Aw I loved this. It's so evident how much Rob Reiner loved and admired Nora Ephron. Such a loss.

"I'll have what she's having" may be the the most memorable line of the movie.
But for me, it is the end love scene when Harry tells Sally that he loves her. The, he lists all the reasons why he loves her ending with the crescendo:
"I came here tonight because when you realize that you want to spend the rest with someone, you want the Rest of your live to start as soon as possible!"
For me, the greatest love scene in cinema.

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." I know, in the movie, Billy says that the final line in Casablanca is the best line of a movie ever, but honestly? I think this one beats it out. :)

    • @utubeDaveutube
      @utubeDaveutube 2 года назад +6

Completely agree! And I'm blown away that Billy came up with this line (a line that is not noted in other videos) --- he gets the biggest laugh and most tender lines in the movie --- both improv ideas from Billy Crystal ---- Wow!!!

Cost $14.5 million and made $92.8 million. Great profit in 1989 for a great classic romantic comedy. It had it's own magic! Meg was so sweet and beautiful.

This is the perfect romcom in my eyes and was the blueprint for every single one that came after. I saw it for the first time just a few years ago and the script and jokes still felt so fresh almost 35 years later. They couldn’t have casted two people more perfect for the role with genuine chemistry like Meg and Billy. There will never be another like it.

  • @utubeDaveutube

Wow! We did know about Billy's contribution of "I'll have what she's having" ---- but to hear at the end of this that he also came up with two great parts of the NY speech "the crinkle over your nose" and more importantly ---- best line ever --- "When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody . . . . you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." --- The most emotional cap of a line. Brilliant. --------- So this is the best insight of all the nostalgic RUclips clips on this wonderful movie. :-) It makes me treasure all the more that I have a signed poster from the main four cast members PLUS signed by Rob and Nora --- a treasure I'll always cherish.

I mean, there are a lot of people who get into relationships and cheat or get cheated on. Probably half of them. So we cant say the most heard is the right way or the expected way. It may not feel "realistic" but I think the bigger discussion is whether or not people are committed to working on themselves and being better people and not just finding people who are okay w who they are. For example, Sally helped her friend stop chasing someone who didnt love her. And their friends jumped at the chance of being together cos they knew it was good. They didnt let their bad experiences or lack of, deter them but rather, make them understand what was a good thing. Whereas Sally and Harry are avoidant (for good reasons up to a point) but have to learn how their own traits played a role in their fight and how to make up. Harry wasnt good w his words and feels like intention overrides impact, whereas Sally wasnt honest about her feelings and says it was a mistake when really thats not what upset her and she should have talked about how it made her feel for him to get up and leave so early. People remain stagnant for reasons and a lot of times, its because of themselves. We can point the finger all we want but we are complicit in things just as easily.
The ending difference is like la la land vs when Harry met Sally except la la land is not gradual and starts off romantic. But the whole point is that in la la land, they didnt actually communicate how things made them feel and assumed things as well, whereas Harry and Sally at the end of the day DO talk and listen even if they came at it from different places. Im glad that they made them be together because there is so much unhealthy romantic relationships, stories where ppl are forced together as enemies and fall in love, and heartbreak and when Harry met Sally is about two people growing alongside one another, w each other's support, and falling in love. Maybe its not the average (again, bc of what we are willing to accept) but its genuine and I love it. Its realistic, hopeful, fun, genuine, and its one of my favorite movies.

Nora Ephron and her sister wrote this perfect love story for the modern world.
She also wrote of her love affair with the Althorp, a tale only a highly educated upper class Jewish woman could have conveyed. A true genius.

So basically Billy Crystal wrote the best lines in the movie? He should get screen writer’s credit. Perhaps that’s why this movie is, for me, in a different league than You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle.

What would be an alternate topper to “I’ll have what she’s having”? (Which is of course is the best)
    • “Am I too late to get a little something on the side?”
    • “He couldn’t have waited until hers came?”
    • “Of course at the diner, he doesn’t have the ingredients for that at home.”
