube on a sub ´coz that is one way to deploy them
@@truecerium4924Yep. Navy SEALs and an inflatable boat. They load in an inflatable rubber boat, crawl in, flood the tube and then get shot out with pressurized air like a torpedo
@@shockwave6213 with the sub completely submerged, what would be the exit depth? Like 40 meters?
@@truecerium4924For reason of OPSEC, they _won't_ give details; they want the bad guys to stay puzzled.
When you have an escape trunk already available, no need to get so colorful as to launch anybody out the weapons system. And I think they would have these warriors of derring-do just do a swim-out anyway.
Think the main escape trunk is quieter in use.
Thanks for giving me a look at what my uncle tried to convey in words. He signed up the day after Pearl Harbor and was stationed on the Texas. He then went to the Missouri, in the after turret. He said the chief picked him for "bore duty" because he was the skinniest. They did use a leather pad underneath; I don't remember him mentioning a rope though. And yes, it was a regular operation---mainly for inspection.
After??? Aft….
Autocorrect strikes again...
@@bernielomaxsmustache7204 Either is correct--after turret or aft turret.
Bravo! I took a confined space rescue course and had to climb through some narrow spaces but none were anywhere near 68 feet long! Takes the right state of mind to make it all the way!
Would like to see a video on how the barrels are relined - sounds interesting.
Check this guys page. There might be something on this. ruclips.net/user/Drachinifelfeatured
ruclips.net/video/phWUBx7GwhQ/видео.html
Many years before RUclips there were probably countless thousands of interesting things being done...but the people doing it were thinking "nobody would be interested in how we do that. It would be like watching paint dry". Just one of hundreds of reasons that I keep asking for a time machine for Christmas.
Thought you were a great curator before, new found respect!👍
he also did this in the middle of a july heat wave as well
@@Paladin327 it was probably pretty chill in there.
@@captiannemo1587 i doubt it. It’s a steel tube in the summer heat, and i’m pretty sure it’s not very well ventilated
When you hire the next curator just before you retire. He or she has to do the same thing
Great episode, undoubtedly you have joined a very select cadre of ship personnel.
A select cadre and probably the last too! They don’t make em like they used to...
Initiation time for you, go ahead, climb through that gun barrel, son. It's easy.
" Watch dis, Olive, as I makes me way true dis gun barrel, ug, ug, ug, ug!!!". Popeye, showing off.
Halfway through, he thought it over.
Bishop in Aliens, Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption, and now Ryan on youtube. GG.
It behoves you, as curator, to check and ensure all 8 other barrels are the same length via additional barrel crawls.
;)
What a trooper!
You can watch a grown 6' something man crawl through a naval gun and this video only had 36k views.
People are missing out
Love the content
So is this is the thing that point at James Bond at every 007 movies?
Yes, but it's supposed to be a handgun barrel.
The spiraling grooves are called rifling. Their job is to make the projectile spin when it's fired, which improves stability.
my uncle served on the uss mississippi in ww2 in the foward gun turrent and he would tell me that he was small enough that he had to go in the gun barrels to clean them, what a scary job
I bet he was feeling every bit of that 17 1/2 minutes of crawling days afterward.
Who thought being a curator at a museum could be so adventurous!
You are the best curator of any museum ever Ryan. Thanks so much for your amazing work.
Good job keeping history alive guys! It’s so important and not enough people are doing it thank you!
I often thought about this, every time I do, I can feel my claustrophobia start kicking in! Thanks for taking one for the team! Now I have this crossed off the bucket list of things I would never do!
This brings a new interpretation to the old ship joke… it’s your turn in the barrel.
Bravo! That’s some dedication right there!! Ryan really digs deep and goes the extra 68 feet!
in the middle of a july heat wave no less
I don’t know which induced more viewers anxiety for me, the mast climb or this. Also perhaps you should have lathered Ryan up with Butter or Oil to make emergency freeing easier
His excuse was that the sweat would lube him up!
@@BattleshipNewJersey he did come out dripping!!
Fish oil would have been best
We built large propane tanks (30,000+) and had a welder inside one grinding his welds prier to moving it into the heat treat ovens where it soaked for 3 hours at 1,000+ degrees. The welder worked up a sweat and that caused his body to swell so he could no longer fit through a 16" manhole. He had to strip to his skivvies, pour oil over himself and then we pulled him out of the manhole. He was a bit bigger than Ryan to start with. We could have let him cool off naturally in the tank but it had to go into the furnace pretty quickly to stay on schedule. He was very glad to get out of there !
Well you definitely don’t want an over-ram.
The Battleship Texas has 14 inch guns, you up for a (smaller) challenge?
he barely made it out of there lol xD
Would need a speedo and a bucket of axle grease for that.
@@dmacarthur5356 that paints a picture I won't soon get out of my head.
I’ve seen a pic of a sailor poking his head out a 14 inch on Texas
Up for a bigger callange, dive to Yamato's wreck and climb through the 18.1 inch gun. I heard that it could fit 2 skinny people.
Good job mate. That was a tough crawl in any condition. Love your videos, thanks for keeping that beautiful ship alive. Salute to all Veterans.
I’m about your size and not naturally claustrophobic, but just watching this totally wigged me out and I would never attempt that unless lives depended on it!
Major respect that you pushed through, that’s nuts!
I couldn't even watch the 18 minutes in real time because I was claustrophobic. Good job Ryan
Someone Never Cleaned the Bore Properly After Test Firing - Ryan Proved This Today A Hope's 9 Would Go a Long Way
It's also been in storage since the 50's or 60's. I recall him saying in 1 video that the barrels were replaced either after the Korean war or after Vietnam, with the barrels originally made for the Illinois and Kentucky, which were never completed. The original barrels were relined and put in storage, which is where this extra barrel came from.
Also, what would have been hilarious is if the guy at the end of the rope pulled him back through just as he went to the end.
Its the South bound end of a North bound Ryan! You could always use compressed air to get him out lol. I bet it would make a really neat "foomp" noise! I'm picturing a stack of mattresses at one end, and maybe 20 PSI in the other lol!
Okay this is by far the best. Video you all have ever done! Amazing!
It is called chamber diving and was a right of passage on the Iowa, I did it back in 89. When I did mine, both arms were extended forward like I was swimming. The trick was not to pull yourself forward enough to wedge yourself in where you couldn't extend your arms again.
In 'nam officers were pulled through with a rope to inspect for cracks in ths liner.
Happy Anniversary to this video!
This ranks up there with the Wright brothers in terms of great human feats!
I'm glad he didn't get stuck, that would have been horrible. I can image a bunch of fire rescue persons scratching their heads wondering how they'd cut through the barrel to get him out.
Imagine if he got stuck towards the end
The fact that you said your ending speel while hanging out of the end of the gun barrel is pretty impressive!
Great video! That takes a tremendous amount of guts!
My hats off to you Ryan. No chance in hell I’d ever do that, but I whole heartedly respect you for doing it.
That was quite the feat! I applaud your efforts to become closer to the ship and its crew.
So awesome to see this, I’m impressed!! My grandfather served on the USS Colorado and I recall him telling me that they lowered him down the barrel in a hammock to inspect the barrel, but he was 5’6” and by his story, just made the minimum weight back in 1936.
You just cleaned that 16inch barrel. It is now ready for use.
This reminded me of a Super Dave Osborne event. I loved it. Well done Ryan!
This ended far better than most Super Dave events!
thats a blast from the past!
Glad you did not give up!
That was a barrel of laughs 😉😂
Ewwwwww booooooo hisssssas
Looking at your shirt , I'd say the rifling is still pretty sharp!!!!!!!!!! OH! We have some septic tanks that need inspection!!!! Any takers!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice job! Thanks!
Man of the right caliber!
I really love seeing the videos of a gun firing while he is climbing through this one. Inspiring. As long as you're in there, you could steel-wool some of that rust.
If you make another video where the audio is cut, I’d suggest adding some voice over of interesting information in line with the video. Such as how many barrels were made for the Iowa class or how many lugs are on the breach.
That's dedication! Bravo! I had no idea the length and the degree of tapering of the barrel.
OMG - I wish we had the side-sound for the staff outside giggling !! WOW - Ryan looks exhausted and sweaty
Santa going down the chimney is a walk in the park in comparison.
You've got my fullest respect Ryan. As you were going through the climb/crawl/slither I kept wanting to get you a broom up front. Cheers.
Your Crazy ! 16" 68 ft long ..boy oh boy what a crawl..Great Video !! My wife was scared you would get stuck but you pulled it out ! Thanks for the fun Video !
OMG I just spit my drink out!
Kids have been throwing rocks in here!👊🏾
Looks nasty. I'll be sure to not repeat this with my 16" barrel.
Those old battleships are still so impressive. Toured the North Carolina battleship many years ago in Wellington, NC. In addition to her guns, I was impressed by her fire control room which was sheathed in heavy steel to protect the crew working on firing solutions. Equally impressed with the mechanical computer used at the time to determine firing. Thanks for these videos.
That’s Wilmington.
WOW! Good job sir! And his crew!
Ummm.... yeah.... This would be a big "Oh, Hell No!" from me.
I couldn't muster the courage to crawl through a barrel like that if it were just five feet long, let alone one that is 68!!! I have forwarded this video to many different people, including Dave at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.
You, Ryan, constantly set the bar for museum directors and curators. I hope we cross paths soon!
I have been looking for this video for a couple days now and I am dying laughing watching it. I really wish we had audio on the big dude in the small space. love the channel and the Ryan snark.
Mate , I felt claustrophobic just watching that effort. I do confined space work and we never go into an smaller than 24 inches it’s way to dangerous. Great effort.
Awesome job. That's one curator crawling through a 16" barrel....... hint hint
Great job. Also cleaned the rocks out of the barrel.
Ha! That was awesome. Really hope to come and visit someday.
Looks like you were delivered by sea section. Or “How Ryan got his groove back”.
You went from curator to obturator.
This was a boreing video.
Usually there’s a twist at the end, not the whole way through.
And lastly, you’re the only person I know who kept his job after being fired.
Oh boy that were some great ones :D
I think that warrants a very slow clap 😂🤣
What have you done?
*sigh*
Very punny. I approve!
Was actually more fun to watch then I thought it would be!
Also: next time use a small RC car with makeshift wipers, that should take care of the dust. On the fifth run the swipers should have some gun oil with them. :-)
This is how a museum curator is born.
How much of a donation do I need to make to have the director's audio cut of this released? 😆
Wasn't this a scene in Emergency? Wa, wa, WAAAA! Squad 51, respond to a call about a man trapped in a naval rifle.
They did keep 20 or so in storage at the Long Beach shipyard.
Those are some serious rifelings in the barrel.
You are a brave man. Good Job!
Dude, that was awesome Ryan, well done!
Man that makes my skin crawl seeing such a cramped space.
You are a very interesting curator. Thanks for the videos.
Yeah, that's a hard no.....
5 ft. In and my claustrophobia would kick into overdrive.
Way to take one for the team boss!
Thanks for all y'all do.
Good job !!!!you know how a bore brush feels
I think you should add this activity as an income producing attraction. Fastest time on a weekend could be given a prize. Great job. I belong to the Battleship Texas Foundation and am thoroughly enjoying your videos.
Congradts on your 100th video! Ryan becareful we dont want to lose you!!! BIG HUGS from Massachusetts I am a navy vet I love your videos I am very excited to see all your videos - I never went up those gun barrels but I been in very tight places - but now i am retired and my body is failing, my spirit is not and your videos make me smile with joy Thank you!!!!! Mr. Ryan, I commend you! That neither easy or something I would want to do, but you did it! Congratulations.
Buy that man a beer! But holy cow, Ryan -- what is it with you and tight, dark, claustrophobic spaces?!
This channel is never boring
Mad respect, sir. Wow. That's impressive.
Now he can truly call himself a swabbie.
Maybe just a....... swab
My guy!!!.
Your show is brilliant..
Keep up the good work.
I hope somebody bought him a cold beer. Ryan really deserves one after that.
There was a huge circular brush that was 16 inches in diameter. You would fill it with a gallon or more of oil, feed a rope down through the barrel and pull it from tip to breach. It would spin in the barrel scrubbing and depositing a layer of oil keeping the barrels nice and clean.
Admit it! We all fast-forwarded the video to the end.
But really, kudos to this guy!
Nope, mine is still running, tbougg I am using the time to read the comments.
Oh my gosh, Ryan’s stuck! Where’s the hacksaw? Good job, Ryan!
During the crawl I was really hoping he would talk about the chamber, then describe the rifling and other barrel details. But... after seeing the sweat pouring off after 17 minutes in the tube I suppose I can read the comments because I'm sure my questions have already been answered. Keep up the great work.
I’m glad he hasn’t been fired!
Lol, now you can truly say that you've been in every area of the ship. You had to do the " Worm" every inch of that rifled gun barrel. I bet you were sore for a long time afterwards. Great job, you would've fit in with any Navy crew.
I bet there were some colorful words coming out of the barrel during this
What a curator will do for his job, what a Christmas Card shot that would make.
