    actually in Finland, we have also Swedish texts everywhere because Swedish is the official language of Finland,with Finnish of course. So the "mjölkchoklad med......" is Swedish and it has a different pronouncing (:

I'm not sure if it is only for Fazer blue chocolate or the other ones too but I thought it might be an interesting fact. Hi, actually, best way to describe salmiac or salmiakki in finnish is that it is salty liqourice but actually salmiac is white powder, a chemical named ammonium chloride= ammmonia and chloride combined, together they get neutral ph and is completely safe to eat. It is salty tasting and usually it is combined either black colouring and arabgum or they sometimes use medical charcoal to get the black color.

  • @GlendaMoore
    @GlendaMoore 12 лет назад

    According to Wikipedia, salmiak is "salty licorice." It gets the salty flavor from ammonium chloride, which they say is an acquired taste.

  • @johnofbristol
    @johnofbristol 11 лет назад

    Whenever I go to Finland I stock up with a kilo or so of salmiakki. Fazer is the best: it contains 7% ammonium chloride, the maximum allowed in Finland, although you can get 13% "double salt" salmiakki in Holland. It is made by Venco. Jukka Annala wrote a very interesting book on salmiakki, published by Nemo in 2001. It is written in very difficult colloquial Finnish, and it took me 20 months to read.

    A nice review, often while travelling those are the things I miss the most. As you mentioned so many of the chocolates are too sweet and even sweeter filling. Salty liquorice is obtainable from many places not only Finland. Ate one jar of salty liquorice in Langkawi, Malaysia and removed home sick fast. The filling in chocolate has quite strong taste, so nice that you enjoyed it.

    I don´t know if someone has already posted this type of comment but: Salmiakki, as we call it in Finland, would be salty-liquorice. And the chocolate in both is milk chocolate, dark chocolate here in finland rarely has milk so much or at all in it :)

  • @MrAddar7
    @MrAddar7 11 лет назад

    Salmiak is candy with ammoniumchloride. The ammoniumcloride gives the sharp taste, and is an aquired taste.

    Fazer chocolate is one of the best chocolates in the world. This is because it is not too sugary. Finns like a mild sweet flavor and this is shown in their chocolate. If you get your hands on a bar of Fazer Blue, EAT IT! I prefer it to all the other Fazer mixes, though all of them are good. The other really good Fazer flavor is the red Talous Suklaa baking chocolate. It is a sweet dark chocolate that is good just to eat. As an American, let me say Fazer chocolate puts Hershey's chocolate to shame. And yes, I got a great laugh at your Finnish, though "Puhun vähän."

      It just melts on your tongue far more better than anything else... It's almost the best of Fazer's, I think. The flavoured chocolates are ok, too, but the blue one... ♥.♥
      I personally thought the videoguy was going to puke or something when he tasted salmiakki... :D It's very rare that other than Finns like it. I have any idea why, salmiakki is like the greatest invention in the candy area. o.O
      And if I'm right, you read some swedish there too... In Finland the texts are always on Finnish and Swedish. ^^ Like, I mean... "toffeetäytteinen maitosuklaavohveli" is finnish and "mjölkchokladvåffla med toffeefyllning" is swedish.

    The reason the word ammonium chloride may sound a bit icky is not just because of the chemical name itself, but because it is partially made from ammonia, which is a gas that's produced from manure/fertilizer and has a pretty strong smell to it. Anyone who's worked in a horse stable knows what I'm talking about :-)

    You can make yourself a bottle of salmiakkikossu if you put turkish peppers in bottle of vodka and let it sit for a week or so, as long as they are dissolved in vodka and color it black. It is delicious, for 0,7l or 0,5 litre bottle you can put a whole bag of those candies. If you can get your hand on candy named tyrkisk peber, it is finnish candy, but it's name is written in finlands other native language, swedish as on coastside of finland there are lots of finlands-swedish people and I am not sure, but I think just by the name of Karl Fazer that he was swedish talking and tyrkisk peber is made by fazer company. It's name means Turkish Pepper and it is called in finland turkin pippuri(also turkish pepper in english)

    Nevermind the pronunciantion. All Finnish products have texts in Finnish and Swedish, and often also in English. Chocolade here is not so sweet or too sweet, thats why there's many different tastes like strawberry, blueberry and salmijakki. Salmijakki causes high blood pressure so be careful if some Finn offers you salmijakki and you have high blood pressure.

  • @ghanwin

    Hey David! Glad you liked the chocolate! I should've written a little intro to them but I completely forgot. The second chocolate wtih salmiakki is a more bitter version on liquorice a very common finnish treat! I think the reason why our milk chocolate a more subtle taste compared to the Australian ones is because Karl Fazer actually uses fresh milk to produce them while a lot of companies use powdered milk :) I have a few other ones in mind that I'd like to send you, if fyou're up for it :P

    Sorry that came little bit confusing at the end, they use either artificial colouring or charcoal to make the color and arab gum to get the right feel to it. It is sweetened with sugar and it is quite delicious, but even to my finnish taste milkchocolate and salmiac is strange combination. with icecream, salmiac is delicious, they even make salmiac icecream here in Finland, but strangest thing they do is salmiakki marinated pork.

    Not everyone in Finland like salmiakki. And some people outside Finland like it.
    Fazer is not like how `maker´ is pronounced and just switching m to f, and k to z. It´s more like the `fa´ of farm, then z is quite like in English(but it´s a combination of t and s), e is pronounced like the e in press, and r is maybe more difficult to people not from Finland. All people try to pronounce Fazer with this info. Hope it helps :)

    haha, when you showed the salmiakki one i was like oh boy here we go.
    every foreign friend i know always spitted salmiakki out when they taste it.
    Too bad the one who sent you the chocolate didn't send you the original blue karl fazer bar without any of those strawberry mixes

    Could you do, or have you done, a video with Aussie chocolate? I would love to see if they're similar to English choccies!

    This was so much fun to watch, thank you! :D I never thought watching someone eat what you are most used to could be this entertaining...
    I recently sent a bar of plain Fazer chocolate and a bag of salmiakki gummies for my British friend, apparently her dad loved salmiakki so much that I'll have to send more. xD
