Your reaction to Beni on the shamisen was basically exactly the same as mine, she's just kind of jaw-dropping. She really wails on that thing, and it is amazing how well it fits in with the modern instruments. Even through the rest of the song you can hear it plucking away in the background almost like she's playing rhythm guitar, the whole arrangement is just so textured.

"Homura" doesn't even contain bass and shamisen solo, because it's from the guitarist Machiya's solo album before the creation of WGB. Bass solo is a melody from another Wagakkiband song, made by the bassist Asa. And Beni (shamisen) just rocks her heart out here. Last year they played this with different bass solo.
btw they do a lot of instrumental pieces, live only. Each time it's a different instrument (band member) combination.
While performing live, they also show other forms of traditional Japanese art. (fan dance, sword dance). The idea of the band is to keep the traditions alive, make them popular, while combining them with modern day music to reach wider audience. The right members gathered for this purpose. It's my observation only, but i think it's true. Each one of them was somehow having this idea inside them, even before joining the band.
-the drummer Wasabi used to have ink written messages in Japanese on his back
-the guitarist in his solo work was wearing the noh mask (there is this trend or more like philosophy, non famous musicians to wear masks on the Internet. This way the art will get the attention, not their face and who they are)
-apparently the traditional instrument players were always involved
    - Yuko (vocal) graduated university with piano, but she is trained in shigin (the vibrato singing - actual poem reciting; she has national champion award), kenbu (sword dance), fan dance.
Yes, Machiya has Steve Vai among his inspirations. I thought about this even before i knew. I was hoping he likes him too, since he reminded me of him. Yes, as others mentioned already, Machiya (a.k.a Shin Oumura everywhere else outside Wagakki band) is using Sago New Material guitars. He created bunch of models for them and is using them all, since the forming of the band. 2019 is the first time he started using 7th string one. He sings a lot: in his other band, other occasions and a couple of duets with Yuko here. He sure can multitask very well.

@@ohcomeongetoutofhere Asa's song (Yoshiwara Lament, 'ballad' of prostitute in historical Yoshiwara red-light district) was an original work (with Hirosue Kei, guitar), adopted by the band. Originally sang by worst sounding vocaloid (Kasane Teto) as a meme, since been sang by Suzuhana (WGB), Asa (himself), & Yuuki Ono, as well as performed by Tokyo Philharmonic.

I was specialized in Japanese Language an Culture an Linguistics at Rome Sapienza University, then worked 5 years in Tōkyō as interpreter an finally came back in Rome where I got married with a Japanese woman, who also plays keyboard and bass guitar. glad, you like them. they are awesome, special and refreshing to the ears. quick edit: glad you also recognized the class of guitarist machiya (shin oumura). his technique is flawless plus he has the feeling and he has a fantastic guitartone as well. and very important: you very rarely find guitarists of his caliber, who are "teamplayers" and can put their ego behind the sake of the song. also has a great voice. my favourite guitarplayer. his guitars come from small, but fine japanese guitarmanufacturer Sago guitars. I believe this one has 29 frets. thank you for you great and genuine reaction, thomas.

Machiya is using here a Sago Guitar, which has 30 frets, these extra frets are not high notes, but low notes. That's the reason why he usually uses a capo around the 4th or 5th frets. He also uses in other performances a gibson les paul or a fender jazz master, for smoother songs.

@@chillmonster5857 Shamisen style instrument had a history in many nations. Japan shamisen can be traced from Okinawa. Babymetal, Band-Maid and Wagakki Band are playing the music for the 21st century. This performance is a big favourite of mine but they have some great MV's and their live performances are always great to both watch and listen to. That guitarist has the freakiest mask I've seen - a broken doll's face is somehow scarier than a demon or whatever. And Beni Ninagawa playing that shamisen is always a beautiful sight. Love your Metal around the world idea...but always looking forward to more Band-Maid and Babymetal! 🤘🦊

I need a nine minute version of Homura with extended solos on all instruments, with the orchestra of course. Version of Bring Me To Life with Amy (generational vocalist like Ann Wilson, Lisa Flisher and Aretha Franklin) pushed that song to #5 behind Stairway to Heaven, Layla, We Don't Get Fooled Again, Gimmie Shelter - Right there with anything else on my top 10 list - as is Homura now - which has blown me away like maybe 1st time I heard Freebird - which it likely just bumped off top 10 list thinking about it...... . What a talented band! Traditional Japanese / Power Rock Ballad - with orchestra Fusion. This is some orgasmic music salad! As electric as a hair dryer in a hot tub! What a RUclips find!
