    Just done this for the second time, you DO NOT need to remove the handle if you have these tools, you simply need to undo the handle (Torx T30) to allow the necessary movement required.
    A think pozi screwdriver through the hole where you removed the 10mm nut to release tension on the hinge bracket then use a mini socket set (I have one of these Teng T1420 1/4-inch Bits Socket Set Drive) to remove and then replace the screw.
    Best to cover said hinge in waterproof grease protect it and ensure the hinge pin stays in place when fitting.

    Greetings friends and thanks for a great video! Completed project today on my US 2015 500 Sport 70k miles. Door card attached in 5 places, 3 hex, 2 phillips. Popped off the door card and supported it on a box, no removal of cable or wiring needed. Adequate room. Vapor barrier pulled away gently by hand, folded, no cutting needed. 10mm nut removed with small socket, found broken hinge held in place by small original(?) torx screw. Couldn't get the correct angle through the little hole, so had to remove the T25 on the door to wiggle the handle enough outward to allow room to remove the little torx with a small socket/torx bit. Fiddly, as you say. Did not have to disconnect any internal actuators from door handles. Go slow and easy. Greased the new hinge and screwed into place with original little torx, folded the hinge, then back through the little hole. Fastened the 10mm, the T25 on the door. Tried the external handle, worked. Vapor barrier back in place, snapped door card back on, 5 connections fastened, closed door. Checked. . .Success!! Did it by myself, recommend a helper. Sense of accomplishment! Dealer in the SE US quoted me $415. Watched lots of videos, got done in 2 hrs. First time, scary, but did it! Thank you very much!!!

    Thanks so much for a very instructive and intelligent video for the hinge repair. Liked that you mentioned that you don't have to disconnect everything and just place the door card on its side next to the door. Very smart. I saw that someone mentioned that you had not mentioned removing the screw on the inside of the door by the door handle but I'm sure people will figure that out. Again thank you. Have ordered the part and am confident that I will be able to tackle the job.

    Okay I just did this job on my daughters car. Drivers door. You do NOT have to fully remove the handle to replace the hinge. Also just to be absolutely clear disconnect the BOTTOM of the two cables NOT the top. That will allow you to pull the handle out enough to get in at the screw at the hinge end.

    cheers mate and other commenters - door card hardest part to remove - used couple of plastic bike tyre levers and as others have mentioned was able to remove inner handle part phillips screw from hole on inside of door without having to remove handle completely. - but just loosen phillips and remove by hand from outside, otherwise it might drop down inside door.

    Great guide, but as mentioned in an earlier comment, and at least in my experience, there is no need to remove the handle, or the T27 torx screw and the rod. There should be enough room to put the new part on without doing any of that. From 5mins 50secs into the video:
    1/ Remove the broken part of the hinged piece left in the handle. You can get to the screw by using a Phillips screwdriver through the slotted hole in the door (doesn’t matter if you lose the screw, there’s a new one with the hinged kit).
    2/ Pull the handle away from the door as much as possible and offer the new hinged part into it. There should be enough clearance to open out the hinged part to allow the new screw to be put in (using the Phillips screwdriver through the slotted hole again, but use a piece of cardboard or something to protect the door from the new part).
    3/ Once the screw is in place, fold the hinge back down in place. Release the handle to allow the thread to engage through the slotted hole and then put the original nut back on.
    4/ Check it works, then reassemble the door panel. Job done!

      Good tip about screwing the new hinge via the hole in the door, on my first door I removed the bottom of the rod by “popping off” advice which caused the white retaining washer to come off, once I took a couple of pics I realised how the rod is best removed (if required) by rotating the black clip off the rod and pulling the end out without the clip and washer releasing from the bracket. I will follow your suggestion on the other door and just undo the nut inside the door and see if there’s the wiggle room if not I’ll just loosen the torx27 screw then reassemble using your tip this will save a lot of aggro and time.

  • @Love500
    @Love500 4 года назад +10

    You don’t need to take the handle off to change the hinge. You can access the screw through the hole in the door where you took the 10mm nut off. You also didn’t show or mention the third bolt in the door card behind the round chrome handle trim.

    • @bsimpson6204
      @bsimpson6204 3 года назад +2

      Tried this and failed - T change the hinge I unscrewed the door handle, pulled it backward 20mm or so then wiggled the handle away from the door skin. It's very tight in the hole. I then had enough room to get a stubby philips screwdriver onto the hinge screw and remove the old hinge.

    • @Love500
      @Love500 3 года назад

      B Simpson you risk breaking the handle or damaging the rod bushes like that. Sounds like you got away with it though.

    • @davidmcmillan979
      @davidmcmillan979 3 года назад +2

      This simpler way suggested by Love 500 worked for me. Used a realtively thin philips screwdriver to get in at the angle required and a small length of heatshrink wrap to hold the screw in place on the driver to get the thread started (more reliable than magnetic end although I'm sure that will work too). Protected the paintwork as the hinge will scrape it otherwise when opened to get the screw in. Thanks for posting this, it made it very easy to anticipate the process.

    I would like to clarify when you describe removing the bottom of the rod you “just push out”. If this is done the plastic retaining washer pops off and reinserting is impossible until you remove the black plastic clip. The black clip spring-clips to the rod, push off the rod by rotating the black clip this then allows the end of the rod to come out without releasing the white retaining washer. To put the rod back push the end into the hole in the black clip then rotate the black clip so it clips back onto the rod. If you have pulled the rod and the washer has popped off you will have to take black clip off the rod as described previously pop it through the bracket hole and clip the washer to the back side (lock side) of the bracket then pop end of rod and rotate the black clip onto the rod. I also did not cut the plastic inner covering but peeled it back back by pulling a small edge then using a blade carefully cut the adhesive leaving equal amount on door and cover then folding it back, even carefully released from yellow round plastic insert. Refitting was easy, the cover sealed perfectly and manage to get edge of yellow plug to cover the edge of the covering’s hole. Now looks like original and no cut edges to allow any ingress of water from a wet glass to inner door card, honestly just a little more patience is well worth a neat and secure finish.

      Thanks for this-however a bit late for me. I tried varies time to just "push out" as indicated here and other vids and when it finally let go, a little translucent whitish plastic clip (not red one as others have inquired) broke and fell to the bottom of the inside! I can’t figure what where it goes and what is for (even after finding diagrams online) but the door opened perfectly without it-until it didn’t -a couple days later. Any thoughts would be helpful.

    • @simonfletcher5858
      @simonfletcher5858 2 года назад

      Not really. It is glued in place and when you try and pull it back, it tears easily and makes a mess. Cutting with a sharp blade produces a much neater finish that can be taped back together.

  • @fabsolutions2087
    @fabsolutions2087 3 года назад +3

    READ THIS COMMENT - THIS VIDEO IS BOTH INCORRECT AND HIGHLY MISLEADING
    At 6:35 he will show you the image of the handle from behind where he says 'remove this rod as it simply presses out'. He shows the rod disconnected from the bottom. Under no circumstances should you remove it from the bottom. He will then jiggle the handle out. Then at 7:28 he will proudly show you he has removed it. However, at 7:28 you will notice the rod is now no longer attached at the top. Yes, you should remove it from the top and NOT THE BOTTOM. So you cannot remove the handle with the top of the rod connected.
    1) REMOVING THE ROD FROM THE TOP IS NOT AN INSIGNIFICANT TASK.
    2) REMOVING THE ROD FROM THE BOTTOM IS A DISASTER, BECAUSE RECONNECTING IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.
    VERY VERY MISLEADING VIDEO FROM A CONTRIBUTOR THAT SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

    • @laurenm8378
      @laurenm8378 3 года назад +3

      I've found the opposite true; the bottom bit of the rod (not the top) is designed to come out - you turn the black clip clockwise to disconnect the bottom of the rod, which allows you to free the door handle enough to then screw in the new hinge. I've done both my driver door and my passenger door, and when I did the driver door, once the top rod was forced out, it was impossible to get it to stay back in resulting in the driver door being unable to be open from the outside as the rod would just keep falling out. Passenger door I only removed the bottom of the rod and had 0 problems.
