  • Huge week for federal employees, most of which got a deferred retirement offer. But can you trust the offer? Should you take the offer? Interesting times for FERS employees and I would recommend checking your retirement readiness!

7 months? Traditionally, the government offers a two year buyout, not seven months. And there is a good reason for this. Most won't waste their time on seven months, and i don't blame them. If you want real movement, offer the traditional 2 year buyout. Federal pensions are small, FERS pensions are anyway. At least they could make it worth the cut by offering two years.

If you have MRA+30, my understanding is that you are eligible to get immediate benefits (pension plus FEHB). If you have MRA+20, you will need to consider how you will cover your health insurance until age 60 when your health benefits will kick in. I'm at MRA+20, so I'm hoping for a VERA/VSIP offer this year, so I will be able to get all my benefits right away rather then wait until 60.
