Bravo for sharing this. For my eyes, this has always been the best way of checking my work with the arching. In the right light, it reveals things that one had not noticed before. Sometimes I just want to turn on all of the lights and look at my work from across the room, but.....{:-))

Yep, this is a simple and quick (and zero cost) system to see the transversal flowing of the arching curves, observation from different angles with the shadows of the oblique light completes the picture offering a more three-dimensional vision. For a direct comparison with other archings and to keep track of the curves I also use the profilometer, which I find very useful and effective: ruclips.net/video/rH82AxfDhPQ/видео.html

@@DavideSora I did have a question that I would love your input with. When I look at the Strad posters, recently the Titian with those lovely CT scans, I am realizing that those arches have to have been distorted through age and use. How do you go about correcting that distortion, rather than mindlessly copying them when making arching templates? Perhaps one day you could make a video on creating arching templates from a poster. Thanks, and be well.

@@ChrisC811 Unfortunately I can't help you with this, as I don't use or make arching templates. Naturally I look at the archings of ancient instruments that I like and I also appreciate the scans or transversal profiles of posters or books, but I consider them only an element to try to understand the curves, but as regards the deformations I try to imagine how they could have been made originally , but without claiming to duplicate them. I basically make my bows inspired by Cremonese curves, possibly based on violins that I know how they sound. I know that it is possible to correct the deformations of the transverse curves by shifting them without modifying their extension using Autocad, but I wouldn't be able to do it personally because I don't know how to use that software, and furthermore it wouldn't be realistic anyway because the transverse deformations (fifths) are always associated with longitudinal deformations (sixth), so it would be too complex and random to do so, also considering that each instrument can deform by a different amount.

@@ChrisC811In this case, I can't help you, because I don't make and don't use arching templates. I know that it is possible to correct the deformations of the transverse curves by shifting them without modifying their extension using Autocad, but I wouldn't be able to do it personally because I don't know how to use that software. Furthermore it wouldn't be realistic anyway because the transverse deformations (fifths) are always associated with longitudinal deformations (sixth), so it would be too complex and random to do so, also considering that each instrument can deform by a different amount. So what I do is try to understand what the radii of curvature of the central area could be by superimposing circles on the diagrams of posters or books, then developing the rest of the curves based on my visual impressions accumulated through observation of the original archings. Basically, I don't copy any arching in particular, I make my own, working essentially by eye and feel.

Great tip, even for a guitar maker, Davide. Nice!

If you're feeling more high-tech, you can use a laser level to draw curves with a red or green laser line. I'm more on the low-tech side, so I go with shadows🙂

    Ciao caro Davide.
Grazie per averci offerto informazioni così chiare ed educative.
    Voglio chiedervi qualcosa.
Avete qualche peso o range ideale per i piani e gli schienali con l'arco finito prima di iniziare gli spessori?
    Grazie

    • @DavideSora
      @DavideSora  5 месяцев назад

You can find all the details on how my violins are made in the videos on my RUclips channel. You can also use this index on my website, with all the construction phases sorted by topic. Clicking on the titles will open each video on RUclips. This is the direct link to the video index: davidesora.altervista.org/videos/

My videos do not claim to be an online violin-making course, they only show my way of making violins, I hope they can offer some interesting ideas and information to those interested in violin making. If you're looking for a site that offers a free step-by-step method for beginners with all the measurements and templates you need, take a look at this: www.makingtheviolin.com/
If, however, you are willing to pay, you can find several luthiers who offer paid online courses, with a simple Google search you will find as many as you like. I think that sharing information should be free, it's what I do and I don't want to earn anything from my videos, but there is a limit to the time I can dedicate to it and I respect those who do all the necessary work and are not willing to offer it for free.

You can find all my videos on violin making listed in order of construction in this index on my website: davidesora.altervista.org/videos/
It's not exactly a beginner's manual, but they show in great detail how I build my violins. If you have never built violins, perhaps it would be more useful for you to follow the method you find on this website, it's not exactly what I do, but it works and provides all the measurements and templates needed to make a violin step by step: www.makingtheviolin.com/

I'm not lucky, I'm just a professional violin maker who has been working for many years, I must have all the tools I need and a few more...🙂
But don't be discouraged, it can be done even with fewer tools, it will just be more difficult and you will have to use your ingenuity to make up for the lack of specific tools.
