- One thing that really surprised us after Craig's spinal cord injury was how hard it was to find suitable clothing to wear when sitting in a wheelchair all day and being at risk of pressure sores. In this video we discuss what to wear as a paraplegic and what clothes to avoid.

We (Craig and Claire) return home and attempt to go back to normal life 6 months after a cycling accident that left Craig paralysed from the chest down and reliant on a wheelchair. Omgoodness!!!!! Before I became paralyzed I had a beautiful long peacoat. SO NOT PRACTICAL!!!!!!! But I'm adjusting 😊 I never realized the shoes I can and cannot wear. Kinda sucks. Especially when its cute boots for the winter or cute sandals lol the only thing I cant stand to wear is gloves. I again love your videos!!!!! So ABSOLUTLY amazing! Thanks guys always!!!!
Yeah it does suck a bit, we had to get rid of most nice things and pretty much get a whole new wardrobe. Quite annoying when you see something nice and then realise it's not really suitable right?!

not enough people talk about this or realise what we as wheelchair users have to think about jackets are a nightmare im currently trying to find one suitable and have been in countless places
I know, it's such a small thing when you are able-bodied but really annoying in a wheelchair! I still haven't found a good jacket for when it's really cold yet either. Let me know if you find something good!

There's a company called Duluth that makes the shirts long in the back. Good for the day and mat work at therapy thanks for sharing.

Thank you James, I have been looking all over for a store that sells shirts that are longer in the back. It's Duluth Trading Company...and the shirt is called 'long tail'. 'The idea of a long tail is more commonly associated with shirts than t-shirt but the principle is the same. ... Duluth Trading Company YESSS!!! I wear tank tops and they dont ride up or anything. Def amazing for ppl in a wheelchair.
@@lnjfeisty6718 I know someone who pushes Kinetic Balance and they are so over priced, I know they are going to miss money. Duluth Trading Center's quality is JUST as good, if not better and at half the price.
I've wore Jeans every day for 30+ years, and conventional socks. No problems with my skin ever. Keep treating your skin like its gonna fall apart and it will just get soft. I've never worried about lines etc from socks and clothes as they disappear overnight.
Every body is different so you have to do what works for you. I found that the tighter socks gave me mild autonomic dysreflexia, wasn't awful but I prefer not having it for something as simple as changing my socks. I guess it depends on your injury level and extent of swelling you have. I do wear jeans sometimes and haven't had problems but I just prefer joggers really. I wouldn't sit on buttons or zips though as I'm quite a heavy guy and my butt already gets quite a lot of abuse from throwing myself around doing transfers.

Gloves for sun protection here in the desert southwest. Pushing on the joystick is wearing.
Diabetic socks work well too and jackets and vests that the zipper goes both ways. Leave it unzipped a little at the bottom and the fit is better. Good luck
We've heard that diabetic socks work well too, I think they are basically the same thing as these ones. Thanks for the tip about the zipper, we hadn't thought of that 😊

Have you ever gone on "Kingsize" website? My husband was 6'4". They had jeans, shorts, joggers, etc. that are long enough. They are based in the U.S. but you can check to see if they will ship to you. I hope so. God bless you♡♡♡

Clothes nightmare in wheelchair and specialist clothes so expensive! I'm not paralysed but still have a lot of issues as everything rides up or digs in or looks weird. 🙄
Yep exactly! I wish the specialist stuff wasn't so expensive because some of it does look really good. It's so hard to find stuff we're considering learning how to make our own clothes 😂

Find sox for Diabetics as Diabetics have the same ankle/foot swelling issues and they don't have any elastic either.
We've heard that diabetic socks work well, I think they are pretty much the same thing. Thanks for the tip 😊
@@PARALIFE they are not the same thing...they are very restrictive at the top and will leave a mark. Diabetic stockings are more for deep vein thrombosis.
@@morgancalvi6675 oh right, are they like the ones you get in hospital? always thought they were the same because they come up when you search for soft top socks on amazon...
@@PARALIFE yes, I believe so...but they are more restrictive and super tight. Not at all stretchy and relax fit. I just don't want to see anyone get a bed sore.
