It is important to put the axle under load to make it easier to put the links on. I tried it with and without the load, and the links fit much easier with the axle holding the weight of the car in a normal position. I also used a bottle jack to slightly raise or lower the axle to make the links fit even better. More videos should mention this technique since it is not always obvious to the viewer where the jack / stands are located, frame or axle or both.
