My father was a preacher, so I'd only ever heard religious country and western music. So back in the 70's I was on the way to this christian youth camp one time, and I was in the back of this guy's car, and I grabbed a tape off the floor and put it in the cassette player. The batteries were starting to go a bit flat, and the first song that came on was Misty Mountain Hop, and aside from anything else, that monotone he sings the start of each line in was even more pronounced because of the low batteries, and it absolutely *_BLEW MY MIND._* I had no idea there was music like that. I asked if I could borrow the tape and I haven't stopped listening to Led Zeppelin since...
This one of my favorite LZ songs, I love the chanty style in which he sings the verses. I’d drive around just playing this and the next one, Four Sticks (y’all will like that one) over and over. Check the lyrics to this song, they’re great.
Yeah, Misty Mountain Hop is my ringtone... "Why ... don't ... you ... take ... a ... good ... look ... at ... your ... self ... and ... de ... scribe ... what ... you ... see?" *_"AND BABY, BABY, BABY, DO YOU LIKE IT?"_* Genius! As for Four Sticks, people often say it's the weakest song on the album, but I absolutely *_LOVE_* it, and you might be the only other person I've seen give it some praise. There's just no other song like it that I know of; it's a drone, and it's got these crazy Lord Of The Rings lyrics, _"rainbow and dawn, strong shields and lore, they can hold the wrath of those who walk, and the boots of those who march, Baby through the realms of time so long ago."_ (I don't know, I've been listening to it for decades but still can't work out what the words ACTUALLY are!?). I suppose you know IV is a great album if people think that is the weakest song? 🤣
Yes, we definitely can't neglect John "Bonzo" Bonham, who was one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, just as Page is one of the greatest guitar players, Plant one of the greatest vocalists, and John Paul Jones, though often unjustly overlooked, is simply an all around musical genius. The next one, Four Sticks, has a great drum rhythm and riff, and Going to California is a cool sort of psychedelic-folk song. Then comes one of my favorite Zeppelin songs, When the Levee Breaks, which is based on an old blues song, but which they totally Zepplified.
In the 70's i was a teenager and since this time l loves Led Zeppelin my brother was 7 years older than me ! So i can hear this band since the early 70's, i am still a fan till the day i die ! Omg i feel realy old now ! Greatings and love from germany ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Killer response! This song, as do many of their songs, takes time to grow on you. Expecting to hear a song with regular time signature, cadence, etc and then hearing this kinda weirds out the brain! When Presence came out in 76, 9th grade, still have my pink 8 track...I was , not disappointed, but confused and had to put it down for a while. Came back w a different mindset and now it's almost my favorite. Been in the Tacoma for about a month now! Four Sticks is very unique, too! rock AND roll
My first listen to this was sort of the same ..It is quirky with the odd notes that Robert uses in the verses , but after a few more listens it is like yea I get it now .
Great song and glad you enjoyed it. It has a very different and very cool vibe. "Misty Mountain Hop" was written by Page, Plant and Jones. Plant said the lyrics are "about a bunch of hippies getting busted, about the problems you can come across when you have a simple walk in the park on a nice sunny afternoon. In England it's understandable, because wherever you go to enjoy yourself, 'Big Brother' is not far behind." The song goes on to talk about the desire to leave all of that and urban life behind, "So I'm packing my bags for the misty mountains Where the spirits go now, Over the hills where the spirits fly." Plant once said that he missed the "misty mountains of Wales" and he eventually bought a home near there, although on England's side of the border. Some people think the title is in reference to Misty Mountain in The Hobbit, but I tend to think it's those mountains in Wales. Could be both. I'm not sure but I think the other guys, or at least Bonham, might have been singing back up on this one. Thanks, and see ya on the next one. :) Edit: It will be fun to hear what Olivia thinks of other LZ songs once she has had a chance to watch the reactions you've done.
@@Codex7777 It's not so much about taking drugs as it is about getting busted for taking them and how much the government tries to control our lives. I quoted Plant's explanation of the lyrics in my comment.
"And baby, baby, baby do you like it?" I reflexively throw both fist in the air, every time. Fantastic song - such a great party song back in the day. And a great reaction, thanks!
this is the first song that told me that music could be interesting. a friend of a friend always had this album on the record player when we would stop by and this song just woke me up to music!
Great to watch younger guys enjoying what we grew up with. I skipped school when I was 11 to stand in a ticket queue to see the mighty Zep. Joined the queue at 2pm; couldn’t hear anything for a week after the concert! Where ? Edinburgh, Scotland
This a KILLER song, with a strong beat.!!!! Another Bonham masterpiece on drums. And as usual Jimmy Page is slaying on the guitar. And John Paul's keyboard and bass are a steady driving force. These men were in a league all of their own.. SPECIAL..... John Bonham was a mason in his early years, he has strong, tough hands. In some songs he plays without sticks -- bongo-style. Check it out!!!!
finally......finally!!! Every reactor "only" shares songs that they like. I appreciate that you posted a song....which I do love.....that you didn't like. Makes the reactions more real.
Being the kid in the '70s I simply don't know what it's like to not have these Zeppelin songs in my head. I can't even tell you the first time I heard them and I know almost all of them by heart.
I reacted the same way as your gf the first time I heard this way back when, it was just such an off beat rhythm and the singing just sounded off, but after listening to it the 2nd, 3rd, etc. time, it became one of my favorite songs on the album. The "offness" is what actually makes it work, if that makes sense.
Finally! I follow a lot of reactors, but you are the first of mine that have done this song! Thank you! This is my personal favorite Zep song. I've never understood why it isn't as popular as so many of their songs. That's fine. It's still my favorite one. I'm now subscribing.
Great reactions with good honest feedback. Not every song is going to speak to everyone. I'm a big Zeppelin fan but there's a couple songs that don't move me as much as the rest. Great job! Keep up the good work!
I think that I had the same reaction the first time I heard this song albeit 50 plus years ago. The references to The Lord of the Rings are unmistakable.
Olivia - you are Silas’s gem! Your honest, reflective, thoughtful, and heartfelt comments are refreshing and spirit lifting to all us long time LedHeads!! Love you guys Greatest rock and roll band of all time
Another great reaction and the beginning is purposely disjointed to introduce you to the change of pace on the album. You are making an amazing series of videos that are reintroducing Led Zeppelin to hopefully new listeners thank you.
Back in the '90s I worked at a newspaper where we would ask visiting celebrities random questions, one of which was always what are you reading. Ace Frehley of Kiss said he was reading Lord of the Rings so he could understand Led Zeppelin better. True story. Keep up the good work guys.
It's good to see your girlfriend get involved and I appreciate her honesty. While loving LZ and liking this track (especially the groove/rhythm), I have never been fond of the vocals.
Hey great reaction guys, this is exactly what we were hearing smockn pot and dropping clearlights in the early 80's before the song was remastered lol! Clear as a bell. 🤣
You'll be at 2K subscribers in a few days with your Zepathon reactions. My ex wife had 2 young teenage boys when we met and I really laughed when the youngest remarked about how much Zeppelin I played by saying "All the cool kids at school listen to them".
There was one one Led Zeppelin song that ever had another vocalist besides Robert Plant, “The Battle Of Evermore” on Led Zeppelin 4. The singer was legendary English folk/rock vocalist Sandy Denny, who was extremely popular and considered to be one of the best female vocalists that Britain ever produced. There are also no backup singers on any Led Zeppelin song. It just goes to show how great they were when most people don’t even notice that it’s just Robert Plant singing.
The great thing about this song is, if you are a beginning guitar player or beginning keyboard player, you can play along. There are three basic chords: A, G, and E. That's it.
About time you had Olivia back on, she makes your channel. This is a classic tune that is ovetshadowed by more prominent tunes from that stunning album. Please have her react to When the Levee Breaks, it is the best banger on that album. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎹🎶
You need Alivia to react with you on Going To California. I think I know her vibe. One of the greatest songs with John Paul Jones playing the mandolin. Trust me she will absolutely love it , and you will also. It is definitely a CHICK TUNE.
Silas.. You guys should react to Led Zepplin’s song “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”, (a true gem)…off their 1976 album “Presence”…The album was not as critically acclaimed as many of their others, and so didn’t get much air time on the radio… The track contains one of Robert Plant’s best harmonica solos…YOU WON’T BE DISAPPOINTED….
This song will actually grow on you seriously some of it’s gonna stick in your head maybe it’s just that Robert half scream half sings sound that is uniquely him
I like your girl, honest. I didn't really like this song at first either, I used to skip it. But it grew on me. I told you in a previous comment which songs to do with her, this was not one of them ! Going To California... please, with Olivia. These first reaction clips (not just yours) all seem to have one thing I'm worried about, never just saying if you don't like a song. Thanks Olivia.
Another great reaction, I love your honesty, not every Led Zeppelin song is a banger (most are though). However Silas I think you need to have Olivier on the Going To California reaction, I know your dad said it was his favourite song but I think Olivier will love it.
As a few others have commented , many Led Zeppelin songs require more than one listen to come to appreciate them . This song is one of those . To me , anyway . I bought the album upon it's initial release and considered this song one of the weaker ones on the album . Not any more . It is a unique and rockin' blast .
Once you get through the studio versions I can’t wait for you to check out live so you can see the magic unfold in front of your eyes & ears. And yes that’s all Robert….(he’s always been my favorite too 53 years now I joke with my husband that I’ve known Robert 18 years longer lol) I will direct my grandkids over to your other channel they are big time gamers….Silas what steering wheel would you recommend?

Are the Misty Mountains a Tolkien place? I kind of feel like reading those books again. I wonder if Tolkien's writings might mean something more to me now that I am 30 years older than the first time I read them... Great reaction! Alivia - I like how you are honest about parts of this song. I like this song, but not nearly as much as what is still to come on this album.

Hello there - is it spelled Alivia? Or is that a typo? Regardless! Welcome back! Robert has said this was about a "love-in" during the hippie era that was broken up by police. In concert, he would say (paraphrasing) that "This song is about what happens when you get caught with rolling papers in your pocket". According to Jimmy: "We were just playing around and suddenly I came up with the opening part of 'Misty Mountain Hop' and then we were off. Jonesy put the chords in for the chorus and that would shape it up. We used to work pretty fast." I love this song from the different cadence of the singing to the slicing guitar riff to the flurry of drums. It's so energetic, you can't help but move to it.
A lot of people don't know that "back in the day" there were multiple tracks laid down on songs. This gets one singer sounding like he's got other guys sing with him in harmony. But in fact it's him singing in different pitch Same with guitars and that's why IMO most studio music is better than the live counterparts. Black Sabbath is one such example because Iommi laid down some of the most incredible tracks ever played. They're amazing. If you have not listened to Sabbath yet get to it QUICK!

I was 10 years old when this album came out. But a few years later I was hooked. And my younger brother (12 years my junior) even more so.
The drums are insane on this as they are on many Zeppelin tunes.
Insane? I mean it’s a pretty standard few beats across the track. Some drum fills. I could show you insanity
@@マシュードーラン I believe you. Do you have any RUclips clips?
Bonham's pocket on this song is so smooth. This is Plant's song, but it's nothing without that groove.
JOhn Bpnham on drums and John Paul Jones on electric piano and bass. Awesome.
This one of my favorite LZ songs, I love the chanty style in which he sings the verses. I’d drive around just playing this and the next one, Four Sticks (y’all will like that one) over and over. Check the lyrics to this song, they’re great.

Yet another great one! This live at MSG in 1973 was great! Live...Bonham sang harmony...but here it is all Robert!

Love ya' s
