      There's a couple spots where the chord symbols are wrong, but the notes seem to be right on from I can tell. For example: second chord in bar 83 has a G#, making it dominant not minor. But while the chord may not be minor the error is.

      I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. He’s clearly just masterfully talented as a musician, but I wish he’d learn the “remove a string of pearls” mantra from Coco Chanel. Too many good ideas all at once ends up becoming muddy. I really didn’t like his cover of Moon River, for example, because it just tried to be everything all at once. Not every phrase requires a run or a trill or some ornament on it. Save those and use them strategically to build to something so the song has a dynamic range not just in volume or in key, but also in density.

    The issue for me, is that there is no theme, don’t get me wrong it’s amazing what he’s doing, but I think that’s where jazz fails in my opinion, it’s nice to be unrestricted and to flow where music takes you, but I’ll never remember the soul of this piece of music because it is generally just chords that sound nice next to each other. It is unbelievably harder to create something unforgettable. No hate just opinion.

      Some people play video games to move through a sequence of events in a mostly linear fashion. A stable, curated experience.
      Some others play video games like Skyrim, GTA, and Minecraft to explore, be spontaneous, and feel freedom within an expansive sandbox.
      Both approaches to game design are right for the people that love them. Music can function similarly.

    • @firosuke
      @firosuke Год назад

      I think your point is valid, but the point of improvisation is not to craft an unforgettable melody. We have Beethoven for that 😆
      Maybe the whole point here is the opposite: to show that beautiful things don't have to be planned, but can be found in spontaneity, like going for a stroll and discovering something new. In a sense, it's a thing of the moment. But recording gives us the illusion of permanence, which is more in line with how classical music has come to be perceived, and I think "permanence" is not the spirit of this music. Of course, the recording and transcription allow us to relive the experience.
      I think a lot of inspiration for careful arrangements also comes from freedom and spontaneity, and this kind of improvisation is tapping freely into that inspiration without the interruption of having to stop and pin it down -- a bit like letting a swarm of butterflies pass, rather than trying to capture them all and stick them on your wall 🙂

      That's what I don't get it. To me, it sounds awful and I don't undersatand how people say that this is good.

      @@CalebePriester I've got to say that I disagree with you here. I've been an amateur musician for about 20 years, but have never been very well versed in the western baroque music theory (I've never, for example, bothered to learn how to read sheet music). However, to me this piece sounds wonderfully soulful, playful, and full of feeling. I can't explain why exactly.
      I get that this in many ways is an orgy of technical ability, but, for me, the piece exudes a joy for music and improvisation. I've played many of the western (well, german/austrian) classical composers, and I love some of those works as well, but those compositions work for me in a different way. They provoke a strong emotion, albeit often in a predictable way, which is amazing in its own right.
      But this, and much of what Jacob Collier does, gives me feeling. It gives me the musical equivalent of the feeling of falling in love as a teenager. And I absolutely adore it.

    • @firosuke
      @firosuke Год назад +1

      I doubt there was only a couple of "ideas" he was thinking, but rather a long sequence of ideas that he explored one-by-one and organically as he discovered them, without much planning. I think that's how long open-ended improvisations often work, unlike the solos you often hear in group performances where everybody has limited time to make their solo count, so they unconsciously build a solo around some kind of structure.
      Here, you'd have to identify and dissect each short passage's vocabulary. I think it's do-able but a lot of work, because there is no overall logic to summarise. You could imagine it's like the chapters of a book where each chapter is about a different character, and their story somehow leads on to the next, but they are otherwise independent.

    It's weird that you can tell a story with images by just a piano. To me, it starts with a gracious, peaceful feeling, like a lovely sweet memories of a small boy on a simple town. The songs his parents play in the background "pa pa ra pam.. pam pam pa ra pam pam..."", it's a song they play every year around holiday season, that makes the boy feel warm all the time even though the snow outside is getting quite cold already. To him, these time is the most joyous combination of great feelings for him, he loves the hot cocoa that happens quite frequently, the food, the frequent appearance of his parents, even though they're still quite busy with what to do for the time, the boy is even happy that he sees his parents working together on something. That's not even half of the reason yet, He's also kinda happy that he doesn't have to see 95% of the school (which he doesn't really like), and pretty eager for the holiday travel that the family is gonna have together, the presents... All of it... And then he grows. The boy leave town to the big city with a throbbing, excited heart. His childhood is his wonderful foundation, his goodness through all the evil and hardship of life, but the boy has loooong been craving to jump on and amazing adventure, where he (probably an artist) is gonna learn about how to live alone, how the city life is, how to let his passion lead his life to the highest note to the lowest feeling, to be freeeeeee. And then he gets a grab of it, of that life, he's in control, he's doing what he loves, what he wants.... Or is he? Oh gosh not 100%, there's also his ego, and his greed, and his anxiety sometimes or most of the time that makes him realizes he's also not being in control and getting huddled and push around and "hurried up" and trying to finish these to achieve this goal. That's not good. That's wild. That's not totally free isn't it? He needs a stronger foundation of his life... Maybe a family? Well let's not be so hasty ! - So he starts with seeing a great girl. An interesting girl. A girl that he kinda think he's lucky to be with, that's a lil bit over his league (just a lilll bit). But they're great together, she has a way to get him out of his comfort zone without stepping over it, and strangely, the warm feeling this girl give him somehow, sometimes when it's just 2 of them together, reminds him of his happy childhood time. So fuck it. They get married. They have a child that's jumping around and break things and also kinda try hard to have his parents's attention all the time. But it's all that lil boy from a simple town ever wanted. Or rather, the way it makes him happy and peaceful. He'd love that they grow old together through another 55 seasons, over and over again, creating memories and enjoy these joyous simple moments like the greatest sitcom anyone ever created. And they he'll close his eyes at the end and ascending into the white light. Or was it a flash that makes us realizes half of the story was the happiest imagination of that 30 years old guy at 3:00 mins of the song, but it doesn't matter, cuz that's how he's gonna live his life. Happily ever after ...

    MIDI comms, real audio.
    MIDI is used to trigger the hundreds of samples taken of a piano, instead of being synthesised like on cheap keyboards. It's not perfect, but it makes world-class instruments placed in historic spaces accessible to everyone.
