I just subscribed. You are very informative & helpful. I enjoy watching the videos too. I lived in Panama in the early ‘90’s & have been back twice. We are considering moving there again ina few years. One thing concerns me: you mentioned there are no ambulances in El Valle? That’s scary. While I haven used one in eons, that’s a concern as I grow older (I’m 65 now). Emergency services are a boogie to seniors. And thoughts?
@@helenequinn That’s why I signed up for the Panama helpline. If an emergency happens I call them and they coordinate any help available. There’s definitely some higher risks about living in a developing country, but the benefits far exceed them for me. Thank you for subscribing!
Hi Patty. It’s sounds like you’ve been through the wringer. From the expats, to the contractors, mold, etc. it’s seems like a lot. I know we all live and hopefully learn. Do you regret buying and living in El Valle? Have you been robbed? Have people tried to break in? The Expat suing another expat from visiting their home sounds insane! What’s with all the mold? Is El Valle more humid than other areas? It’s sounds like a nightmare!😮 What about a backup generator? Are they more expensive there? Do you have AC? Just curious. I’m looking at Boquete. I hope it’s not like El Valle. 😊 Thanks for the tips. How did you get around the Wellsfargo problem? I need to keep my bank here and write checks to Banistmo when I move there. You mentioning the two step verification and codes makes sense. I’ll have to check with my bank here. I need to figure out how to keep my phone, number and banking app. I always say… Keep on Keepin on. Sounds like you’re doing that. 😊
Oh gosh, not all that stuff happened to me 😆 I think I had a really good experience with the house renovation. I’ve dealt with much worse in the states. Some places get more mold/mildew than others, key is to have circulation, elevated foundation, sun exposure. Cleaning with vinegar helps. Only regret is that I didn’t move to Panama sooner 😊🇵🇦 I have not been robbed but houses near me have been. And some hikers have been robbed at gunpoint on the India Dormida trail. I feel safer here than I do in the US. With Wells Fargo, I closed the account when I traveled back to the states. I have a bank that sends codes to Google voice.
My husband and I are coming from Arizona to Panama in October with Jackies Relocation Tour. Unfortunately the tour does not go to El Valle. But we are thinking of moving to Panama late next year with 3 large dogs. I like what I have learned about El Valle because it is a smaller mountain town with access to Coronado and Panama City. Also the nice sidewalks, trails and nature. How difficult will it be to find a rental long term with 2-3 dogs? Thank you. Love your videos! Cheryl
It’s very challenging to find rentals. That’s one of the reasons the PRT doesn’t come here - no sense in showing people a place that has little housing to offer. The best way to find a rental is to be here and make connections. Are you staying after the tour to explore El Valle?
@@Pattybluehayes Unfortunately, we cannot on this trip but we will return! Thank you for your interesting and most helpful videos. So sorry about your bad experience at that resort with your family, but glad you had one perfect day! Look forward to watching more of your videos. Keep up the good work!
Patty, how often does the power go out in El Valle? Here in Boquete, I have power going on and off 4-5 times a week. Yes, I have sure protectors and battery back up, but have spent close to $1,000 in replacing battery backups over the past 3 years.
😮 That’s a lot. Is it some wiring in the house? Or throughout town? Hard to say the frequency here, surprisingly fine with all the recent rain - typically that could trigger it to go out. It seems to cluster, a few times in a week then good for a few months. Sometimes the planned ones don’t happen but you’ll get a 10 hour outage and no notice. It typically would happen after I bought chicken😆
@@Pattybluehayes I'm renting in a gated community here, so it affects all the homeowners. I've noticed that some of the outages happen between 1-3 am, so it sounds like there is some level on intentionality behind it. Most people are asleep then, but I'm often working at that time online since I have International clients. Sometimes there will be advanced notice about power being out & that will be for 4-5 hours usually in the mornings. Power seems to go out more in Alto Boquete versus Central Boquete (Bajo Boquete). The winds in my area are stronger.
Panama is a small country but with many differences throughout. Some areas you can walk to local markets and shops and some are more rural. To get residency, you have to research the requirements - easily done with a Google search or watch @IGoPanama or @PanamaRelocationTours. Both channels have abundant information. Only you can decide what your trip budget would be so I’m sorry I can’t be of help.
@@marilynnarnold811 Much safer here! For sure. Especially in a small town. Spots in the city can be sketchy. There were recently 2 tourist murders in Chiriqui province - a bit concerning. I believe it’s better to be prepped than have nothing to defend myself.
My name is Ronald Johnson and I am seriously considering moving to Panama in about four years. I will only have $150,000 from an insurance policy that my ex and I setup many moons ago. I wonder if I can get a small house situated to protect it from flooding
@@ronjohnson63 I would recommend visiting and speaking with an immigration attorney. Also might want to talk to a financial planner. And, you might want to consider renting instead of buying. A visit or two is ideal.
Hello dear, can you suggest a city to live for a month, cheap hotels not too dangerous. I'm coming down next June , your advice would be crucial . I'm a bachelor, but I don't do hostels . Answer this question , please and Thank you.
@@vincemurry4201 While Panama is a small country, it is very diverse. I’d suggest you start researching areas where you might be interested in staying. There’s Panama City, beach towns, mountain towns, small islands - In many small towns, Airbnb is best to find a rental. Enjoy!
As a landlord in the states, I can see that many of the things for which you need an attorney in Panama are the exact things for which you need an attorney in the USA.
Yes but I had an English speaking overseer who communicated with the construction foreman who managed the crew. There were some mistakes along the way but that’s typical in any construction project I suppose.
You look a lot like my best friend from high school. A woman that I worked with retired and moved with her husband to Panama in 2017. They came back to the U.S. in 2020 because of the world-gone-nuts medical scare. They wanted to be near family. She realized within a few months of returning home that she didn't miss dealing with bugs...tarantulas, scorpios and snakes. That would be a deal breaker for me too. They're currently in France since last year, just outside of Paris.
I went on a tour with PRT and am on their FB group. I wanted to dump FB but I truly need those groups for my future expat adventures.. Locally when I moved here to Cape Coral, I joined several FB groups. One called the 'residents' group is FULL of mean spirited people and constant hate filled bs... and another group was formed called the residents "kind group". LOL. I formed my own group for people headed towards retirement without big pensions, etc.. living on a small income or small Social Security and I have to approve every post.. but people sneak in those nasty comments.. and I have to take care of those and ban the author. It's thankless, but my group is friendly and troll free...
I think that’s the best way to do it. It’s kind of shocking how mean and petty people can become. I really think we make too many assumptions with text/posts. I’ve read into things that probably weren’t how the OP intended. But blocking people is a great solution 😆☮️💕🌈
My wife is Panamanian, we live in Coronado, and she chuckled when you suggested Chino doesn't have a negative connotation. Panamanians, in general, are extremely racist and classist. It's hard for us to see as Gringos, because we use our lense of fairness, justice, race and class from the USA to view others. We cant help it, its natural. We do things like give the benefit of the doubt, Believe that all people are equal, Don't ask people what they do for a living. Because we are interested more in who they are than what they do. That's not Panamanian. Just so you know, Panamanians are interested in what you do. That are interested in how much you make. And they're interested in what class you're in. They want to know who you know. They use this information to evaluate whether they want to be your friend or not. Thats classism. I'll leave it there.
So, does ‘Chino’ have derogatory connotations? I am aware of racism/classism here. Sadly, many feel the indigenous are beneath them or not smart/capable. And look at how the Blacks are treated. Colon has been neglected for years 😞 I was saddened to learn about the racism here, but not entirely surprised.
Yes, Chino can be derogatory, but it all depends on how you used it. So most of the corner stores (bodega, tienda )and cleaners are owned by the Chinese, which is why folks may say going to the Chinito. Born and raised in Panama, the only problem I had with the humidity is my hair😅. I always tell my husband and son when we go to Panama that you are no longer in the USA, so don't expect things to be like it. Patty, great advised Keep your financial information to yourself.
@@Chenda-rr6yo oh the hair 😆Mine has always been frizzy, and the benefits to my skin are worth the frizz 🌟 Thank you for your insight on the use of the word Chino.
Hi! I’m Panamanian but I disagree with your wife to a certain point. Probably I was raised very naive, but I grew up going to “la tienda”, and asking “chino, 2 libras de arroz y un pavito por favor”. If “chino” would have been pejorative my mother would have washed my mouth with “sapolio”. That being said, yes, you can make it pejorative adding bad words not only to chino, but to gringo, or cholo, or chombo. Regarding the money, it was when I moved to the US when for the first time in my life I was asked how much I made. I couldn’t believe to my ears 😮; but it was here in the US, never in Panama. About being classist, well I think that would be the very small portion that belongs to Club Union lol. Saludos a su esposa.

@@thetravelingkittens1393 oh gosh 😞 that’s scary. I’ll be 60 in July. Feel like I should make the most of the next 10 years 🌟
My Airbnb isn’t pet friendly, sorry.
Hi Patty, did you buy a car there or ship yours over? Are cars reasonably priced? New or used...
@@jmo2104 I bought my car here, which is recommended. Shipping is expensive and there are import fees.
I paid $9,000 for a 2008 Honda CRV. It was in great shape. If you live in the city, you don’t need a car.
Thank you Patty, great info I appreciate the details. Like what products to buy for humidity and back up plans and products. I am excited for the day when I will finally move to Panama, but I can kinda see that the first year or two will be a little trying on the patience getting things set up.❤
You’ll have a lot of fun getting settled. All the info you’re researching now will serve you well 👏🌟
Hi Patty! Glad I found your channel! I’d love to connect with you here in Panama about showcasing my home here. Let me know how to reach you!

It's seems like a lot of changes is it worth it.. the added stress is bad enough even though I like the rain and tropical weather... Mmmm don't know
I love your video's!!!! I'm still in the states trying to decide if I want to move there, so, any info like this will help my decision!!!!! I love your house! I'd love to buy something like that and fix it up like you did!!!! Have a great day and keep the info coming!!!!! Thanks
Thanks for letting me know the info is helpful. Visit a few times before you make a decision to move. And if you do move, I recommend renting in a few different parts of the country to get a feel for places.
It’s sounds like a nightmare!😮
What about a backup generator? Are they more expensive there? Do you have AC?
Just curious. I’m looking at Boquete. I hope it’s not like El Valle. 😊
Thanks for the tips.
Only regret is that I didn’t move to Panama sooner 😊🇵🇦
I have not been robbed but houses near me have been.
@@CherylRennie-n8z Thank you and happy planning 😊
@@mtngrl5859 we have a lot more in windy season. Tree limbs falling and such.
You can start by unfollowing...before blocking...but yes, I do both. Negativity is not worth your time or vibration.

How much I need to come visit panama for two three weeks to explore to become an xpoat. You can walk every where.

It seems like you have a much protective gear in Panama as a woman would have in America. I thought it was safer there?
Patty, you're still young: keep improving your Spanish, IT WILL make a difference in the years ahead.
I’m not that young! Will be 60 in 4 weeks 😳 And yes, I do see the accumulative difference the consistency makes.
Hello dear, can you suggest a city to live for a month, cheap hotels not too dangerous.

@@thenarrowpathoftruth9443 I guess so!
have you handled by yourself all the building of your casita? I am impressed. As a single woman I wouldn't.
Yes but I had an English speaking overseer who communicated with the construction foreman who managed the crew. There were some mistakes along the way but that’s typical in any construction project I suppose.

@@charliewilliams2735 Avoid them! 😆
Funny how we all have people we look like 😊 Oh your friends must be loving the bread, cheese and pastries!!!!!
See if you can join the group, single women living abroad groups .

Colon has been neglected for years 😞
I was saddened to learn about the racism here, but not entirely surprised.
@@Chenda-rr6yo oh the hair 😆Mine has always been frizzy, and the benefits to my skin are worth the frizz 🌟
Thank you for your insight on the use of the word Chino.
