Coleman NorthStar Lantern w/ Hard Shell Case Review

- I decided to replace my very old Coleman lantern with this shiny new Coleman NorthStar 1500 lumen lantern with hard shell case. This lantern uses a type of mantel I've not used before. It's the Coleman #95 mantel, and it attaches at the top and bottom. Most other Coleman lanterns I've seen use 2 smaller mantels that attach only at one end.
While many people online seemed to have received a defective item, mine seems to be in perfect shape. Watch my walk-through of how the lantern assembles, as well as first-time operation.

Nice type of lantern from Coleman. Those mantles are made of silk. Correct method is to burn them without propane first and they will smolder on their own 100% for a few minutes. Then, they are ready for use. This method prevents them from damage, tearing etc.
I bought two North Star 12 years ago when they first came out . They served me well

Thanks for the comment. Part of why I make videos like this is because of how useful I've found video reviews for very specific products I'm interested in that other people have made. Sometimes ya just want to see them in action. You usually don't get that from an amazon review.
You always should pre burn the mantle(s) first with just a lighter and no propane dont even screw it into the tank with the wire and globe off touch a match "Flame" to the Mantle let it burn then let it cool... Carefully put it back together now put propane pressure to it... a lot less chance of blowing a hole in it.jim

This advice is consistent with the written directions that came with the package I bought. However, when I tried to follow those directions, I was unable to get the mantle to light without propane unless I put the match very close to the cloth. Even then it doesn't really light. I accidentally touched the mantle with the match and immediately tore it. Pre burning the mantle with a match or a lighter seems to be a tedious process that I can't quite get to work. What am I missing? Thanks for your comment.
@@wilkbor you can use a lighter. It takes a few seconds for the mantle to burn.

Pre burn your mantles to avoid all that smoke and flash burn.
Nice review, my Coleman “deluxe” dual mantle wasn’t putting out enough light at 1,000 lumens so I ordered the Northstar that puts out 1,500 so am looking forward to the 50% increase in light over my other Coleman propane lanterns.
Mantles are meant to be pre burned before lighting with gas. FYI.

I very rarely see someone start a mantle lantern without pre-burning the mantle first. Unsure why you didn't?

You should try to avoid extensively touching the globe with your fingers. The oils from your fingers leave burned fingerprints on the globe once heated up.
I like my North Star lantern. I’ve used it on a few warm weather camping trips. Zero issues. I’m interested to see how it operates in freezing weather.
I'm told below freezing the propane wont work ..
@@jasonvoorhees7919 No, is butane won't work but propane will work. Because the boiling point for propane is -42C but Butane is -1C.
how bright is it compares to an LED lantern?
The top, globe, cage & bail can all be removed together when the top nut is off. Just pull up on the bail.
I found that the globe can be removed without taking the handle off. Just make sure the handle is not around the gas knob.
Never burn mantle’s inside the globe. Turns the glass black very hard to clean. Just saying
I recently purchased one from Amazon. Got one that was made on a Friday, my ventilator would not line up properly without force. Unless the globe was seated upside down! Makes no sense. I still love the lantern though.
Does it come with a back reflector?
Bought one of these at a yard sale. Had a mantle in it. Used it a few times. Went to replace the mantle and it just burned up the floppy mantle Instead of lighting. I assumed I bought the wrong mantles.
Making sure to use the exact type of mantle meant for that specific lantern model is definitely a must. The right style and size. Coleman makes (or has made) a lot of different lanterns over the years, and many of them use a different type of mantle.
Any 500 CP mantle will work on this lantern. I do have to light it with a match through the chimney.
Bought two of these northstar lanterns like new at a yard sale for 2 bucks don’t think they have ever been used kinda hard to find the mantles for them nobody has them around me

Thanks for the video. I lit mine for the first time indoors and immediately noticed the large amount of black smoke that came out the top. I decided not to do that again. I washed the soot off the glass and tried again outdoors with a new mantle. On my second attempt, I fired it up outdoors on a table with the metal top off. Most of the black smoke went into the atmosphere without fouling the glass, but when I tried to put the top on, it got hot so quickly that I was unable to line everything up and screw the cap on. So apparently, you assemble it first and then fire it up. My question is how do you light it without getting soot all over the glass? Thanks again for the video.
Hi! I have a Coleman Northstar 2500 lanterns for about 20 years. For best results in not sooting up the inside of the glass and chimney top, you will have to install and PRIME the mantle. To do this, you will prime it by not having the chimney top, glass envelope, and the glass protective cage OFF the lantern. Everything will already be taken apart if you change out the mantle. USE CAUTION!!! You will NOT apply propane to the lantern when priming the mantle. Install the mantle and then use a lighter or stick match at the bottom of it to light the mantle. Do not touch the mantle at any time. The mantle will light up and turn BLACK. If there are any areas that are not lighted then light them with your lighter but be very careful not to in any way touch the mantle at any time. You will destroy it if you do! Let the lantern COOL DOWN completely then reinstall the chimney top, glass envelope, and the glass protective cage and open the propane valve just cracking it open at first until the mantle lights up, and actuate the IGNITER. Once the mantle burns bright white, gradually increase the propane to your lantern.
I'd suggest either using a match and insert it whilst burning before opening the valve, or as soon as you open the valve click the starter.
