- (Nov. 13, 2021) Two-Time World Champion David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez remains undefeated in his homecoming return after a dominating seventh-round stoppage against 168-pound contender Kyrone Davis in their headlining super middleweight showdown.
The 24-year-old Benavídez (25-0, 22 KOs) displayed a full arsenal of punches to dispatch a valiant effort from Davis (16-3-1, 6 KOs), who stepped in to fight the WBC’s No. 1 super middleweight contender on just two weeks’ notice. Davis showed incredible heart and guts, taking extreme amounts of punishment throughout the fight but never hit the canvas and no matter how many punches he was hit with, he always returned the fire.
Davis’ trainer, Stephen “Breadman” Edwards, put an end to the punishment at :48 of round number seven when he threw in the towel. Watch the stoppage HERE: / 1459749566018957313
“That was a great performance on my end,” Benavídez told SHOWTIME’s Jim Gray following the stoppage. “A lot of courage by Kyrone. A lot of respect to him and his team. He’s a tough dude. I came out here to give the fans a good fight and we both left it all out in the ring.”
With November 13 officially being named “David Benavídez Day” in Phoenix, the boisterous crowd at Footprint Center urged their hometown hero on with every punch. Benavídez landed 137 of 258 power punches (51 percent) and targeted Davis’ body throughout the fight. He connected on 50 body punches, 45 of which were power punches.
“It was tough but the thing about me is that I have so much conditioning that I’m going to keep going until he eventually stops,” Benavídez continued. “That’s what eventually happens. They tend to give up. I know that I don’t have that one-punch knockout power but I’m going to be ready to get you every single round.”
The 27-year-old Davis played his role in the crowd-pleasing main event and earned the respect and admiration of everybody watching.
“I’m a little disappointed,” Davis said. “I wish I could have pulled out the victory. I don’t like losing. I came in on two weeks’ notice. Shame on (Jose) Uzcategui for being on steroids. I had to come in on short notice but I fought like a warrior. I’m living my dream. I love coming out here and putting on a great show. Fighting is in my blood. I was raised like this.”
With the unbeaten streak to start his career still intact, Benavídez, the former two-time super middleweight champion, now has his sights set on a mega-fight at 168 pounds.
“Everybody wants to see me against Canelo, right? I don’t care what his assessment of my fight is but they keep putting these contenders in front of me. My last fight was a WBC Title Eliminator and that’s why I’m here holding my belts. They need to give me the opportunity. I’ll go through anybody. Whoever they want me to go through. If (Jermall) Charlo wants it, he can get it too. But he doesn’t want to get in the ring with me.”

Respect to Benavidez for admiration for the man’s toughness in the stoppage too. He realized dude wasn’t gonna lie down and at a point as a fighter you respect it.
BRUHH FINALLY. This was one of the most underrated fights of the year. They were straight talking shit to each other while throwing bombs. MOST DEFINITELY my type of fight!

He was having his way with Davis. There was no need for him to stay there and keep taking all of that punishment. They could have did that a couple rounds earlier. When Benavidez walked through a few of his hard punches I saw it in Davis eyes that he knew it was over but he's a fighter not a quitter

Davis is an excellent boxer, and I've always enjoyed watching him fight. Benavidez is just so dangerous and viscous, if he keeps getting better, and it looks like he is, he's the next champion.

An I say to the younger boxing fans, these guys are as good as the champions of any period. each generation the best fighters take some things from the guys before them and the level keeps getting better, and better.
It just makes me glad that boxing is still a good draw, given that there’s other combat sports today, t wasn’t like that 40 years ago. It was Boxing, Kick Boxing. The first octagon full contact with Royce Gracie, changed combat “sport”

I like David. Kyrone is very tough. But he kept his hands down . With head up. And left his self open . With no ability to counter punch. On top of that he lacks experience and power. ... David is a beast But canelo dominates him if he stays off the ropes . And stick to the game plan. If he does that he will counter and hurt benavidez to the body real bad . And possibly stop David. And bivol would just box circles around David. Bivol has the size to withstand David and the footwork to get in and out . Not taking anything away from David but he isn't a one punch knockout artist. He is only dangerous when he has you against the ropes or when you standing steal right in front of him. In the middle of the ring . You can get in and out. And land 3 or 4 punches . And then get out of way.

Benevidez and Plant are 2 of some of my favorite fighters. It took me awhile to choose but im rooting for Plant. However DBs punch output worries me,i know Plant got a bigger ring but he os gonna have to stay moving and stay sharp the ENTIRE fight. And he needs to be creative with his punches,use lateral movements,and he needs to stay off the ropes and avoid stopping and getting caught and extensive exchanges. DB has a better gas tank than a remember so Plant better be well conditioned.
Benavidez is beast. But man, how much more so would he be if he applied that kind of pressure using his distance? He’d have more pop and tnt in those punches if he only used his length to his advantage. Might’ve had Davis out of there a little earlier if that were so. But, he’s young and as he’s already stated himself, always room for improvement 🤙🏾💯💪🏾✌🏾
