  • Learn how to install ARB skid plates on your GX470, GX460, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser in this step by step tutorial at Metal Tech 4x4. ARB skid plates are a durable, lightweight and affordable option for protecting the underside of your 4x4 vehicles while out on the trail. This is why ARB skid plates are some of the best out there in our opinion. Although we used ARB skid plates for this tutorial, the same process should be applicable for other brands of skid plates as well. We installed these ARB skid plates on a GX470 that was recently in the shop but the process remains the same for 4Runners and FJ Cruisers. This specific vehicle had previously received a full Metal Tech 4x4 build out including front and rear bumpers and sliders. This video should cover everything you need to know for installing ARB skid plates on your GX470/4Runner/FJC.

    Just got these for my 5th Gen 4Runner. I’m astounded they are so affordable and contrary to how they look on the internet, I confirmed with a magnet. They are steel. And the ARB instructions are absolutely crap. Thanks for making this video.

    Fun fact: Japanese vehicles don't use 13mm bolt heads. They'll use either 12mm or 14mm heads on M8 bolts. It's because the number 13 is unlucky.

    Very well done video. I installed these on my FJ Cruiser about a year ago. I fall into that 95% of people that aren't going to rock crawl so these skids were what I was looking for after pretty well bending up the OEM ones in the Oregon Dunes. One thing I haven't had to do yet is an oil change. I'm assuming that on the GX you'd just need to remove about 7 bolts and then drop the front plate.

    this is a great video it needs more views, I have the same ARB skids and I know the instructions are a little vague.

    I have the same skids ready to go on my 2012 FJ. I do need to remove my diff drop first. I would not recommend lock tite I always prefer anti-seize compound. Gives better torque spec and comes off years later without gawling the threads.Thanks for the video. Great views too. I will be on my back doing this.

      Could you space it out?

    I don't like the way that transfer case plate mounts.

    • @MrTumlook
      @MrTumlook Год назад

      Me neither, I will leave the stock one if I finally buy this kit. Looks like a hit on that plate could crack the transfer case. The thin original one would probably bend before damaging the case, and also has dedicated mounting bolts.

    I had a diff drop on my 4Runner. Installed the summit bumper and the front stone guard would not install with the radiator supports being lower. I had to order the arb radiator support (driver side) and remove the diff drop kit for the summit bumper stone guard to fit and resulting fitment of this skid kit.

    They could of just welded the nuts to the plates instead of making you install cage nuts seems kinda chinsy

    Hi does the skid plate covers up the catalytic converter , make it a deterrent for cat theft?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  2 года назад +2

      unfortunately the cat is still pretty exposed... probably not the best deterrent

    Should I be nervous that the transfer case skid doesn’t come with 4 bolts 0.25” longer than the OEM bolts that hold the transfer case together?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  Год назад +2

      Jacob, that is a valid question. However there are plenty of threads holding it together. If anything it's proven to not be an issue with the thousands of these skid kits ARB has sold world wide for the Prados.

    What year is that GX? I have an '04 and my exhausted looks likes it's a little different. The pipe crosses under the transmission pan and looks like it would interfere with that transmission skid.

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  2 года назад

      This is a 2007 GX470. We have seen slight variances in exhaust over the years. The kit from ARB does fit all the different yrs for the 470.

    •  2 года назад

      On the 03-04, the pipe crosses too low for the transmission skid to clear. You can see this in the video by Lexus Off-Road Adventures. I was advised to add a flat bar between the angle bracket and the skid for extra clearance, but I haven't done this yet. Have you found a good solution?

    Can you measure and describe the dimensions of the metal sleeves used in installation? I bought my skids from metaltech and the hardware kit you sent didn't include them.

      Not sure of the spacers you're looking for, happy to help in any way we can. Please shoot us an email at info@metaltech4x4.com and our support team will be happy to assist you further with this question. The hardware is packed by ARB in their kits, not by Metal Tech. We stock them and ship them out as packaged by ARB. We can also always get ARB on the line to help too.

    How is the oil pan accessed for an oil change?
    Does the whole system need to come off??

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  2 года назад +2

      No the whole system does not need to come off for an oil change. You can pull the front plate for access.

    Help do the fj cruiser skids require the spacer upfront?

    • @Metaltech4x4
      @Metaltech4x4  2 года назад

      We did this install on a GX470 and didn't need to use spacers. You probably won't need to use any unless you are running into an issue with clearance.
