Yamaha's sizzling RD400 Daytona Special was almost the final chapter in road-going two-strokes.
Cycle summed it up nicely in its June '79 road test: "Innocent-looking, trim, petite, quiet-all of it's a sham: the 400F encourages the unwary to go too fast, accelerate too briskly, stop too hard and wheelie too often.

gotta love the chrome bazuka exhaust. Owned the same bike in mid 80's, unfortunatly seized on me on the highway one night and scrapped it after that.
I bought the exact same bike new in 1980 and kick my ass, on a fairly regular basis, for not keeping it.
Yours is beautiful.
Me too! One of my all time favs!
I bought one of these new when they came out and went to my social motorcycle club one evening. One guy said "So you're going to race it?" I said "No. He said 'No one buys an RD and doesn't race it". And so began my short race career. I made a small fortune... started with a large fortune. Next year I graduated to a 1980 GSX 750ET (GS 750ET in the US). The RD400 wasn't competitive against the newly released RD 350 LC watercooled bikes. Those things were super quick!!!
Check out my website for more great bikes. Call to chat as well. Quite busy this season
Thought was going to be dead in the water with the virus. Opposite. Thanks for your comment. Carlsbikes.com
This is Not a daytona special. Its Canadian version called RD400G ( better than daytona because it has electronic ignition and slightly more bhp. ) Nice bike Carl
The '79 Canadian version, the "F", was a Daytona Special. Except for graphics, it was identical to the "G" with electronic ignition, lighter wheels, different foot peg mounts, suspension tweaks, etc. (compared to the earlier RD's). The F and G Canadian spec bikes run way better than the emissions strangled U.S. spec '79 (last year there) but it's the low mileage American bikes that are going for big money at the auctions.
I have always wanted the RD 400 Daytona. Had a RD 250 that was built too the hilt, always wanted to that to the 400 Daytona
I thought 1979 was the last and only year of the rd400 Daytona special? I had a 1979
That’s a 3J7 model right Carl? I have the almost identical 3M4 G model which I absolutely love and am restoring a 3M4 F model at the moment before moving onto a 2R9 E model project. As you may have gathered, I do like RD400’s more than a little bit.... 😉
That thing is awesome!!
Hi Jeff
VERY AWESOME!!! High interest from a few collectors. And interested bikers. Fun bike for sure
Thanks for the comment
Cheers

The bike might benefit from a bit of a carburettors tune and maybe some new plugs sounds flat and not crisp to me
Thanks. The bike has been sold Carlsbikes.com
Cool ❤
